toddler eaten contents of herb rack - I think this is harmless?

No spices have been eaten, which would be a bit different. They have eaten rosemary, thyme and sage - I don't think there is anything to worry about there, is there? Not my toddler! Not my house!

You could have googled this in half the thyme

You need to ring 111 and they can advise. I have used this service before to ask about a ‘potential’ poison and they gave really good advice. I really think going to A&E is OTT!

lazzapazza · 28/07/2024 18:01

You have two routes to sending whatsapp messages

  1. Wifi connection through your home broadband. This can be also be used for internet ie web browsing.

  2. Mobile phone data. This can also be used for internet ie web browsing.

Just because somebody has access to web browsing does not mean that they are a member of any online forums.

Now can we stop this bloody stupid debate.

SlashBeef · 28/07/2024 18:01

A&E seriously?

What does the mother of the actual toddler think? Not worried enough to be posting on here it seems

Not everyone turns to immediately to a bunch of complete strangers on the internet, who have no real knowledge of the subject in hand when they have a problem or concerns.

Willmafrockfit · 28/07/2024 18:01

i managed to ring A & E when my toddler ate half a paracetamol 27 years ago!
they asked a doctor who concluded it was the equivalent of a spoon of calpol
and nothing to worry about.

i think sage is worrying as it should be avoided when pregnant, as far as i can remember

VeryHappyBunny · 28/07/2024 18:02

The whole point of jars of dried herbs in the kitchen is that you put them in or on food to eat. They are food grade therefore non-toxic. It is unlikely said toddler consumed a whole jar of each as they are dry and difficult to swallow in large quantities. It would have been different if it had been the essential oils.

If these are the only herbs it is a bit of a rubbish herb rack, also how did a toddler reach them, its not the sort of thing you have that low down?

Kids eat much worse things in the garden, some of which are poisonous but they are still okay so unless this one has a weird allergy to any of these herbs it will be fine.

It's a good job you didn't ask BoJo or you would have been told "oven ready".

Which poison hotline?

do you have the number? Might be useful for o/p or for future reference.

Cannot remember, it was nearly 2 years ago. He ate something from when we moved house. I spoke to a woman and she was so helpful. I cannot recall the number whatsoever, it was sent to me by a friend, you’d have to Google for it.

But you can quit trying to make out that we’re inventing it, I’ve used the damned thing.

Megifer · 28/07/2024 18:03

There isn't a poison / toxin hotline in the UK btw

LabradorPacMan · 28/07/2024 18:04

Call 111.

They will be able to access ToxBase and advise.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 28/07/2024 18:04

Bit of a brutal pile on!

He'll be fine, the quantities in the little jars isn't enough to be harmful of any of these. Certain herbs and spices in large quantities can be though so of course its not the ridiculous question people have made out. A jar of ground cinnamon could be enough for hallucinogenic effects in a toddler for example.

no you dont! anyway, as far as she can tell on her phone, it is ok, but its hard to look these things up on your phone. I have googled on my lap top and cant see anything concerning

You do. I presume she has mobile data, which is internet.

Isittimeformynapyet · 28/07/2024 18:06

Waffle78 · 28/07/2024 17:58

How would you know? Were you there? My son used to get into the hot chocolate when I left the room for a couple of minutes to go for a wee. Kids are animals they get into everything. Why would they make it up?

Sure, he might have had chocolate powder in his mouth, but swallowing multiple jars wouldn't be possible.

As for "how I know", that would be a combination of general knowledge and experience, and using those to guage the probability of a toddler ingesting an amount of dried herbs.

I don't think pregnancy is going to be much of a concern here.

Yes, you do.

You don’t get charged per WhatsApp message, do you?

The whole point of downloading WhatsApp is that it uses wifi instead of being sent via individual SMS message through your normal phone carrier (which costs money).

Nope. Googled and can’t find it. It only refers you to 111 in a poisoning emergency.

I dont know why all these posts! I certainly use whatsapp all the time without internet. In fact I turn off the internet on my phone to use it at work, as it doesn't work very well on the work internet.

Are you confusing internet and Wi-Fi, op?? You definitely need the internet to use WhatsApp. Whether it’s Wi-Fi or your mobile data. If she can use her mobile data to use WhatsApp then she can Google. I know it’s missing the point of the thread but I just don’t see why you are saying she can use whatsapp but not Google…

There is no “poisons hotline” available to non medical staff in the uk.

Yes you do, you either need to be connected to WiFi or data I order to use WhatsApp.

Blibbleflibble · 28/07/2024 18:15

Fucking hell people on here are a fucking nightmare sometimes.

Obvs OP got mixed up about wifi and internet. She's posted on here because she's fairly sure dried herbs aren't poisonous so probably doesn't want to bother 111 and get a little bit of encouragement that there's nothing to worry about or indeed ring 111. Now people have wound her up so fucking much she might go to a&e. Slow clap.

Also people saying a toddler wouldn't eat that, my toddler used to eat bloody sand straight out of his sand pit or at the beach by the bloody handful, it is entirely possible.

Mumsnet can really be the fucking worst sometimes.

I have no idea of the number! Maybe it was the NPIS, maybe it wasn’t British, but I spoke to someone!! You can ‘nope’ all you want, I don’t care you believe me, I spoke to someone from a poison hotline and she reassured me that my child hadn’t eaten enough of the particular substance (which I’m not going to say as it’s outing as my friends all know about it) for it to cause any dangerous reaction, just diarrhoea.

SerafinasGoose · 28/07/2024 18:16

Well I, for one, have learned a few things from this thread that I probably shoudl have known previously and didn't (now giving a suspicious side-eye to the overflowing pots of thyme, rosemary, chives, sage and mint currently flourishing in my back garden)!

OP if you're worried then the sensible thing to do is always to seek advice (111 first though, rather than A&E). From what I can glean, unless the quantities ingested are huge (in small jars it's doubtful that's the case) or are consumed in large quantities over long periods they're unlikely to have done any harm.

Satisfy yourself by all means - if as a parent any doubt remained I would do the same thing.

Toddlers are peculiar creatures. My brother at that age used to dip stones in sand on the beach then shove them into his mouth and eat the sand! What on earth possesses them I will never know ...

Thepartnersdesk · 28/07/2024 18:17

I really can't see he'd have eaten enough to be harmful. It's really difficult to eat dried herbs. They'll be embedded in a rug or somewhere.

I don't know why you are getting such a hard time about what's app. My son has an old phone with a pay as you go SIM which has never had any credit added. When we went camping (middle of no where and definitely no WiFi) he managed to message his granny on WhatsApp and we were all stumped as to how.
