Angela Carini is the incredibly brave Italian boxer who had her Olympic dream shattered in less than a minute after being punched in the face by Imane Khelif, a male competitor who was disqualified from the women’s World Championships last year because his testosterone levels were too high.
Everyone should be saying her name. Over and over and over again.

I just lol'd at that picture

Why don't people just believe what their EYES are telling them!

Absolutely ridiculous!!!

Have you never wondered @Tandora why trans men infiltrating mens sport isn't an issue?

That's because it doesn't happen.
Because trans men wouldn't make the team. Not at club level or national level and certainly not at elite level. I imagine they donbt even try to. Because trans men have the physiology of women and simply cannot beat biological males.

That's because as you have been told repeatedly, people who have gone through male puberty have physiological characteristics which give them sporting advantage.

This means that mediochre male athletes who wouldn't qualify in the mens competition will take medals, money and aspiration away from female athletes, from grass routes to elite level.
Which will in turn destroy women's sport because frankly, why would they bother?

You ok with that?
Of course you are.

For clarity, Imane Khelif is not trans; this is a similar case to Caster Semenya. khelif has always lived as a girl / woman from birth, and appears to have different levels of testosterone and/or other sex markers to the average female, but this is not the same as someone being born male and transitioning to female, more like someone with complex biological status that is not cleanly one or the other.

Isn't Caster Semenya a man though, just one with a medical condition?

Yes I am a feminist; because I believe that women are equal to men. I believe we live in a deeply sexist and misogynistic society that discriminates against women and privileges men, and condones and justifies male violence against women. I dedicate my personal and professional life to challenging the conditions that support male privilege wherever I see them.

I also support the rights and dignity of trans, sex variant and gender non conforming people of all types; I recognise that the biological and social aspects of sex and gender are diverse, varied and complex. I recognise fear of trans and sex variant people as rooted in homophobia and misogyny.

Discriminating against people with sex variations and trans people does not define feminism.

agree. But apparently, we must empathise with a male athlete who has known that they have an advantage over female athletes and yet has actively chosen to compete in the female boxing at the olympics.

It really does need posting again and again.

I don't think people have thought deeply about this enough. This male athlete has known they have a physical advantage over female athletes. They were banned under the IBA regulations AFTER TESTING. There is no excuse. There background story is irrelevant because many athletes learn that they cannot compete in events that they don't qualify for, even when they don't qualify for reasons beyond their control and for reasons that they were unaware of.

Competing in the protected category of female sports is not a consolation prize for any male athlete with pubertal advantage who cannot win in an open competition. No other protected category has been forced, as this category has, athletes who fall outside that protected characteristic.

It is truly fucked up.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/08/2024 21:39

Excluding male people from things for female people isn't "discrimination". Failing to uphold women's rights is not feminism. Centring male people in women's rights is both discrimination and sexism.

UpThePankhurst · 01/08/2024 21:40

It is.

That is an athlete perfectly happy to batter his way to the top of women's sports and enjoy the financial and other rewards of doing so. Enabled by the IOC. And women put up against him will pretty much have to do what Angela did today and what Lynne Pinches is doing. Just stand aside, hand over the competition and let him have his way.

This is male supremacism on a binary, sexed basis. If you are at all confused on sex classes, can I suggest just simply looking at who benefits and who gets the broken nose?

She proves a point, but a better result would have been her showing up, and then walking slowly out in protest.

Don't. Nothing is her fault.

The only better result is her not being placed against a man.

Yes he is a man, he is male.

It appears this has been known as far back as his teen years. He is only a "woman" when it comes to sport. He has also fathered children.

The poor woman is already being blamed by misogynists for 'cowardice' and not having stayed until she was really hurt before she surrendered.

The outcry over cases like this and Steven van de Velde makes me wonder how many instances of sexism there were in previous Olympics that we just didn't know about. Probably a lot.

I had no idea about the 3 DSD athletes winning in the Rio Olympics. I'm not much interested in sport and I wasn't really following this issue at that time.

WickedSerious · 01/08/2024 21:43

Whoahnelly · 01/08/2024 18:47

Any argument to the contrary of this thread gets deleted by mumsnet which speaks volumes.

The boxer is a woman who has been female her entire life, raised to be female and presents as female. She is not trans and a lot of these arguments are discriminatory against intersex/those with DSD.

Say what now?

No one knows this. It’s presumptive that these males have a DSD. But in reality it doesn’t matter. Both male. Both shouldn’t be in the women’s category.

No feminist ever supported men (XY chromosomes) competing in women's sport. You're utterly deluded and you're certainly not a feminist.

littlbrowndog · 01/08/2024 21:47

I game with at present about 40 men and tbh tandora they are all outraged by this

these men are more feminist than you

NotBadConsidering · 01/08/2024 21:49

And bringing up Semenya: people who knew railed against Semenya, a man, being in women’s competition for YEARS and were met with abuse, derision, dismissal, sexism, misogyny and anti-scientific nonsense. Lynsey Sharp received death threats for speaking out. And here we are almost a decade on with the same problem.

Screamingabdabz · 01/08/2024 21:51

“I recognise that the biological and social aspects of sex and gender are diverse, varied and complex.”

It is not complex at all. There are only two sexes. You are not a feminist if you support this public assault masquerading as sport. Your opinion is shameful.

NonPlayerCharacter · 01/08/2024 21:51

The idea that women deserve no protections or accommodations because they are "equal to men" is hateful, wilfully ignorant MRA bullshit that is rolled out whenever they want to justify abusing women's natural disadvantages. It's "I don't see race" for sex. It is dishonest and disingenuous. Women are indeed equal to men and that's why that equality needs to be protected - for example, by providing female only sporting opportunities so that they can indeed have an equal opportunity to men that would not otherwise exist. To prioritise men wishing to enter these competitions to promote their self-image, taking an opportunity away from women and opening it to men who want it but don't need it is not equality. It is straight up male supremacy. To call it feminism is obscene.

Interestingly, a lot of men, like my abusive father, liked the idea of being able to hit women "because they wanted equality". Now it's official policy.

It's not equality, it's male supremacy. It's sick, it's despicable, it's hateful, it's ignorant and it fools nobody.
