Angela Carini is the incredibly brave Italian boxer who had her Olympic dream shattered in less than a minute after being punched in the face by Imane Khelif, a male competitor who was disqualified from the women’s World Championships last year because his testosterone levels were too high.
Everyone should be saying her name. Over and over and over again.

Anybody reading this who’s based in France? Surely, if the governing body of this man’s sport has declared him male, then he can be reported to the police for assault? Or maybe IOC reported for organising illegal fights?

I’m only half being facetious. It’s beyond parody.

Can she not sue? Or take some sort of legal action?

Any argument to the contrary of this thread gets deleted by mumsnet which speaks volumes.

The boxer is a woman who has been female her entire life, raised to be female and presents as female. She is not trans and a lot of these arguments are discriminatory against intersex/those with DSD.

He is male, he failed sex testing. We also don't know if he was raised female, if he has a DSD, if he says he is a transwoman or if he just had his legal papers changed. And to be honest, I don't care.

He knows he has xy, he was barred by the IBA for failing sex testing. The IOC knows this as well. So no sob story about how he has had a difficult life, he knows and he still decided to compete to beat up a woman in the boxing ring

CakeAtFour · 01/08/2024 19:32

So far we’ve had an opening ceremony with a heartwarming little piece on diversity featuring men and transwomen / drag queens …the Dutch fielding a child rapist athlete…and male versus female boxing

Paris 2024. So modern and inclusive <sigh>

DysonSphere · 01/08/2024 19:33

Despite being ill, I wish I was there to protest, I'm so angry.

DoIWantTo · 01/08/2024 19:34

I absolutely applaud her bravery, it takes more guts than that man will ever have to walk away from a match. She should never have been put in this position and he should never have been able to compete.

Inlaw · 01/08/2024 19:35

DoIWantTo · 01/08/2024 19:36

@CakeAtFour France and the olympics have made very clear who they give a shit about, and as always it ain’t women! Absolutely sickening that they’ve put a pedophile in the mix too.

Italiangreyhound · 01/08/2024 19:37

Very, very sad.

It's not doing women and girls any favours to allow this! My own opinion is it is not dong ordinary trans people outside of sport any favours either. IMHO.

I have little interest in sport or the Olympics and I am sure at some point this travesty will be one of the factors (along with the costs) that will make this kind of so-called 'professional' sport become even more irrelevant.

Sad for the people who train for so very long and so hard to be unfairly and unequally matched in a sport that is meant to be sex-segregated.

Whoiam · 01/08/2024 19:37

The length of the arms is a giveaway. Surely anyone can see it's a male. We are truly in the end times .

Dashel · 01/08/2024 19:48

If there is any doubt then surely err on the side of caution.

i have no doubt that this fight should never have happened #IStandWithAngelaCarini

californiaisdreaming · 01/08/2024 19:49

Thank you for making me aware of it, I hadn't heard about this.

Have any offical boxing organisations come out and said anything about it?

Or any women's organisations?

Who is the Dutch athlete?
That is shocking.

JudgeJ · 01/08/2024 19:52

PadstowGirl · 01/08/2024 18:18

This is absolutely appalling.
What can we do about this? I would happily go to a protest.

We need all the real women who are drawn against him/it whatever to withdraw and leave him/it to be awarded a gold medal in an empty arena.

bridgetreilly · 01/08/2024 19:52

It’s not about trans, it’s about DSD. Some of which may make people ineligible to compete against women and unable to compete against men. That is just how it is and women should not be expected to make way for them.

The volleyball player. He was 19 she was 12.

How anyone agreed to play in a team with him is beyond me.

Wait I’m really confused; people are saying that her competitor was born female but has elevated testosterone - is that not true? Or were they born male and have transitioned?

Apparently they have some sort of intersex disorder, possibly Swyer syndrome from what I've read (no idea if it's accurate though).

bathofbeans · 01/08/2024 19:54

Another female boxer put in a ring with a biological male who had to walk away, only 8 months ago - Canada . . . s

No one even told her she was about to get in the ring with a biological male. She found out minutes before the match.

Are we 100% sure they were born male? The wording in the articles is really confusing. Why don’t they say trans if she’s trans?

I could be raised as a wolf, identify as a wolf, present as a wolf.

It doesn't make me a wolf.

ExtrovertedIntrovert1 · 01/08/2024 19:57

I'm with Angela.
I am completely pro trans and don't have any problem whatsoever if someone genetically female wants to live life as a male or vice versa. It makes no difference to me at all, why would it?
BUT
In competitive sports it is undeniable that a GENETICALLY male person has a different musculoskeletal system.
If you look at two skeletons you can tell which one is male and which is female from the shape of the bones. It's just genetics. Nothing to do with build or hormones etc. I think we learnt this in GCSE biology! Maybe even earlier!
Therefore anyone genetically XY should not compete in any physical sport against XX. It's sad because this boxer clearly has a lot of talent but it simply isn't fair to let them compete in a female competition.
Sometimes in life we have to accept that things aren't possible. Like if you're born with no arms you no doubt accept you can't be a champion pianist. Plenty of other stuff you can excell in...
I think genetically male athletes competing in female competitions should just have to accept it in a similar manner and just do the sport for "fun" (or maybe have a different trans Olympics?)

OvaHere · 01/08/2024 19:59

Just in case everyone wasn't angry enough about the future of female sport Biden's destruction of Title IX goes into effect today in 24 states (it's been blocked in Federal court by the other 26 states).

Here is some more reading for any one who is interested.

I had a good idea of that already, (thanks to all the FWR posters, who have linked similar studies) but that encapsulates the salient points very well. I think it will help top curious, but undecided readers, along with those who've previously been misinformed by the BBC etc.

The emotionally driven types will probably continue to cling to the absolute mince, pushed out by organisations, such as the BBC and the IOC etc.
