I’m mortified as I think my 14 year old son heard or even saw my husband and I having sex last night.

I’m not 100% sure though.

We had our windows open and I hadn’t realised our bedroom door had swung open in the breeze (we both thought door was firmly closed, bedroom is an L shape and you can’t see the door from the bed, we can’t add a lock as it’s a rental).

We were in the middle of it and heard the bathroom door close. It was after midnight so we thought our son would be fast asleep.

This morning my son seems grumpier than usual, although to be fair he is quite grumpy these days. Typical moody teen.

I don’t feel I can raise it, as I’m not positive he definitely heard/saw anything. Therefore AIBU to just ignore it if he doesn’t mention anything?

If he does mention it obviously I’ll apologise but I’m just mortified and worried we’ve scarred him for life.

Has this happened to anyone else? How did you handle it? Argggghhhhhh

Don't even mention. It. That would be a big mistake. I mean why would you.

It would be a great shock to a child of 14 to know that his parents have sex. He surely won’t have had any form of sex education at such a young age. He will have thought that his mum was being assaulted.

The poor child will be affected by this for the rest of his lifetime.

Is this sarcasm? @Riapia if you’re not using humour here, I’m a concerned for you. 💐

Meh......if it makes you feel any better I'm 99. 99999999 my poor, long suffering brother in law saw me doing a naked dash to the loo around 3 am a few weeks back. To top it all I was using my phone as a torch just to highlight my flabby glory just that little bit more. 😬

Mortifying as it is its only a body. And we all have one.

Ah yes, the naked dash to the bathroom using a phone torch when staying in a place with no ensuite and other people… always a gamble 😂

Don't say anything just cross your fingers he doesn't tell his mates and hope he hasn't seen Kevin and Perry Go Large and got ideas. 😂

I would imagine that 100 texts were exchanged in the first hour this morning. 😂

It’s sarcasm🙄But children are grossed out if it’s their parents. I still would be and I’m an adult.

I think it’s kind of weird when posters act like they grew up hearing their parents grunting and moaning.

Leanmeansmitingmachine · 03/08/2024 15:47

What’s with all the self-flagellation?

Hispi · 03/08/2024 15:54

I wouldn’t say anything, just ignore and get the wedge for the door.
My mother gave me the ‘when adults love each other very much’ chat when I was in the same position and I nearly died of embarrassment at that age, I would have rathered them make a quick joke and moved swiftly on!

Tregaronableist · 03/08/2024 15:55

A kid of 14 knows his parents have sex but will be totally grossed out about it. Don’t say a word.

My friend got pregnant again when her daughter was 14. The daughter’s response was to look disgusting and she said, ‘ughh that means you’ve been having sex’🤮😂.

Lacdulancelot · 03/08/2024 15:58

My dh has night terrors and one night he dreamed that I was falling so he grabbed me and was shouting and being half asleep I started screaming.
The next day I said to teen dd ‘you didn’t come to chk when I was screaming because your df was having a night terror, it could have been a murderer attacking us.’

She replied ‘well, I heard you but I didn’t know what sort of screaming it was and didn’t want to walk in on you and dad so I ignored it.’

Totally unphased. Although I did point out that those were not the screams of someone enjoying sex.

When we were about 8 we couldn’t even look the parents of a girl in our class in the eye as they had a large family - which meant, we reasoned, they had done it x number of times. At least our parents all stuck to 2 or 3 aberrative moments of debauched madness…

To be fair until the OP supplies us with more details we don't if what he heard was normal for adults in a loving relationship.

He might have heard OP's DP laboriously turning the windlass of a squeaking trebuchet filled with sriracha.

I’m too innocent ( or unimaginative) to know what that would be involved in!

TempestTost · 03/08/2024 16:02

Calliopespa · 03/08/2024 15:28

This is clearly something thing that differs across social groups. Some 14 year olds would still be several years away from intercourse.
And 14 year olds all wipe their butts. Perfectly natural and healthy. Doesn’t mean they want to see their mum do it so I’m not even sure what the reasoning is in saying they might be having sex.

The average age for first having sex in the UK is 17, so yes, I don't think 14 is typical especially.

ThatPeachSnake · 03/08/2024 16:03

Eeep! I would ask if eveything is ok and see if he says anything about it. No need to apologise just yet.

I do think that, whilst normal in a loving adult relationship, it’s never not awkward to hear others having sex, especially your parents…and especially when you are 14.

BrutusMcDogface · 03/08/2024 16:09

Why apologise for him having seen anything? In his parents’ room? In the middle of the night? 🙄

Sassybooklover · 03/08/2024 16:10

Don't say a word. Your son will be mortified if you say anything. You also don't know if he saw/heard anything either! Just leave it.

The thought of that makes me cringe myself inside out! 😂😂😂

I’d rather just plead ignorance and forget it ever happened! I certainly wouldn’t be apologising!

CurlewKate · 03/08/2024 16:37

Ignore. Ignore. Ignore. Pretend you donmr know he might have seen or heard anything.

GoodieMcTwoshoes · 03/08/2024 16:51

I don't see why a teen would be moody about it, so it's probably unrelated @Mortifiedhere . I'dve thought he'd find it funny if anything.

We all know by 14 that married couples with children just might have sex sometimes.

Boomer55 · 03/08/2024 16:53

Nah. My kids caught ex and I a couple of times. It’s part of life.🤷‍♀️

Mortifiedhere · 03/08/2024 16:59

Yes perfectly normal sex. No yelling or dungeon style equipment.

I’ve just been on a walk with him and he was chatty as usual, so I’m beginning to think he didn’t hear anything anyway. Hopefully he was half asleep going to the loo.

For those criticising me, I already felt bad and I’ve learned my lesson thanks!

Thanks everyone else for all the kind advice and the funny stories.

What a fuss. He's 14 he must know his parents have sex and if he doesn't then that is a problem.

Just make sure that your door is properly closed next time.
