The upper middle class favour immigration because the alternative would be paying locals more and that would men them paying higher taxes to support the wage demands by care workers/Nurses/council workers etc.

You are not wrong OP.

That and because the middle class progressives also see anything like favouring uncontrolled immigration like a badge of honour. It’s a new status symbol to champion all of these ‘causes’ regardless of the consequences for the economy or society.

It’s the Martha’s Vineyard syndrome. These people are actually satirical.

"No, I am not upper middle class, So it wouldnt fall on me. My Mum is 93 and lives in her own house. She still helps out with child care of her great grand children. Hopefully I will live as long and as healthily as Mum."

You don't pay council tax?

A proportion of Council tax goes towards social care.

If you want to pay better wages to carers - and I agree they are underpaid- we need to pay more towards it.

Surely if you cant attract workers, you offer better conditions or you pay more.

Some jobs require years of training! My allied health care job requires a 3-4 yr uni degree as minimum. Govt cuts have led to a shortage of ppl in my profession which has led to NHS in my area having little option but to recruit internationally to fill vacancies now! It’s not always just about more money if there is a shortage of trained staff in a sector which takes years to train for.

£20 an hour - lol.

£20 x 8 hours x 5 days x 52 weeks = £41,600 = £48,000 (approximately) with on costs x 14 staff = £672,000

£672,000 on nursery staff alone.

Do have any idea what nursery fees would have to be to cover that?

So you want someone to look after your kids for NMW ?

I think that many of the EDL/Reform/Britain First types have now realised that they can’t use the Southport Tragedy to try and start a race war, so they are looking for other angles e.g. infiltrating online forums etc. Turns out the 17 year old was born in the UK and didn’t arrive on a small boat! Also most decent people were disgusted by the Far Right riots in Southport which may have hopefully turned some people off them.

Isn’t that currently what happens?

echt · 01/08/2024 00:01

OP, I can see that producing more than one sentence, or offering any reasoned argument is apparently not for you but here goes.

The tax you appear to be referring is not predicated on class but on income, so what income level do you think should be more heavily taxed? Or do you think other money or assets should be more heavily taxed?

Why are ‘immigrants’ being offered better housing? How do you know this?

They are being placed into family hostels and locals who need housed are left as ‘homeless from
home’. I know this as I work in this field. And it is causing major annoyance. There simply isn’t the housing available and locals are less of a priority as they have some one to bed down with whereas if you are a migrant that isn’t the case so get the hostel place or B and B.

Martha’s Vineyard syndrome - never heard that before. This stuff is anecdotal and not based in any fact. Where did you find this out from?

Exactly. I am appalled by the riots in Southport.

For 50k a year, I could be though

Okay so care home staff are now paid 50k a year. Who pays for the care home staff? Suddenly no one can afford a place and all the care homes close. Old people who need care die off...

What I’m driving at here is why are people with no local connection being housed where you live? That’s what I don’t understand.

No the upper middle class pay hiigher taxes.

I own a nursery. I know how much money it costs to run it.

The funding rates for 3 year olds are £4-6 an hour, depending on where you live. For the staff to be paid £20 an hour, those rates would have to increase to about £14-16 per hour. Nursery fees would have to be £200 a day plus.

It would literally end the nursery sector because no one could afford it.

Why is the housing stock going to people with no local connection? Have you written to your MP about it?

Because it isn’t in the scoring system. Not all providers use local connection.
it doesn’t personally impact me- I am speaking from what I see in work every day. This is NI and I really won’t be shocked if there is rioting.

Maybe they do it based on general need, which is fair. Local connection shouldn’t trump basic need.

Delphiniumandlupins · 01/08/2024 00:08

I worked for a Housing Association 20 years ago and we had dropped the need for "a local connection" back then. There were plenty other housing priorities taken into account when allocating.

User8646382 · 01/08/2024 00:08

And what does class have to do with wealth?

Immigration is being used to sustain unsupportable business models.

I would guess the large profits generated by care homes mean there is, in fact, spare cash to raise wages. Not to 50k a year, but certainly if the profits were less, wages could be raised.

Hateliars34 · 01/08/2024 00:09

MeouwCat · 01/08/2024 00:04

That I would agree with, but it still wouldn't cover 50k salaries for all care home staff. Care homes are money pits.

Plus we can't sustain the ageing population without increasing the working population, and people just aren't having enough children.

YourOpinionIsWrong · 01/08/2024 00:09

The problem with taxing - I don’t know if what you mean by upper middle is the same as how the English categorise classes, so I’m using the phrase here to mean people who earn lots of money and generate a lot of wealth. If we were too zealous with some kind of social conscience tax system they would simply move to another part of the world where they can be as greedy and selfish as they like. Then the UK loses wealth. I mean that’s one way of looking at it.

You fool, this country is built on the ingenuity and hard work of immigrants - from the Windrush generation to the Indians who came from Uganda and the Indian sub-continent. It was an immigrant midwife who delivered my baby and an immigrant GP who attended to me for years. An immigrant property developer built the house I live in and an immigrant builder provided me with his skills and services. Immigrants are smart, ambitious, hard-working people who set high expectations for their children. Many immigrants I know are a model of resilience. Sorry to break this to you, immigrants are EVERYWHERE and the country would fall apart without them. Racists are also everywhere and racism has nothing to do with class or education.
