To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

Do you shave your thighs? I've never had this issue but I have quite hairy legs so maybe it adds a layer of protection 😅

I don't have any hairs where my thighs rub. Perhaps I've rubbed them off! 😂

Anti-chafe shorts are also helpful when wearing a floaty dress on a windy day!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 31/07/2024 17:06

I was asking my dermatologist about this last week, he said it’s much more common than you would think! I have eczema so I have to be very careful about what I put on my skin. He said moisturiser is best, not antiperspirant for sensitive skin like me. I still prefer to wear dresses if I can but I’m only irritated by it if eczema flares up.

Yes, it's to do with hip width. I'm almost underweight but don't have hips so my athletic thighs still touch. I don't think I was even in the queue when they handed out hip bones......

And thigh muscles. I have wide-ish hips but ginormous thigh muscles. Even when I have relatively little body fat the muscles make them meet.

RampantIvy · 31/07/2024 17:11

I think some people have wider hips and so thighs don't meet in the middle

That pretty much describes me. I'm a 12/14 and don't have slim thighs but they don't rub.

PenelopeHofstadter · 31/07/2024 17:17

It's definitely down to body shape. I'm a size 8-10 and have just been on holiday where we did a lot of walking. I wore shorts most days and my thighs rubbed loads. I used antiperspirant roll on to stop it.

I don't think I'd have a thigh gap ever even if I weighed about 3 stone 😂

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 31/07/2024 17:19

Never had a problem with this. Not sure why as I don’t exactly have slender thighs lol.

tuttuttutt · 31/07/2024 17:23

Lots of chub rub shorts aren't too thick or hot.

Turquoisesea · 31/07/2024 17:24

I’ve had this for the first time ever on holiday this year. I’ve put weight on and I’m a size 14 on the bottom half and pear shaped. It was 32 degrees every day and I walked a lot and got bad chubb rub which I have never had before. Going to try and lose some weight as I found it so unpleasant and never suffered from it before.

GiveMeThePurpleOne · 31/07/2024 17:26

I've had this issue as a child and even when I was 9st which was a slender weight for me.
I've always been pear shaped and have legs that sort of lean inwards so my thighs are always touching. Blush
Only thing that ever worked for me was cycling shorts or underwear shorts that you wear under dresses, couldn't apply anti chafe stuff as my thighs are literally glued together so it just wore off quickly.
I had to say goodbye to short dresses or only wear them if I know I'm not walking very... Sorry not really a solution.

BlueFlint · 31/07/2024 17:30

I've always found this quite interesting! I'm decidedly chubby (just about overweight according to BMI) and my thighs have never rubbed. I will however be dripping sweat down my back in a t-shirt on a hot day, yuck. I wonder if it's more related to variation in people's walking gait??

WittyFatball · 31/07/2024 18:02

Beautiful3 · 31/07/2024 15:47

Because as I've already explained upthread, I had bad thigh rub until I lost 3 stone. Losing weight actually works!!!

I think I would die if I lost 3 stone. I'd rather keep the chub rub.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 31/07/2024 18:02

I’m an 8 and fit, but very curvy and have always had this (even when I was younger and thinner).I’m sure someone has already posted it but I wear Wirapa long-leg cotton knickers in bright colours if I wear dresses: no sweatier than normal undies and no chafing.

probably due to upset around some of their products being NSFW . These products are aimed at a specific community and I personally have no issue with consenting participants indulging in any kink they choose. It definitely wouldn’t stop me supporting an ethical, body positive, British based company that makes good quality items in favour of fast fashion from many of the other suggested retailers on this thread.

I just had to google NSFW and it said "not safe for work", am I missing something?!

Oldraver · 31/07/2024 18:13

I'm size 16 #and lucky not to get chub rub but I do wear Step One trunks

They come longer down your legs and are made from less sweaty material

A cool dress will touch your shoulders but just kind of waft over the rest of you. I always wear mine mid calf. Trousers and shorts have waistbands etc, much less comfortable if it's really hot.

LoneHydrangea · 31/07/2024 15:31

I’m wearing a dress today. Size 12. No knickers.

My thighs don’t rub together which is more luck than slenderness.

This has made me laugh thanks! 😆😆For solidarity I'm braless in a vest & shorts, the heat is a scourge but I love it

I probably would get chub rub (size 8 just for that asshole who says it's weight related!) but I never wear dresses & if I'm in shorts I don't tend to be out walking for any length of time

MynameisML · 31/07/2024 18:40

I’ve found that unless I’m skinny (not currently) nothing feels comfortable. Dresses feel to exposing of flab, shorts get sweaty. I don’t know the answer!

How about short quite loose shorts? Sort of one third down the thigh with a wide leg? I find them very vented!

Southwest12 · 31/07/2024 18:45

The Primark seamfree chib rub shorts are lovely, i think they are much nicer than the Snag ones

Ceebs85 · 31/07/2024 19:59

I'm a size 22 with fat thighs that rub. I'm definitely cooler in a dress and chub rub shorts than I am in any kind of trousers/shorts

Garlickest · 31/07/2024 20:06

Does lots of walking lessen chub rub?

No expertise on this, @FlipFlops4Me, but it must do - your thighs will be more toned, won't they?

AmelysTree · 31/07/2024 20:07

I had that issue as a size 16. Thin cycling shorts from Primark were a saviour for summer. Then as part of my New Year’s resolutions, I stopped eating junk, have got down to a size 10 and no more thigh rub. Much happier this summer compared to last!! So for me, the answer was to ditch my self-induced crisp and chocolate loving lardy arse 😂

Snag sell lingerie and have at times included what some people would consider more x-rated items. A few people were offended by the items they were advertising a few months ago (which were not part of the main collection) under their ‘spicy snag’ range as I think they included messaging they found offensive. I’ve just checked and currently they aren’t advertising those particular items, just tamer things like suspenders etc. For some people this was enough to boycott the company entirely.

AhBiscuits · 31/07/2024 20:09

My thighs don't rub together. They did when I was heavier and roll on deodorant fixed the issue and lasts all day.

Movinghouseatlast · 31/07/2024 13:12

Try the Big Bloomers chub rub shorts. I've worn them in very high heat under beach dresses and you don't know you're wearing them.

The Snag ones are just awful, they are cut off tights!

I hated the Snag ones. Like you say they are just cut off tights and I found them sweaty. They were also way too long for me!
