Angela Carini is the incredibly brave Italian boxer who had her Olympic dream shattered in less than a minute after being punched in the face by Imane Khelif, a male competitor who was disqualified from the women’s World Championships last year because his testosterone levels were too high.
Everyone should be saying her name. Over and over and over again.

For fucks sake.

SHE is female.
SHE has female reproductive organs.
SHE could carry a baby to term.

Look up Swyers Syndrome. This is where you start to see there is a wider spectrum of sex than just 'male' and 'female'.

What feels wrong to ME, and I'm not an expert, as I'm 99% sure most of you aren't either, is that she may well be in the wrong weight/ size category and if her levels were off then she shouldn't have competed.

But she hasn't 'gone through a male puberty'.

Be angry that they fucked up, but for fucks sake be angry for the right reasons and stop calling her a man.

Take that up with the IBA who has tested both men and declared that they are not female.

If they are not female and have XY chromosomes then they are male. Both of them.

miniaturepixieonacid · 02/08/2024 00:11

helplessandheartbroke - surely she doesn't have a penis? If she did, she would have been brought up as a boy and the whole issue wouldn't have occured in the first place?

As an aside, I'm also a bit turned off by how specifically horrifying everyone finds it that a woman has been punched in the face by a man in the name of sport. The horrifying thing for me is that someone has been punched in the face by someone else in the name of sport. Male or female, that's not sport, it's violence. The sooner Boxing disappears from the Olympics (2028 with a bit of luck) the better.

I dunno. Not checked. Pondering this myself....

Theemeperorsnewclothes · 02/08/2024 00:16

I see what you’re trying to say @Littlepinkstarsbyradish it must be a tough road for those who are truly transgender/transitioning. I cannot understand your point though that females should have empathy for a biological man competing against them in any sport, never mind a physical contact sport where they could realistically have their career or life ended because of the real biological physical differences between a man and a woman. No one said they have to compete as a man or never compete again. I think the collective voice is that they do not compete with women, in the women’s sporting categories. “And the implication that this is male violence seems to me unfair” I think it 100% is male violence as that competitor had a choice not to get in the ring. They chose to use their physical advantage in that situation, knowing their own physicality and that of their female opponent. If that isn’t male violence, I don’t know what is. Very similar to the argument around safe spaces for women.

oh my goodness - she is not trans!!

You must have seen evidence most other people haven't then. Link it, please.

murasaki · 02/08/2024 00:23

So would Tom Daley have picked this boxer as a surrogate then? I think not.

Thulpelly · 02/08/2024 00:23

Going to refer to this situation anytime anyone thinks biological sex is clear and obvious, male or female.

Sex is entirely clear cut.

Gender is a social construct designed to oppress the female sex. Hth.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/08/2024 00:26

"Gender" is clear cut, because it's just a set of stereotypes for each sex. Sex is binary but members of both sexes can have disorders of sex development.

We will be waiting for it! That lot love to post statements as if it's factual evidence but never have the hard evidence to back it up!! Keep calling them out, every single time. Demand a credible, factual link!

If you have female genitalia but XY chromosomes. That’s not clear cut.

Helleofabore · 02/08/2024 00:28

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 01/08/2024 23:55

Most of the people who have grown up female/in a body that has developed female anatomy (such as this athlete) find out their XY chromosomes very late into teenage years or in their early 20s, this is true for non-athletes too

Just seems like this discussion is lacking in empathy for how big a shift it must be to expect someone to either compete as a man or never compete again? And the implication that this is male violence seems to me unfair, or at least lacking in nuance for this situation. These aren't Trans women. And they havent necessarily had any indication of being "men" before.

Plus this particular athlete has been beaten by women at least 9 times previously, its not like they are steamrolling the competition?

i have lots of reservations about trans participation in some sports, and how different sports deal with DSD, but i dont think that means i have to forego my humanity and compassion?

'Plus this particular athlete has been beaten by women at least 9 times previously, its not like they are steamrolling the competition?'

This is a claim that is based on falsehoods. The falsehood being that you are using this male athlete's mediocrity as leverage to allow them to compete in a protected sports category that they should not be competing in.

It doesn't matter that this athlete has not been good enough to win. They are male. Their body has been tested and found to have advantage, as per the IBA's statement.

Using the logic that you have used here, as long as this person doesn't ever win, that should be fine. It doesn't matter how many female athletes they harm along way. Either through injury or through taking a female athletes opportunity when they are male.

The point is, this is a category boundary being ignored for the sake of a person's feelings or to uphold their perception about themselves when that perception does not reflect their material reality.

Would you feel the same way about an unfit 25 year old playing a contact sport with a female who is over 65 years old when it was a masters category event? Is that ok with you as long as that person did not win? What if them being there significantly injured the competing female athletes ? That is what the logic you are using results in.

Male people have, in general, more than 160% the punch power of a typical female. These athletes that the IOC have allowed have at least that much more power behind their punch. We know this because the IBA stated they were not female people and that they had been assessed to have advantage over female athletes. ie. these are male athletes.

There are many physical advantages that these male athletes have. I am happy to list more if you need.

However, the female athletes that they are punching have safety needs that are rather different than male people need. Female people have a greater risk of brain damage due to our more delicate brain fibres. This has been studied and is documented. So... that 160+% power difference is significant to the safety of female athletes.

Additionally, our bones are less dense. So not only are female people more prone to brain damage from a punch, but we are more prone to have our bones broken by that punch. Especially facial bones.

So, no. It doesn't matter one fucking bit that this male athlete might lose.

No, she’s a male bodied boxer, boxing a female bodied boxer. Someone’s daughter.

He has XY chromosomes which makes him a man, though?

And I'm angry that a man punched a woman for sport.

Why do you think that's not the right reason to be angry? Surely women can be angry about things that naturally make us angry? Like men being allowed to punch us for entertainment.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/08/2024 00:30

Going to refer to this situation anytime anyone thinks biological sex is clear and obvious, male or female.

You're going to refer to a situation where a woman got beaten up by a male?

Thulpelly · 02/08/2024 00:28

If you have female genitalia but XY chromosomes. That’s not clear cut.

They won't be fully developed, and you are male in this scenario. Possinly observed female at birth which is where I have a little sympathy for this boxer, but fundamentally, in every cell in your body, male.

murasaki · 02/08/2024 00:27

I removed gender to not confuse! But I did mean sex is not always clear cut.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/08/2024 00:32

If you have female genitalia but XY chromosomes

It's a medical disorder. XY is male. Sometimes there are problems and a foetus develops down the wrong pathway for their sex.

Have a look at the Algerian boxers personal Instagram page & decide for yourself...

No, it's the same... It actually really does cement home the general belief on here. The tests results state XY & I believe the Algerian boxer belongs firmly in the XY species as tests proved.
