To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

My thighs don't rub together. They did when I was heavier and roll on deodorant fixed the issue and lasts all day.

I can’t help thinking it must feel like you’ve peed yourself?

strungouteyes · 31/07/2024 20:19

I wear cotton cycle shorts underneath

thenightsky · 31/07/2024 20:20

Its also an age thing. I'm exactly the same weight and size as I was 10 years ago, when I could run around in dresses all day without my thighs even touching. Since i turned 60 its like my inner thighs have sort of sagged inwards (attractive not) so they now rub really badly. I have had to buy some chub rub shorts from Big Bloomers.

I've been looking at the Big Bloomer Company. What is their sizing like? I'm an 18 and I'm not sure whether to go for the 12-16 or 18-22 as they say they come up large,

missshilling · 31/07/2024 20:31

I read a thread on MN a couple of years ago where a few posters made some quite derisory comments about women with gaps between their thighs.

My thighs don’t touch. Dresses and skirts in warm weather are a complete non issue for me. I can wear whatever underwear I like, or none at all.

Garlickest · 31/07/2024 21:21

It must be shape & build as well, though, @missshilling. I'm a size 16-18 and haven't had a thigh gap since I was a teen with anorexia. Mine don't rub, though! (Touch wood!)

DaemonMoon · 31/07/2024 21:22

I'm sure I read its to do with the way the femur points. Straight down, a gap, inwards, no gap. Mine points inwards.

rockstarshoes · 31/07/2024 21:33

I think it's an age thing! I don't have fat legs never have had! Never used to suffer from chub rub but I do now,

I'm a 12 and I bought the 8 to 10 size. They are perfect, not at all tight, don't fall down or roll up.

For you, I'd say the 12 to 16 would be fine.

PonyPatter44 · 31/07/2024 22:25

I have the Big Bloomers chub rub shorts and they are life-changing! I have fat little legs and my thighs rub horribly, but the BB shorts allowed me to spend all day at an outdoor festival, on a very hot day, wearing a dress. Highly recommend.

They are VERY generously sized, so I would definitely get the 12-16 ones if you are size 18.

kiddietaxi · 31/07/2024 22:37

I love dresses in the summer, but I have always had a thigh gap. I didn’t even realise thighs rubbing together was a thing for people until I was in my 20s, when a friend of mine had to explain why she couldn’t walk very quickly in the heat. I would have to put on a lot of weight to get my legs to touch, whereas she wasn’t actually very big at all, we were just built differently. I think a lot of it is just down to bone structure differences.

I do too. And maybe weight carrying patterns: two people can be equally fat/ thin but wear it in different places.

Cobblersorchard · 31/07/2024 22:48

This is entirely anecdotal but my pilates instructor says it’s to do with shoulder width. The narrower the shoulders the narrower the legs are set - she used to do this exercise with the class to show how asking people to stand with their feet shoulder width apart has people with very different sized gaps between their feet.

I’m not saying it is accurate in the population as I’ve no idea, but it was in a class of 20+ women. The narrowest shoulder people had closest set legs and it’s not something that diet or exercise can change. You can only work with what you have.

WigglyVonWaggly · 31/07/2024 23:01

My thighs don’t rub together at all, even in the heat. Maybe you have narrow / angled hips or something structural going on?

Jumpingthruhoops · 31/07/2024 23:03

RedToothBrush · 31/07/2024 12:54

No easy way to say this without being blunt, but it has to be your weight or shape.

This isn't an issue I've ever come across.

This! I'm not familiar with chub rub either...

Hmm not sure about that. I would say I'm narrow shouldered.

I'd never even heard of chub rub until I read about it on here. I've been a size 6. I'm now an overweight , 65 year old size 14 to 16. Never had chub rub, always wear dresses. I don't know how people can bear wearing jeans or trousers in hot weather.

I'm old and fat. I've never had chub rub at any age or size.

Does lots of walking lessen chub rub?

No expertise on this, @FlipFlops4Me, but it must do - your thighs will be more toned, won't they?

Nope - I mentioned up thread that even when I was a size 8 (and apple shaped) I have always had chub rub, even though my legs were skinny.

i Am a size 14 now, but legs Are still very toned and slender given then amount of exercise I do, and genetics. And still have bad chub rub.

bridgetreilly · 31/07/2024 23:22

Solid deodorant on inner thighs works a treat for me.

justrecognisedmyneighbouronhere · 31/07/2024 23:28

@inthekiddle cotton cycling shorts style - check out Freemans catalogue or very. Game changers!

I'd have thought hip width made much more difference, and pear is the most common shape among British women.

JaceLancs · 31/07/2024 23:37

It’s your body shape, width of pelvis etc
Im 60 and have never had thigh rub and I’ve been every size from 6 up to 22 over my adult life

ShyTed · 31/07/2024 23:44

I wear the snag chub rub shorts I think they are great and don’t find them sweaty at all. I literally couldn’t wear a dress in the heat without them.
PS I always have chub rub no matter what size I am - currently a 12 but also had the issue as a size 8/10. It’s just my shape.

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 01/08/2024 00:01

WishIMite · 31/07/2024 15:41

It's largely to do with shape. Google "pronation with internal rotation of knee" and you'll see - if your hips rotate inwards then it's FIERY THIGHS time.

My whole family has this, male and female, and survives with chub rub shorts.

I googled this and now I understand why I have less problems than I used to. I even tested out walking in my old way, and bingo, rubbing!

I had no idea that partially resolving my habitual flatfootedness had reaped such benefits!

Yellowcakestand · 01/08/2024 00:15

Talc, cotton shorts underneath or stick deodorant.
