AIBU to ignore this? Caught having sex.

I’m mortified as I think my 14 year old son heard or even saw my husband and I having sex last night.

I’m not 100% sure though.

We had our windows open and I hadn’t realised our bedroom door had swung open in the breeze (we both thought door was firmly closed, bedroom is an L shape and you can’t see the door from the bed, we can’t add a lock as it’s a rental).

We were in the middle of it and heard the bathroom door close. It was after midnight so we thought our son would be fast asleep.

This morning my son seems grumpier than usual, although to be fair he is quite grumpy these days. Typical moody teen.

I don’t feel I can raise it, as I’m not positive he definitely heard/saw anything. Therefore AIBU to just ignore it if he doesn’t mention anything?

If he does mention it obviously I’ll apologise but I’m just mortified and worried we’ve scarred him for life.

Has this happened to anyone else? How did you handle it? Argggghhhhhh

This thread is weird. He’s 14 not 8! Our 14 year old caught us once and gave me the silent treatment. I laughed it off. I WANT them to know that sex isn’t shameful, and that healthy happy marriages include a decent sex life. I’d rather they didn’t walk in on it, but it’s not the end of the world.
If he kept the grump up I think I’d actually ask if he was grumpy because he’d seen us at it, then you get to have the conversation about it being healthy etc

Tessabelle74 · 05/08/2024 20:15

I heard my mum and dad having a slap and tickle session at about that age, grossed me out for sure but I'm definitely not scarred by it 🤣

I had forgotten this.
I lived in a close.

One summer night about 10ish ,2 doors down was going at it with lots of vocals... very very loud. All our windows were open.
Suddenly the men of the close starting shouting out encouragement.
Get in there my son.
8.5 out of 10.
Put him down girl , you don't know where he has been...
There was a lot of clapping...
Next day she came out and looked very red in the face, one of the women offered to pay to borrow him...
We all laughed at it, and it was never mentioned again.

That’s hilarious. How old were you?

LBFseBrom · 07/08/2024 00:47

That was funny.

Mine came into our room when he was very little and we were just at the end of it, quietly I thought. He climbed on our bed. I told him we'd been doing bouncing exercises, couldn't think of anything else to say off the top of my head. He was content with that, had a cuddle and went back to sleep.

🤣 OP, sorry feel free not to answer but what position were you in

69

Shakespeareandi · 07/08/2024 00:57

I'm sure the 14 year old knows it's perfectly normal to have sex.
It's also perfectly normal NOT to want to hear your parents having sex. I don't really want to hear anyone having sex. And I don't think as a PP suggested, that any 14 year old would feel "proud" knowing their parents have sex. If he brings it up, I'd apologise. Not about having sex of course, but for him having had to listen to it. Hopefully it will instill the need to be respectful and he won't subject you to having to listen to him having sex in the future. A lot of things humans do are perfectly normal but it doesn't mean other people need to hear it.

Fedupmumofadultsons · 07/08/2024 01:03

Well think of it like this even if he did see he probably ran past quickly. His parents still in love doing what grown up couples do it won't scar him don't worry slightly embarrassed maybe but scarred no

Did you have trouble with him wanting bouncy time every time you tried to put him to bed after that?! Bouncing exercises would have appealed enormously to our dc as a bedtime activity!

Our children were 13 and 11, it was a hot afternoon, they were playing in the garden. So we decided to have a 'quickie' in our bedroom. We were having an enjoyable time, when suddenly we were aware that we were observed. My son had crept in and had settled down to watch the action. I said go away we will be downstairs in while. My son said no I'm staying, it's part of my biology homework. Our ardour quickly evaporated. I don't think it did any permanent damage.😁

Erm, that is a bit strange I have to say 😊

Calliopespa · 07/08/2024 01:12

This has reminded me of a friend was was walked in on by her little boy, who shouted crossly:” Daddy! Stop killing Mummy!”

yesmen · 07/08/2024 01:19

He wouldn’t be walking around at midnight were it not for your activity that night!

Yourdemonsyourproblem · 07/08/2024 03:41

I remember I saw my parents having sex, I can still see it over 20years later yuk

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 08/08/2024 09:10

Mortifiedhere · 03/08/2024 12:12

Just to clarify, I heard him close the bathroom door, not our door. I’m hoping he didn’t even approach our door, which is a little way away from the bathroom he was using.

Well he probably just went back to bed then but could hear the sex going on and that’s why he’s moody but you have nothing to apologise for so please don’t say sorry.

Vinomummyinlockdown · 10/08/2024 18:18

Our kids -same age - literally think we only had sex to have them lol so they would be mortified if they saw or heard us having it NOW. Just saying.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 10/08/2024 18:21

Adult son recently told us he heard us having sex when he was a teenager. We never knew at the time. But guess what? It hasn't scarred him for life!!!

OrangeSquareBlob · 10/08/2024 18:25

It's fine. He's just mildly traumatised or thinks you are inconsiderate. Don't worry about it.

I heard my parents when I was about 8. To be fair I thought it sounded like one of them had cramp. I knocked on the bedroom door and asked if my mum was alright. She said yes I'm fine darling. Only many years later did I realise.

MissingMoominMamma · 10/08/2024 18:50

NerrSnerr · 03/08/2024 11:36

It's very basic stuff that parents should make sure that their kids don't see them having sex. It's pretty careless that you'd let the door blow open.

My parents had no regard for us kids- rocking caravans, would be at it loudly when they knew we were awake etc. Not saying the OP is like this but I wouldn't just shrug off that he may have seen them. That isn't nice at for anyone.

You’ve never been in the moment? It blew open, they didn’t leave it open!

basilic · 10/08/2024 19:01

Firstly, some 14 year old boys are having sex and he probably felt as embarrassed as you would if you had seen him. I certainly wouldn’t mention it or apologise but I’d get a lock or wedge on the door. Boundaries are important at that age. He’s probably not traumatised but feeling ikky about it for sure. I still remember hearing my parents have sex and it’s a very uncomfortable feeling. Closing doors means respecting each others boundaries.

BigPussyEnergy · 10/08/2024 19:19

Mortifiedhere · 03/08/2024 11:22

Yes it would be an apology if he heard anything he shouldn’t have! I’m sincerely hoping he didn’t walk into our room and see something too.

If he walked into your room without knocking then it’s on him. I bet he won’t do it again!

RetirementIsGreat · 10/08/2024 19:29

When I was around the same age, I walked in my parents having sex. It was just yuk, but didn't scare me for life and I'm 67.

FloozyMcGee · 10/08/2024 19:53

I'm pretty sure this happens to a good many teens, and usually it teaches them to give their parents privacy. Sex is good, beautiful, how can it scar him for life? Was your husband choking you? Cussing at you? As long is it wasn't kinky I think your son just learned a little about how adults share love. Sex is nothing to be ashamed of.

letsjustdothis · 10/08/2024 19:56

He probably hears you all the time. Unless your internal walls are soundproofed and/or he is at least a floor above/below.

Please leave OP's internal walls out of this 😂
