To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

Sloggi long length knickers. Absolute life saver.

Interesting thread!

Contributing factors so far: shape, weight, gait, perspiration.

I'm overweight and my thighs do rub together as I walk, but they don't cause me discomfort so it isn't an issue for me. I find dresses lovely and cool and don't like shorts on me.

This is entirely anecdotal but my pilates instructor says it’s to do with shoulder width. The narrower the shoulders the narrower the legs are set - she used to do this exercise with the class to show how asking people to stand with their feet shoulder width apart has people with very different sized gaps between their feet.

I’m not saying it is accurate in the population as I’ve no idea, but it was in a class of 20+ women. The narrowest shoulder people had closest set legs and it’s not something that diet or exercise can change. You can only work with what you have.

Ummm..obviously standing with feet shoulder width apart will make people stand with different gaps between their feet. Tells you nothing about the natural position ing of their feet though. I have very broad shoulders. I got thigh rub even when I was slim.

This! I'm not familiar with chub rub either...

Not familiar with reading the thread before commenting either. Many slim women have said they do get thigh rub, and several larger women have said they don’t.

Yes I think it’s more to do with hip width than shoulder width.

My hips are also very broad - I mean the pelvis itself, it the layer currently covering them. My midwife was delighted when she examined me as she said I’d have an easy time (I didn’t, but that was for different reasons). I get thigh rub even when quite slim.
I do have hypermobility though, which causes my ankles to turn in a bit when I walk. Maybe that’s what it is.

Oh, I know what it is. Was just agreeing with the other poster that it's not something I've ever had an issue with, so no problem wearing dresses. Just answering OP's question.

You were agreeing that it was about weight. It’s not.

I have literally never heard a slim woman complain about 'chub rub' because they have no 'chub' to 'rub'. Clue is in the name...

Have you missed literally countless posts to this thread to the contrary? Including at least one on this page alone….? Yikes.

Don’t call it chub rub then. That’s a slangy term made up by people who think it’s all about fat. It’s thigh rub. When thighs rub together. Lots of thin women on the thread have said so - if you had read it you would know that. I also experienced it even when slim.

PlumPeony · 01/08/2024 12:12

Linen shorts and top. Or linen dress with those shorts underneath. I've binned all polyester summer clothes!

I'm fat. I'd never heard of this before I read about it on here. It doesn't affect me.

I have never heard any woman complain of it because I don’t think people say “ oh my thighs are rubbing “ any more than they announce ”I think I’m about to fart.”
This thread is the first foray into the topic of chub rub for me BUT it is clear all sizes suffer.

henlake7 · 01/08/2024 13:53

I know I get it with my fairly chunky thighs and my mother also complained about it and she is built like a toffee apple! So even skinny legs can suffer, maybe it depends on how you walk as well?

Chub rub shorts for me....the one advantage they have is that when it gets really hot you can chuck the dress off indoors! Im currently home alone, dress is hanging over a chair and Im just in my shorts and bra!!LOL😆

No, I've seen all of them. Still not something I've come across in real life. I've heard of 'thigh gap' in slim women, but not 'chub rub'...

Generally it's called chaffing. I know of it because of my sport really, and it's mostly men that seem to suffer more than women.
I think sweat can definitely make it worse. People with more body fat will sweat more than those with less body fat just doing normal activities.
So maybe there is a correlation between thigh rub and overweight people.

But you said you’ve never heard of slim women complain about it. You either have or haven’t. If you’ve read the thread then you HAVE.
I’m not sure why you’re being so obtuse…

How do threads always get so argumentative? Honestly: it’s just chub rub.

What part don't you understand?
What people might be saying on an online forum bears no resemblance to what I've experienced/heard in real life, which is slim women referring to themselves having 'chub rub'. Hope that helps.
