To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

inthekiddle · 31/07/2024 12:49

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

And if someone asks a question which doesn’t apply to you do you think it’s better to:

  1. shrug your shoulders and move on
  2. fat shame them while smugly proclaiming it’s not a problem you have

Because if you think Option 2 makes you anything other than a dickhead, you have some soul searching to do.

If honest answers aren’t what OP wanted (having directed her question to all women) then sure, we’re all secretly in discomfort and hate wearing dresses.

YouJustDoYou · 31/07/2024 15:51

I smother my inner thighs with castor oil, which seems to help.

Because as I've already explained upthread, I had bad thigh rub until I lost 3 stone. Losing weight actually works!!!

For. Some. People.
Some people get it even when very slim.
And in any case it’s not helpful advice for someone who is having the problem TODAY.

allows a breeze stops thigh rub

When I was really over weight, I had this problem. Now I'm smaller as don't have this problem anymore. If you lost a stone would it improve?

When I was slim I had chub rub. Now that I'm not slim I don't have chub rub.

Explain that.

IlCommissarioMontalbano · 31/07/2024 15:58

Dove solid deodorant works a treat for me, has to be re-applied regularly though. Cycle shorts work well too, cheap Primark ones have been OK for me and I'm a size 18/20. I live in dresses practically all year, just with tights/leggings in Winter!

Frith2013 · 31/07/2024 16:00

My thighs and knees rubbed until I got insoles for my shoes!

Comedycook · 31/07/2024 16:03

Whilst I think being overweight may be a contributory factor, it's definitely not the whole story. I think a lot depends on how you carry your weight, your overall shape, your gait and your skin.

Similar! Had it as a 14 sized teen and up to a size 20.

When I was a small 16 last year it went. I’m a large 16 and it’s back! Bah!

JaneEyreBedHair · 31/07/2024 16:05

Haven’t RTFT but try applying a bit of coconut oil in inner thighs where rub occurs.

Timeturnerplease · 31/07/2024 16:06

When I was a size 8 as a teenager I still got sore inner thighs because I have narrow hips and (had) muscular thighs from years of horse riding. I feel your pain OP; shorts have the annoying issue of being two items of clothing to increase heat, but then dresses even with light chub shorts are the same.

I’ve just lost 2.5 stone and the only body measurement that hasn’t changed is my upper thighs. My sister is a size 20 and doesn’t get chub rub at all, thanks to her lovely wide hips and hourglass figure.

Being a woman is rubbish sometimes.

Maddy70 · 31/07/2024 16:08

Dresses are floaty and cool

Put stick deo on your chub rub. Works wonders

blondiepigtails · 31/07/2024 16:09

Lanacane anti chafing gel for me. I do ultra walks and many recommend Asda liquid baby talc.

Maryward · 31/07/2024 16:09

I had it really bad on holiday couple of years ago as I was walking all day in the heat in Venice. It was so sore! I always use bepanthen ointment now from the baby aisle supermarket. You only need to smear a little on your upper thighs and it’s never happened again. You can get a small tube that fits in your bag as well, they sell at airport. Supposed to be great for your face on long haul flights too !

If honest answers aren’t what OP wanted (having directed her question to all women) then sure, we’re all secretly in discomfort and hate wearing dresses.

The OP actually asked how women wore dresses because of chaffage.

I replied its not an issue for me. Why? Because the way the OP framed it, it sounds like she thinks ALL women have the problem which just isn't the case.

It had to be an issue with shape or size otherwise all women would have it.

I've never thought of it being a particular problem because of the historical nature of women wearing dresses either. Its just not something with widespread comments on that you need to learn to deal with. And yes we are bigger and we walk less than any other previous generation so yes, perhaps we should reflect on this - it need not necessarily be to do with weight but it could be to do with tone and the amount of time we spend at desk jobs or in the car compared with previous generations who would have spent considerably more time walking or just on their feet.

It was a blunt response but not one which was all about fat shaming. What's telling to me is the replies and the level of vitrol thats produced. It says more about others than it does about me...

The ASSUMPTION that it was a comment attacking rather than being honest about a problem is fascinating. If we aren't honest about issues then we can't solve them...

Is it the heat making you sound so cross?
This is a discussion forum.
We can all have different opinions. And there are plenty other posters saying what I did.

Edited

Some opinions are wrong, though.

leopardski · 31/07/2024 16:14

OP I haven’t read it all but if no one else has recommended Snag tights chub run shorts take a look! They’re so light and have temp control. Saw me through a very hot week in Spain recently!

Octavia64 · 31/07/2024 12:58

It's not whether you are fat or not it's your shape.

I'm a size 18 and have never had this.

I agree.

I have wide hips and not particularly big thighs. My weight is in my boobs, bottom and tummy. I certainly couldn't walk around braless as I would get sore in the heat.

TheUnknownsMum · 31/07/2024 15:02

OP has asked “how women wear dresses in this heat”. The answer is because most women don’t suffer from the issue OP describes.

Well … it would seem a huge amount of them use tricks to cope.

Negangirlxx · 31/07/2024 16:18

I’m overweight, and 6.5 months pregnant, and love wearing dresses in this weather. I just put some Megababe Thigh Rescue on, and I’m fine. Literally the best thing I’ve ever purchased!

I wear bikeshorts underneath. Never felt particularly sweaty because of them.

Calliopespa · 31/07/2024 13:28

Wouldn’t you leave a trail of white powder from your floof area? That might look odd …

Can't possibly have yer foof looking like it's been snorting cocaine!

I think I got shorts from Simply Be - they work, but I'm just not a big dress person I guess as I don't wear them much but it means I have the option.

LinzyB · 31/07/2024 16:22

I'm a UK size 18-20 and find dresses much cooler in the heat than anything else.Im also quite tall at 5ft8 and a lot of my summer dresses come just above my knees or just on my knees.I bought several pairs of cycling shorts from Primark in different colours.Only £3 per pair and they are ideal for wearing under dresses.Very cool and comfy and don't make me sweaty.Plus they prevent thigh rub.

Exactly! And as others have pointed out repeatedly it’s a shape based thing not weight based. I’ve known women at a size 8 who complain about this and at a size 20 who have never experienced it!
