Angela Carini is the incredibly brave Italian boxer who had her Olympic dream shattered in less than a minute after being punched in the face by Imane Khelif, a male competitor who was disqualified from the women’s World Championships last year because his testosterone levels were too high.
Everyone should be saying her name. Over and over and over again.

Can anyone tell me how I can watch the clip? I can't find it anywhere (just people talking about it) and it's mysteriously absent from iPlayer...

The way this is being reported by all outlets is pissing me right off. Reporters and anchors tying themselves in knots to avoid reporting the facts.

This absolute bullshit, that one may choose gender, has resulted in a biological man punching a biological female square on the face on live TV today. Then being applauded as a winner. Fucking report that.

#IStandWithAngelaCarini

That's down to the IOC. They have slapped loads of restrictions on how the sex of athletes can be referred to

SmartyFace · 01/08/2024 17:46

Sorry I haven't had time to read full thread and am in a rush, but wasn't the athlete in question born female (ie with a vagina?)
Have had a quick Google and I am a bit confused about the whole thing. Feel so sorry for Angela though, she was clearly at a disadvantage for whatever reason the other boxer failed the "gender test". So so unfair.

Institutional naivety or institutional corruption? The IOC must know that if there is a way to cheat athletes, coaches and countries will exploit it.

Anyway, the sheer level of confusion and obfuscation in the public discourse on this just shows where pronoun politeness gets you.

It's that heady mix of corruption and misogyny.

Remember these are the same people who will pore over every molecular detail of a special running shoe that might mean male athletes have a milli-second advantage over another man.

I have nothing but the deepest contempt for them.

yourhairiswinterfire · 01/08/2024 17:47

Neither of the boxers in question are, or have ever claimed to be, trans.

Exactly. Loads of people making utter fools of themselves by not bothering to understand before rushing in to breathlessly defend the poor menz from evil, 'hateful' women who refuse to celebrate the 'sport' of MVAW.

It's just easy to label posters who have concerns about this as "transphobic".

Angela's opponent was a man. A person with XY chromosomes.

Yep if you liked the famed JK Rowling quote, Twitter would remove it

We've had years when if one wasn't entirely on board with this nonsense about gender change etc then one has been slammed but this Olympic situation is the result.

No, the boxer involved has XY chromosomes and is male. Boxing's regulating body is. quite clear that it does not support his inclusion in the women's competition — it's the IOC that is behind the obfuscation. The Olympic spirit died today.

just read this lovely little bbc article where a journalist feels sorry for poor Khelif

Unbelievable.

I'm not going to renew my TV licence after this. If women everywhere all took this stand...

Qwertys · 01/08/2024 17:55

Does this person have a DSD? People are saying there’s no trans person involved but I am not understanding what’s going on then.

Powerful stuff!

heathspeedwell · 01/08/2024 17:57

Given the nature of the press restrictions on reporting, it's hardly surprising that people are confused.

Look at how many people still don't realise that Caster Semenya is a man and has known he was a man since he was 18 at the very latest.

(In fact there are loads of photos of him dressed as a boy in his childhood, so I think he knew since at least puberty that he was male. There's even a photo of him as a teen in just a pair of shorts with no top on in his autobiography. I don't think many women would publish a topless teen photo of themselves).

He has XY chromosomes. He's a he. If he's not claiming to be trans he could be:

a cheat
a chancer
a fantasist
or delusional

But whatever he is, he's not a woman.

It’s interesting though, that if you begin to type “Istand”, “IstandwithImanekhelife” is the option provided to you. No mention of Angela.

Honestly it’s insidious.

Yes, and when I type in in full istandwithangelacarini into Twitter/X, it doesn't even give that as an option!

It is not 100% known if they have a DSD. They have both failed a sex test to be classed as female. However, a minority of people are shouting that the majority are transphobic by having a problem with these athletes. However, the athletes themselves have not said they are transwomen, so it is not possible to be transphobic about a person with XY chromosomes fighting against a person with XX chromosomes. (I've deliberately used the word "person" and their chromosome status in order for no-one to be arguing about what "woman" means.

Men punching women in the face is now officially an Olympic Sport.

All because we can't possibly hurt the feelings of a tiny minority of men. They have to be prioritised. Always. It's a shit, shit day.

I also hold all the women (the ones with vaginas) who have cheered this on in equal contempt. Disgusting.

heathspeedwell · 01/08/2024 18:01

Worth watching this interview with Caster where he refers to women and girls as 'they' not 'us'. Which I think we can all agree is a strange thing for someone to do if they identify as a woman.

The trans folk I know (admittedly all 3 of them) just want to live their lives and we should be all for that

however, for a man who can't cut it in the sporting world to decide he is a woman is a total mockery of the fight regular trans people have had to endure

isn’t it odd the number of trans women who are in the sporting world?
