to say women don't have XY chromosomes?

1000 replies

taylorswift1989 · 03/08/2024 11:55

Seeing a lot of posts on social media with people admitting they were "wrong" to call Imane Khelif a man, and that they now understand "she's a woman with XY chromosomes."

Am I going insane? A person with XY chromosomes is male! (Regardless of how they identify, of course.) Why are people saying stuff that is obviously nonsensical? Are people really that ignorant of basic biological facts?

This is objectively true

Actually there’s nothing “objective” or “true” about it. It’s a matter of perspective. For example, as evidence this is true , someone mentioned how 57(?) men (something like this) in the swimming heats beat the female world record For 100m swimming . Theres about maybe 1 billion men in the world in the relevant age category. So being equivalent to the 58th man would make that woman faster at swimming 100 metres then 9.999999% of men. (A very silly rough sum but you get the point).

As for women’s football, tbf football hasn’t historically been a female sport so the opportunities for women aren’t there.

Yes, the top female athletes will be beaten by the top male athletes, but Comparing the sporting performance of top female athletes to “mediocre” and “shit” men is degrading, and it does make me feel despondent about women’s sports that people look at women this way.

Laurel Hubbard was a mediocre male. Nothing more.

The men competing in women’s sports don’t reach the qualifying standards in men’s sport.

The mindset of men who want to punch women as a sport and be lauded for it is utterly gross. Do you disagree?

The mindset of anyone who thinks punching people is a sport is utterly gross, IMO. If you think punching people for sport is fine, then that's OK. Now you just are deciding that you can, from a distance, define who is and isn't female.

The top female athletes will be beaten by very mediocre male athletes.

John McEnroe got a lot of flak a few years ago for saying that Serena Williams would rank about 700 in the world if placed alongside men, but he probably wasn't too far off.

The Swedish national women's football team was beaten by a schoolboy side.

Anyone who has been through male puberty has a massive advantage over females in all sports.

@Bambooshoot

I don't know if that's what is going on here though. Your interpretation is dripping in presumptions. I prefer more credibility.

Even Two major world sporting bodies seem to have come to different conclusions, so what I will acknowledge is that this is difficult.

Tbh I'm really leaning against what you say because of the lack of nuance and hate filled language.

ArabellaScott · 03/08/2024 19:12

It's not hate to call a male a male.

It's simple fact.

And a male punching a woman repeatedly in the face is not sport, it's abuse.

Funny! XX would mean no chance whatsoever of developing a penis. No “medical condition” could cause a penis other than XY. You might as well ask what if someone was born XX and developed into a swan - sure, there’s a ballet, but it’s just a fantasy!

FOJN · 03/08/2024 19:13

Some of those those were sought out by dodgy coaches with an eye on a quick buck that scoured parts of southern Africa for men with DSDs and told them they would make them rich. Some of them will always have had sporting dreams but others wouldn't have considered it as a career until it was suggested to them.

@Runningupthecurtains

Like who though?

I thought Caster Semenya is on record as saying he was recruited this way.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/08/2024 19:15

It's not hate to call a male a male.

If you are fettering to an individual with a DSD it appears the jury ( other than you ) is out on that one.

@ArabellaScott

So better at tennis then than 9.9999% of men.

The greatest female tennis player of all time is better than less than 10% of men?

I should hope so.

Runningupthecurtains · 03/08/2024 19:18

sussexman · 03/08/2024 19:06

So no actual examples then, as was asked for?

No because the whole thing is always shrouded in mystery and deflected and denied, strangely enough the 3 men who stood on the podium for the women's 800m final in Rio haven't given in depth interviews detailing exactly when the prospect of competing at the highest level first came to them and if this before or after their diagnosis as they don't publicly admit to a diagnosis.

I don't necessarily know which rowers dreamt of Olympics glory from childhood and with were introduced to the idea from talent identification programmes but if those talent identification programmes were deliberately looking for people with DSDs I would regard them as unscrupulous.

But whether it was before or after their diagnosis at some point they became aware and if they had become aware of a whole host of diagnosise they would have had to walk away from their sport dreams so way should a DSD be different to other diagnosis l.

CaveMum · 03/08/2024 19:19

I posted the swimming times, yes I was comparing elite with elite. If that’s not “good enough” then let’s compare amateur men with elite females.

Take this year’s London Marathon:

The elite female race was won in a World Record time of 2:16:16.

3 men in the Mass (ie deemed not good enough for the men’s elite race) Men’s category ran a faster time than this.

Just for reference, when it comes to the Mass Women’s category, run in 2:33:53, 327 men in the Mass Men’s category ran a faster time.

laurel hubbard is a trans woman.

I’m not an expert in this area but I believe that Trans people have been able to compete in the Olympics since 2004, and no trans woman has won a medal? They are not dominating female sports.

Obviously but the man ranked 699 isn't getting anywhere near men's Wimbledon or the US Open is he?

Unless useful idiots create a loophole whereby he can 'become' a woman then suddenly he's in the running to walk away with the women's title without much effort.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/08/2024 19:21

So you just egged that story about " scouring Southern Africa ".

And also rowers 🙄

It’s not difficult - they were DNA tested and shown as men previously. The Olympic committee just asked what they had in their passports ( which we know can be changed anyway) and whether they were pregnant (clearly not, since they’re men). Not sure why you’re so keen to argue against such a clear injustice against women, I can only guess you have a vested interest, maybe you should come clean and declare it?

SweetcornFritter · 03/08/2024 19:22

Tandora · 03/08/2024 19:01

Nah it was a pp discussing the Olympic swimming heats. Rtft.

Edited

That’s possibly the argument being put forward, however I am making the case that there very many more than just 57 male competitive swimmers would be able to beat women’s swimming world records for the simple fact that most of them are far stronger swimmers than most women. I don’t even know why this is up for debate.

sunglassesonthetable · 03/08/2024 19:24

My point stands . Two world governing bodies disagree which makes me acknowledge this is a complex issue.
