Angela Carini is the incredibly brave Italian boxer who had her Olympic dream shattered in less than a minute after being punched in the face by Imane Khelif, a male competitor who was disqualified from the women’s World Championships last year because his testosterone levels were too high.
Everyone should be saying her name. Over and over and over again.

Sky making a desperate attempt at being impartial - the bare facts still show how FUCKING INSANE this is.

https://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/boxing/13188790/explained-controversy-over-boxing-gender-policy

I can't quite verbalise how angry and upset I am on behalf of Angela Carini and all other women in sports being stolen by men.

What can I do with this anger? I feel like I'm going to fucking explode.

Omlettes has a thread in FWR and is linking contact details for various people you can write to about it.

Words fail I'm so angry, but by god she is brave. Personally I feel sick and 'triggered' it reminds me of the first time an ex punched me on the thigh...

Poor woman.

you don’t see any ‘transgender’ men I.e WOMEN competing in the male categories do you. Because they clearly wouldn’t have a chance at winning. Shocking that it has been allowed

WarriorN · 01/08/2024 19:10

Anyone fancy a trip to Paris?

There is a protest being organised afaic tell

If you can show some stats that reveal this person has never been beaten in the ring by all means present them. I would think their wins and losses will be quite well documented online and not just on Wikipedia.

It doesn't really matter though, in the grand scheme of things. The IBA has tested him, and the tests show he is a man. Men should not be competing in women's sports EVER. That's the bottom line.

Hes a cheat, we all know he's a cheat, and we all know the Olympic Committee allowed him to cheat.

Windymoore · 01/08/2024 19:13

Naumann · 01/08/2024 18:37

Khelif has been beaten by plenty of women before. Including at the last Olympics and world Championships. Maybe boxing just isn’t for Carini.

some of the reporting of this has been ridiculous. Yes they probably shouldn’t be competing, but immediately been jumped on by both sides of the trans debate when it’s not really the same issue.

Boxing isn't her thing? She made it to the Olympics on an even playing field. Just because the other one isn't the best even with the advantage of maleness, doesn't belittle Carini's achievement. Listen to yourself!! You are not only blaming the victim, but taking piss poor little pot shots at a high tier athlete. It's disgusting

Any argument to the contrary of this thread gets deleted by mumsnet which speaks volumes.

The boxer is a woman who has been female her entire life, raised to be female and presents as female. She is not trans and a lot of these arguments are discriminatory against intersex/those with DSD.

Erm XY chromosome means male. Dont tell porkies. It was a man. He punched like a man.

VotesForWomen · 01/08/2024 19:15

What does a feminist have to do to be considered rabid, anyway? Froth at the mouth and have lockjaw? Or was it a typo for rabbit, and if so do our ears have to be long or will a headband with fake ones do?

ll09sm · 01/08/2024 19:17

Ever wondered why men pretending to be women always compete in women’s categories?

Why don’t we see women pretending to be men competing in men’s categories.

So peculiar. Any ideas?

Mondaysocial · 01/08/2024 16:47

Someone elsewhere has commented that a female boxer could also have broken her nose.

It wasn't that. Male boxers punch with 162% more force than women do. Angela will have felt the sheer force of the punch and realised that she could not go on.

There are scientific studies that show that trans women are physically stronger than bio women and retain their genetic masculine advantages even after transitions. They can still run faster, jump higher, punch harder, so it beggars belief that the IOC and other bodies aren't taking heed of the science. Cowards the lot of them.

Appalonia · 01/08/2024 19:19

I'm just going to keep posting this on all the threads about this so you can see for yourself what actually happened. Which is, a MAN punched a woman in the head. Twice. To protect her own life, an Olympic athlete has to stop the fight herself because NO-ONE in authority has considered her safety. Absolutely disgraceful.

I wonder.

Are there any trans men competing in men’s categories? If not, why not? 🤔

There is a transman boxer but she's competing in the female category (doesn't takes testosterone)

SweetcornFritter · 01/08/2024 19:05

If you read my post again you will see that I said I don’t believe they should be pitted against other women. The rest of my comment was purely factual.

But they could have deliberately lost (Lia Thomas went from smashing records to not winning a few races when focus first turn to them), they might be disqualifications from the event when they were deemed ineligible just before the final, they could have faced phenomenal women or women who just scaped a split points decision by managing not to get hit or they could be not very good or it could have been the very first few fights when they were young and inexperienced but even if all or none of those are the case the second they discovered they are not female they should have stepped away from the female category.

Nutellla · 01/08/2024 19:23

It is quite clearly a young lad boxing in red there. No female boxer looks, move or throw their arms around like that.

Jesus, no Wonder she cried at the end

Iamtired123 · 01/08/2024 19:24

Isn't Imane Khelif a biological woman just with high testosterone?

No.

Tutorpuzzle · 01/08/2024 19:26

Anybody reading this who’s based in France? Surely, if the governing body of this man’s sport has declared him male, then he can be reported to the police for assault? Or maybe IOC reported for organising illegal fights?

I’m only half being facetious. It’s beyond parody.

Yorkshireblond · 01/08/2024 19:27

Absolutely outrageous that he could be allowed to compete. Women are going to be put off going into competitive sports as what’s the point if it’s not a fair competition.

BornLippy88 · 01/08/2024 19:27

Heartbreaking. I was almost hoping she would forfeit like Lynne pinches.

There was a studiously neutral piece in the New York times about this, apparently he competes in the under 66 kilo category?? I know they lose water weight before weigh in etc but it doesn't seem right either.

gailforce2 · 01/08/2024 19:27

The Daily Mail on line have this as back as their headline story - they are not letting this go and the footage of Angela Carini explaining why she had to walk away from her Olympic dream is really distressing.

spannasaurus · 01/08/2024 19:21

Ah so biological men are women. Biological women are women. Biological men pretending to be women are women. And biological women pretending to be men are women.

But only men are men.

Got it. So much clearer now.

I knew there would be a good reason for it.

Isn't Imane Khelif a biological woman just with high testosterone?

'On 24 March 2023, IBA disqualified athletes Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif from the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships New Delhi 2023. This disqualification was a result of their failure to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women’s competition, as set and laid out in the IBA Regulations. This decision, made after a meticulous review, was extremely important and necessary to uphold the level of fairness and utmost integrity of the competition.

Point to note, the athletes did not undergo a testosterone examination but were subject to a separate and recognized test, whereby the specifics remain confidential. This test conclusively indicated that both athletes did not meet the required necessary eligibility criteria and were found to have competitive advantages over other female competitors.'
