Controlling for being angry at DH using oven

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:32

Dh likes to eat healthily which means he never fries any food. Even the 1 cal spray is not acceptable. Fine.

But DH knows I’m very funny about the heat. Hate it and do very well to keep a cool house. I’m the person who goes around closing curtains, opening windows at the optimal time to keep things cool.

Just got off a work call to a sauna downstairs. DH has made himself a fry up (chicken sausages, egg, mushrooms, tomatoes). The kitchen is reading 26c - it was 22.5c when I looked at around 12 pm.

I told dh that this was really selfish behaviour. And now I’ve been called controlling.

@somanynamesbynow Houses in Spain and Australia (per earlier posters) are designed for their climates

That's not really a true blanket statement for Australia for the States and areas that were settled and populated earlier, which is where the majority of people live. While it’s true for a lot of housing QLD and NT (they seemed to have sense from the get go), for the rest of us housing was/is completely unsuited to our climate with houses with zero insulation that are freezing in winter and boiling in Summer. Yes, most are now fitted with air con to cater to summer/winter (with the sky high electric bills to match) but it would be rare for anyone to put the air con on at 26 in a house with trapped heat, not designed for any cross-flow of ventilation etc, because it’s just not that hot.

However, not sure when, I’m thinking early 90’s (??) most States/Territories implemented building codes so that we wouldn’t continue with unsuitable housing design/builds unfit for climate. Any from that time onwards have been designed/built with climate in mind per mandatory requirements and I think they are what you are talking about (unless you are talking about the old QLD’er style which predated these modern requirements but were the original builds in areas up north with much sparser population densities). The reality though is that most of the population in the majority of States in established housing are still in the ‘older’ homes and it’s likely to be two generations on before we see most of these replaced with suitable new builds.

Nothanks17 · 01/08/2024 08:12

You are being unreasonable. He should be able to cook and eat how and when he wants, he isn't in prison. Maybe make a suggestion to mitigate the heat output in future since it has been so hot this week. Cool mats for the dogs. It has been super hot but you can't control how someone cooks their food, I was expecting it to read annoyed he used an oven that's broken or something.

We all get a little peeved sometimes at things that we think is insane/not right, especially when it's hot, so don't best yourself up about the comments to follow from the post 😅 Just apologise if you've already had a go!

Why would you pull down perfectly ok houses? UK. Houses are built for the climate. E.g. if you go to the far north, to the Shetlands and Orkneys, which experience winds of 200 mph on occasion, houses are low built with shallow pitches to the roofs. In the south, warm and with equable climate, houses used to be built to keep heat in during winter and cold in during summer, e.g. thick walls, or overhanging roofs. Why were these methods not exported to the New World?

HowardTJMoon · 01/08/2024 10:29

Building design isn't just influenced by climate but by available materials and economics. Eg, in the US most houses are built of timber rather than brick. Timber is cheap and abundant in the US whereas here in the UK we chopped down most of our trees centuries ago so we use brick instead.

The complaint today will be that's it's raining and that will cause other issues. 🙄

ImplacableDiscernment · 01/08/2024 10:33

I hate being too hot, once I overheat, it takes me a long time to cool down and I feel unwell. My OH is cold all of the time.

I would sleep with the windows open and the fan on all year around. I don't because my OH could not sleep in those conditions. We compromise, use common sense and think of other people. Unlike the Ops DH who sounds selfish and irritating.

DH has had a shower and added to the moisture in the atmosphere, the thoughtless BASTARD! I'm running around after my quadruple-coated dogs with hairdryers!

LTB @PrimitivePerson

No reasonable person wouldn’t want to sit and swelter in their own sweat and dirt.

Showers aren’t for summer!

Don't you mean the OP?

She could have easily kept the dogs out of the kitchen and shut the door.

What a lot of fuss about nothing.

ChiefEverythingOfficer · 01/08/2024 11:44

Your dogs will survive. Where I live (not UK) we set our AC in summer at 26 degs to COOL the house. Dog and cat are still alive to tell the tale.

It doesn't dip below 23 degs even in the middle of the night for 5 months.

Said kindly - get a grip.

Is this real???

Fluffytoebeanz · 01/08/2024 15:13

I'm an Aussie by birth and a Brit by upbringing. I have family in Qld, WA and lived in Sydney. In the winter I was fecking freezing living in apartments that were damp, no insulation or heating. That was Sydney. Albany was even worse. When my dad built his house he built it with insulation and heating for the winter and to be cool in the summer using environmentally friendly building techniques and solar/wind as he didn't have electricity where he was.

I like the heat, hate being cold. But I don't like it over 30, houses here are not designed for it and it's very humid. But would use the oven if necessary. Mostly I use the air fryer though

Hé doesn’t sound selfish at all. It’s HIS home and if he wants to cook in it then he should be able to. The OP sounds unstable

We used specifically oak for ships, so it was less available for building. But it does depend on area. For example Norfolk especially built wooden houses with a specific cladding of overlapping wood - clinker built like a ship. Shetland uses stone because there are hardly any trees.

It's not a cooker, it's a RANGE!
