To not know how people can afford Heinz Beans?

Well how? My budget will only stretch to supermarket own brand beans, yet everywhere I look people are eating Heinz beans. How do they afford it?

OP posts:

I don't know how old you are, OP, but when I had just started renting my own house in the mid-90s and had a very, very tight budget, Tesco used to do a loss leader where their basic brand beans cost minus 1p. So for each can you bought (limit was 3 per shop I think) 1p was deducted from your bill. The beans weren't marvellous - about 1/4 bean juice - but who'd complain when you were being paid to eat them?

We’re being robbed though. It’s cheaper to buy them in Spain, for example, than it is in bloody Asda.

That's where I've gone wrong, should have booked a holiday to Spain rather than Northumberland.

They’re all buying them on credit cards.

I can’t wait until the bailiffs come and repossess all my SILs beans.

Oh her.

She deserves it. And they should repossess her jaunty wee bonnet while they're at it.

Cactiverde · 31/07/2024 18:49

I could buy them if I wanted to, but I can't justify the price 🤣 Tesco ones are excellent anyway and my kids absolutely love beans, so we get through alot. They will quite often ask for a snack of "beans in a bowl"... (It is as literal as it sounds) and eldest likes them cold straight out of the can. In fact, thinking about the amount they eat, I probably would end up in debt if I did buy heinz... I'll stick to Tesco ones

Reallybadidea · 31/07/2024 18:50

We started saving for our kids future baked beans before they were even born, but if the government puts VAT on baked beans I don't know what we'll do. Might have to start eating haricot beans instead 😢

RedHelenB · 31/07/2024 18:51

By getting them when they're on offer.

Wtf is it with all these 'to not understand how people afford xx' posts? Is it bots? Bored teenagers???

Do some people get their beans on a lease? I know some people do that with cars.

You can obviously afford alcohol.

OldTinHat · 31/07/2024 18:53

Heinz beans are the best!

My local community pantry always have them, hooray!

Buddhistretreatwithcrisps · 31/07/2024 18:53

OMG I think this might be the funniest thread I've ever read 😂🤣

Topofthemountain · 31/07/2024 18:53

Fortunately my soon to be departing to university DD doesn't like BB's. Massive saving right there.

lucysnowe2 · 31/07/2024 18:54

(You're part of the problem OP 😄)

DogDaysNeverEnd · 31/07/2024 18:54

You're all very silly.

You should have done what my grannie did; bought heinz mini tins single serve in 1972 (before they were popular mind and were a bit rough), with inflation they have now grown to catering size and we regularly bathe in beans just because we can. I do feel sorry for those less fortunate but thems the breaks.

I’ve seen people in council estates buying Heinz, every other trolley had them in. I earn 100k and can only afford dented tins of dust

And red hot gravel!

SeeSeeRider · 31/07/2024 18:55

Do people really use so many they have a ready made abbreviation ('BBs')?

Panicked 18 year olds who will soon be off to uni. (Apart from aforementioned DD)

Singinghollybob · 31/07/2024 18:56

I was able to buy them via salary sacrifice scheme in work. There no way I could afford them otherwise.

Whatwouldnanado · 31/07/2024 18:58

M&S beans are fab and indistinguishable from Heinz.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/07/2024 18:59

I used to love Heinz I. Refused to eat anything else

I work hard so if wanted to spend £1 on a tin fair enough

One day I tried Aldi as friends kept saying about them

This was years back when really cheap and think 26p or 4 for £1

I was amazed how nice they were and swapped to them

I tried Heinz's a few months later and find them rank now

Watery - bland and hard and no taste or thick sauce like Aldi

People should def do the taste test they do on eat well for less

Anyway to answer your question

Priorities - people spend they money on what they want

People who smoke for example they say they are skint but then spend £20/40 a week on cigs

Koko83 · 31/07/2024 18:59

How do you know it’s Heinz they are eating? Are they taking tins to work or are you spying on them?

Topofthemountain · 31/07/2024 18:59

That's a lie perpetuated by MN.😂

Cherryflavouranything · 31/07/2024 19:00

We put money aside every month. It’s just a matter of priorities.

ItsAlrightDarling · 31/07/2024 19:00

Definitely loans/credit/living beyond their means.

B1anche · 31/07/2024 19:00

Psssst...follow me to the Dark Web. I'll show you where to get cheap Heinz beans.
