To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

I’ve never experienced thigh rub, it must be a shape thing and we’re all so different. Personally I find dresses to be the coolest, most comfortable thing to wear in the heat.

Agreed

I wear bicycle shorts under dresses. It's so much more comfortable imo. Not ideal for very short dresses - if you want to wear a short sundress can you get one of those ones that have built in shorts underneath? I think Halara do a few versions (but I've never tried them so can't speak to quality).

I saw some lovely ones online (WITH POCKETS!!) & if I was a dress wearer I'd definitely wear these, Pinklily on FB have lovely ones

Pipsquiggle · 31/07/2024 14:03

Another vote for chub rub shorts from snag tights

PiggieWig · 31/07/2024 14:03

It’s a shape thing for sure. I’m afflicted and wear snag chub run shorts. I am a bit chubby these days but I first experienced the horror of chub run when I was a skinny eight year old.

OldTinHat · 31/07/2024 14:05

I'm a size 20 and live in dresses. The trick is use roll on deodorant between your thighs. Trust me!

Yousay55 · 31/07/2024 14:08

I’m in hot but beautiful sweaty Italy with a dress and chub run shorts from Snag. They are the bees knees. The only place that isn’t sweaty are my chunky thighs. Highly recommend them!

CrunchyCarrot · 31/07/2024 14:09

Dresses are the coolest thing I can wear right now, but I have very thin legs and no thigh rub!

henlake7 · 31/07/2024 14:09

I hadnt heard of liquid talc before this thread so Ive learned something today!😃
I just bought some chub rub shorts from Amazon....thank goodness they are such a big thing nowadays. I remember as a teenager you just had to put up with it!
No avoiding it for some of us. Im a slim size 10 who runs and exercises tons and my legs still rub (I also have to shop plus size for boots coz of chunky calves, even at a size 8!).

The OP was AIBU to wonder how women wear dresses in the heat. It’s a daft question. Women do not universally suffer from thigh rub. It’s entirely dependent on weight and shape. It’s not a snotty and unhelpful response to the question since many of us don’t experience the issue and are perfectly comfortable wearing dresses in hot weather. Your reply however…..

you don’t think it’s snotty and unhelpful to say ‘I’ve never experienced this and by the way you must be fat’?

Get an absolute grip of yourself.

KreedKafer · 31/07/2024 14:11

Women have traditionally worn dresses for centuries. How have they coped throughout history?

For most of history, they were wearing their dresses over knee-length bloomers and/or some sort of tights or stockings. Those performed the same function, among other things, as a pair of anti-chafing shorts does today.

Also, just because people have done something for centuries, that doesn't mean it's never unpleasant for them.

What you're saying is a bit like replying to someone who is asking for blister plaster recommendations because they get blisters whenever they wear a new pair of boots by saying 'Well, I've never had this problem so anyone who does must have fat feet if they're rubbing on their shoes. People have worn shoes throughout history and they've always managed OK.'

KreedKafer · 31/07/2024 14:01

No, it really ISN'T to do with 'weight'. It's thigh shape and also, to a degree, how much you sweat and how sensitive your skin is. The chafing is just from friction made worse by sweat. Two thin thighs rubbing together will chafe just as much as two fat thighs, if you're someone whose skin reacts that way.

And not everyone's thighs touch at the top at all. Plenty of women have a 'thigh gap'. You're making some genuinely bizarre statements here.

I used to get this when I was a slim 11-year-old walking home from school in summer. I wasn't remotely overweight. My thighs touched at the very top. Never got any sort of chafing in cooler weather, but frequently got it on hot summer days.

As an adult, I've been a size 20, a size 8, and every size in between, and weight loss has never made the slightest jot of difference to thigh-rub.

I've also had a chafing rash on my shoulder from carrying a shoulder bag while wearing a slip dress in hot weather. Again, not a weight thing, just friction on skin that's damp from sweat.

Is it the heat making you sound so cross?
This is a discussion forum.
We can all have different opinions. And there are plenty other posters saying what I did.

You can get chafe patches if full shorts are too hot

Depends where you are a chubbo. If you have thunder-thighs, then it is problematic. I am a size 18 chubbo on matchstick bandy Asian legs, they don't rub together but I would look like a flowerbed in a dress, unfortunately, so don't venture into that territory.

Kelvinator1 · 31/07/2024 14:14

It's not size related - I'm a size 8-10 and I get this and always have done - I have big thighs!! I use Snag Chub Rub shorts

Nn9011 · 31/07/2024 14:14

Cream deodorant reapplied every hour is great. For breathable shorts though the big bloomer company have great ones for wearing in hot weather.

Cantabulous · 31/07/2024 14:15

It’s just the luck of the draw of how you’re made, isn’t it? I’m clinically obese but my thighs don’t rub together. I love wearing dresses in this weather (I worry I look like a badly upholstered sofa from the 80s but, meh, I can’t see myself!)

Sotiredmjmmy · 31/07/2024 14:16

I live in summer dresses and an overweight - liquid talc is the answer, it’s absolutely amazing!

Waffle78 · 31/07/2024 14:17

RedToothBrush · 31/07/2024 12:54

No easy way to say this without being blunt, but it has to be your weight or shape.

This isn't an issue I've ever come across.

Wow how patronising. We all carry weight differently. We're not all blessed with perfect figures.

PfishFood · 31/07/2024 14:17

Oh, and when I was 18 I was a size 8-10 and still had thighs that rubbed, so it's not just for the overweight!

Wednesdaysotherchild · 31/07/2024 14:19

I wear anti-chafing shorts - these are my favs as they have lots of holes down the sides by design and let a nice breeze in! https://www.thebigbloomerscompany.co.uk/products/urban-slip-shorts

FWIW, I’ve had my thighs chafe at every size from a skeletal size 10 teen to a size 18 middle aged pregnant lady. I am
broad framed and hipped but at any weight I just carry any extra mass on my upper thighs. It’s how I’m built…my petite mum is the same.

Urban anti chafing slip shorts

Seamless anti chafing shorts give you the edge on sweaty thighs & chub rub. Super cool, lightweight and breathable, they are ideal for wearing under dresses, but can also be worn as shorts. Six fun colours, and a sporty cutout design. Made in Italy.

AltitudeCheck · 31/07/2024 14:21

Silicon sex lube (very sparingly) on the parts that rub.

willWillSmithsmith · 31/07/2024 14:22

I don’t wear dresses very often but did recently as it was too hot for trousers. It was loose and midi length, it felt lovely. Although I’m overweight my thighs don’t really rub together (although they can ‘stick’ together in the heat).

Exactly.

And I'm a size 16 and don't have this problem!
