Controlling for being angry at DH using oven

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:32

Dh likes to eat healthily which means he never fries any food. Even the 1 cal spray is not acceptable. Fine.

But DH knows I’m very funny about the heat. Hate it and do very well to keep a cool house. I’m the person who goes around closing curtains, opening windows at the optimal time to keep things cool.

Just got off a work call to a sauna downstairs. DH has made himself a fry up (chicken sausages, egg, mushrooms, tomatoes). The kitchen is reading 26c - it was 22.5c when I looked at around 12 pm.

I told dh that this was really selfish behaviour. And now I’ve been called controlling.

AIBU?

Absolutely is. I might be paraphrasing for effect, but not much!

Not sure if you're allowed to drop links but I guess if not I'll get deleted. Forgiveness rather than permission. A bit like this OP's husband with his chicken bangers!

Thanks for the linking! Off to read it now 👀

Think I'll make a nice slow cooked venison stew.

About 14 hours in the oven should do it.

ImplacableDiscernment · 30/07/2024 23:09

We don't use the oven when it is hot. We use the air fryer if we need to cook or heat something up.

ImplacableDiscernment · 30/07/2024 23:13

YANBU, he is selfish.

What did your DH do to help cool the house/dogs down?

@ImplacableDiscernment

he doesn’t need to do anything.

The kitchen is now 26c according to hive. I checked at around 12 pm and it was nowhere near that.

I just went and touched range and it is scolding to the touch still. The kitchen was lovely and cool for the dogs and now it is the hottest room in the house.

No, what the range is doing is 'scalding'.

What you're doing is 'scolding'.

Well the dogs will use the cooling mats if they need to cool down, smothering them in frozen towels will only make them hotter

And the house isn't exactly a steaming hot house at 26oC 🤣

Zwicky · 30/07/2024 23:57

It is bananas for the OP to have to buy an air conditioner costing hundreds of pounds - and which is bad for the environment - so that her partner can just do what he wants

She doesn’t have to buy an air conditioner costing hundreds of pounds so her partner can just do what he wants. She has to buy an air conditioner, which she could get for under £200, because she can’t cope in her own house at 22.5C and she lives in a country, as do dozens of people around the world, where there are days when the temperature is higher than that. She’s freezing towels at 22.5C. She has eaten a salad - which is a firm red line for me. She has instigated a row with her husband because if a temperature rise of 3.5C during the afternoon - when the temperature naturally rises. Her need for air con couldn’t have less to do with her DH just doing what he wants. I doubt he wants any part of this at all.

Her partner is making his own lunch. It falls under “just doing what he wants” but it’s not actually unreasonable. I eat as much as 3 times a day because I want to.

She likely won’t mind the “hundreds” of pounds as her freezer, dogs (x2) and range cooker will all have cost more and are all worse for the environment.

And pre the air fryer fad, what did you do then?

Perfect summary.

😆 good point!

HucklefinBerry · 31/07/2024 03:47

OP you are weirdly focused on the temperature of your house.
Yes it's unpleasantly warm atm but seriously you are being way too fixated.

The whole house won't be 26degrees now.

Just stay out of the kitchen. You could have just asked him nicely to try to refrain from using the oven on extra hot days but you can't go around dictating

Happilyobtuse · 31/07/2024 03:49

You are totally insane! Your poor DH, let the man eat his meals! You need to calm down, if any one is being selfish it is you and not him. The dogs will be fine.

The temperature is only in the 20’s, I am on holiday abroad and the temperature here is always in the 20-30’s and in some parts of this country even the 40’s. The dogs all do fine, we have two black labs. They will find the coolest spot and lie down on the cold tiles. Put a fan on for them if you think it is unbearably hot and open out the windows for cross ventilation.

montysma1 · 31/07/2024 04:13

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:50

My poor dogs have thick, long coats that cannot be shaved. Double coated.

So has mine and he doesn't need frozen towels or paddling pools.

Summerbay23 · 31/07/2024 07:04

YABU and controlling. The dogs will be fine and find some shade or a cooler room if they are too hot (we have a double coated dog too). It’s not like it’s over 30 degrees.

catin8oots · 31/07/2024 07:42

Double coated dogs actually stay very cool due to their double coat

jannier · 31/07/2024 07:52

somanynamesbynow · 30/07/2024 21:09

I send 'tend'. Women can of course behave badly and selfishly, and men can behave wonderfully.

All he had to do was wait for a cooler day. I gather it's been a cool summer in England this year.

Why should he? Do you not eat hot food in the summer

socks1107 · 31/07/2024 07:58

Yabu. It's hot whatever you do this week and he wanted a meal.
It is controlling to tell him he can't use the oven in his own home

Another2Cats · 31/07/2024 08:39

MagneticSquirrel · 30/07/2024 13:42

It’s far too hot too open the windows if it’s 22C indoors, windows open only work when it’s cooler outside than inside.

If it’s 28C outdoors and now 26C indoors due to oven being on there is nothing anyone can do now, house is stuck at that temperature until it cools overnight. Fans just blow air around and opening windows will make it worse.

Using the oven during the middle of the day when it’s forecast to be 30C outside is unacceptable. Trying to keep a house cool
for self and pets is not controlling - it’s sensible!

"Using the oven during the middle of the day when it’s forecast to be 30C outside is unacceptable."

I'm sorry, but what? OK, so it only got to 28 where we live, but I was certainly baking and cooking on Sunday.

Why is that a problem? (serious question by the way)

willWillSmithsmith · 31/07/2024 08:40

ImplacableDiscernment · 30/07/2024 23:13

YANBU, he is selfish.

What did your DH do to help cool the house/dogs down?

You think cooking a fry up is going to heat up a house?

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/07/2024 08:42

I made a chicken pilaf and ironed three linen dresses in our teeny tiny kitchen yesterday evening, then did some ashtanga yoga. I got a bit sweaty so had a tepid shower afterwards. I did not die of the heat.

Honestly the hysteria in this country over perfectly resonable summer temperatures is hilarious.

willWillSmithsmith · 31/07/2024 08:42

Bluebirdover · 31/07/2024 01:37

And pre the air fryer fad, what did you do then?

Off topic I know but I just want to say air fryers are not a fad. I couldn’t be without one now. 😁

Bluebirdover · 31/07/2024 08:46

@willWillSmithsmith totally off topic and irrelevant!

What did that poster do before air fryer's?

willWillSmithsmith · 31/07/2024 08:47

Grammarnut · 30/07/2024 21:55

Turns out it was done in the oven, which is what the hoohah is about. Just because it is hot one does not stop using the oven. What if I want to bake a birthday cake, have baked potatoes and salad? OP is daft. DH should leave - and take the dogs.

Oh heck I’m doing baked potatoes today for lunch, it’s very warm outside already and I’ve got a dog. I am a very bad and selfish person 🙁

lalalapland · 31/07/2024 08:50

Sorry everyone... we had a barbecue at home last night, so I do apologise to everyone in the south east for making the air so hot!
