To wonder how women wear dresses in the heat

Please can someone help! How on earth are most people wafting about in dresses in the heat?

I'm a U.K. 12 and if I wear dresses in the summer with normal pants my thighs rub together so badly, it's impossible to walk more than 5 minutes!

I have chub rub pants which are great and I put up with how sweaty they make me, but they are absolutely not suitable for a holiday where I'm wearing little beach dresses etc and it's very hot.

I've tried thigh gel in the past and found it makes no difference, it rubs off right away.

Is this just me? I'm slightly overweight but not a lot and find this happens even when I'm slimmer.

Chunky thigh girl here... (not read everything so sorry if this has alredy been said) I save up all my old 80den tights from the winter with holes/ladders and cut them down to cycle short length the role (not tried the chub rub shorts but imagin they are simmilar) and if I'm wearing a short skirt I can just fold them up on themselves ovously a bit Walmer but not too bad

Goatinthegarden · 31/07/2024 15:32

I have thick thighs from cycling that do touch, but I don’t get any rubbing. I properly love the heat, so maybe it has something to do with that? DH suffers from all sorts of chaffing in the heat, despite being quite slim. He uses a cream designed for cyclists called ‘chamois cream’. There are lots of different brands of the stuff, but it’s a sort of mix of sudocreme and Vaseline type ingredients - slippery and antibacterial. He swears by it.

I feel that adding a pair of cycling shorts into the mix would make things worse. I like to wear as little as possible in the heat.

Instead of. Makes all the difference.

Over. They are designed to keep you cool. I couldn’t possibly wear them without pants under. Hideously uncomfortable.

Citrusandginger · 31/07/2024 15:35

Dresses are cooler. And you don't need shorts - seriously what canny influencer managed to convince anyone to wear another layer when it's melting hot? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?

Roll on deodorant does the job. You're welcome.

ginasevern · 31/07/2024 15:36

I've ranged from a size 8 to a 12/14 and I've never had this problem. It must be to do with shape I guess or maybe skin type or the amount someone perspires? I live in dresses in the hot weather. There's nothing cooler than a floaty cotton dress with the air circulating around your nether regions. They are also a one hit garment. No mixing and matching, layering or faffing. If they're midi length I don't wear pants either. Just one pretty dress and a pair of sandals and you're equally ready for a boozy BBQ or the Royal Garden party. No fuss!

IDontHateRainbows · 31/07/2024 15:38

Chub shorts are your friend.

I wear jockey slimshorts with all manner of summer clothing even loose trousers. Couldn't be without em.

Doesn't work for me.

Ponderingwindow · 31/07/2024 15:39

Some of us need chaffing shorts. I remember one very sweaty holiday where I was I had blisters all over my thighs from one day of walking. people should not shame those of us who need a solution.

If your thighs rub and chafe, that's telling you something.

Kindly, as you did ask, if you can't wear something like a dress, you need to lose weight.

My thighs rubbed together when I was a size 8. It’s a shape thing, not a weight thing.

And even if it was a weight thing - what exactly is it about fat people being comfortable in hot weather that you find so personally upsetting?

Love this.

I will say that I have a very private garden though the frock covers me down to my ankles, it's just the bit of breeze that I enjoy!

WishIMite · 31/07/2024 15:41

It's largely to do with shape. Google "pronation with internal rotation of knee" and you'll see - if your hips rotate inwards then it's FIERY THIGHS time.

My whole family has this, male and female, and survives with chub rub shorts.

bonzaitree · 31/07/2024 15:42

Buy some cycle shorts from Primark for like £2. Job done.

Chipsahoy · 31/07/2024 15:42

Dresses are lovely and cool if it’s the right material but I don’t have chub rub. That’s not to boast just to answer your question, I assume those who wear dresses either don’t struggle with chub rub or they are wearing shorts under.
I believe you can also buy deodorant style items that stop the rub too.

As evidenced by the rest of the thread, losing weight won't necessarily resolve the issue. Telling a woman to lose a stone is both rude and simplistic. Beautiful is as beautiful does, 3.

It's not rude at all. It's the truth. Sensitive people are the ones who develop type 2 diabetes and don't know why?! 🙄

FrangipaniBlue · 31/07/2024 15:44

What shoes are you wearing @inthekiddle ?

I find heels, even a low one, makes my thighs rub more. If I wear flat shoes I barely get it.......

Have you even read the thread?

Lots of women of normal weight have this problem. It's about body shape, gait, skin.

Beautiful3 · 31/07/2024 15:46

Seaglassandchampagne · 31/07/2024 15:29

And if someone asks a question which doesn’t apply to you do you think it’s better to:

  1. shrug your shoulders and move on
  2. fat shame them while smugly proclaiming it’s not a problem you have

Because if you think Option 2 makes you anything other than a dickhead, you have some soul searching to do.

Why? I was over weight and experienced bad thigh rub. When I lost some weight, it stopped. Why would it make someone a dickhead?! It's practical advice. Being overly sensitive isn't going to serve you well.

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 31/07/2024 15:46

I always wear summer dresses and I e never had this

SarahLHs · 31/07/2024 15:46

If I'm going to be walking at all I wear the Snagtights shorts under dresses. They're really lightweight so I don't even notice them. There's cheaper versions on Amazon but I haven't found them anywhere near as good.

Because as I've already explained upthread, I had bad thigh rub until I lost 3 stone. Losing weight actually works!!!

I hate the feeling of my skin rubbing, so creams etc wont be helpful for me.

Deodrant on the inner thighs on the rub zone. Mitcham roll on works best for me.

This. I’ve always had chub rub and this changed my life!

My thighs rubbed as a size 10, 5ft 8 teen. It is body shape. You can be obese and have skinny legs. We all carry weight differently.

I don't have three stone to lose. Even at my thinnest (size 6, under 8 stone) I had chub rub.
