Friend had a go at me over a can of Diet Coke

Last Saturday friend had a few people around, she lives in the country so taxi/uber is impossible so all those drinking stayed over.

In the morning there was still some stuff out from the night before, including cans of Diet Coke, I opened one and had a sip, put it down not really thinking and said my goodbyes, my friend said “aren’t you taking that with you?” I responded “no I’m good thanks” and she retorted “what I’m absolute waste” - awkward silence, I grabbed the can, mumbled sorry and left.

Shes now messaged me to apologised. I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

It’s like a spoilt pre-teen wrote this post. Thank god my friends have better manners.

Please don't say this, pigs are really intelligent and better behaved.

You appear to have missed the symbolism in Animal Farm. Pigs are scum, and they should be treated as scum.

Let's clarify a few things for you @coldayscientist because I'm not sure you're fully grasping what happened.

  1. Your friend didn't, I'll repeat that, didn't 'have a go at you over a can of coke'. What they did do was point out that you were being very wasteful to open a can and only take a small portion of the drink in the can (as there is no closure mechanism on a can like there would be on a bottle).
  2. You were, and I'll repeat that too, were being very wasteful in what you did before leaving.
  3. Why didn't you bring the can with you and dispose of it in the nearest recycling bin when you left the house? Why was it the responsibility of the host to continue to clean up after you when you could have easily removed you and the can out of the situation?
  4. You didn't bring a gift (bottle of wine/bunch of flowers/cake/anything) for the host? You don't have to meet your restrictive list of criteria in order to be polite and grateful to your host and you (and clearly as you point out, neither were your friends) polite in this respect to your host. Would it really have been too much of a stretch for you to do this?

I think I'll step away from this thread as I'm completely on your host's side on this and I really wouldn't have apologised to you, I'd be waiting for an apology!

Well said. The OP is literally I oblivious to her rude and disrespectful behaviour and continues with it in the comments. Imagine being that ignorant when it comes to manners

I have never read Animal Farm and so, in that respect, I too, am pig ignorant. There a loads of classics I have never read, hopefully I will soon have a bit more time and I can rectify this.

However, I still stand by what I say that they are intelligent animals and I rather like them.

SauvignonBlanche · 27/07/2024 19:06

I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

It sounds like she was annoyed that you behaved like one. 🙄

Pigs can eat anything that's in front of them.

Yep, this. I doubt a five year old would open a can of drink just to take one sip and then leave the rest.

My 5 year old knows to put things in the bin when he’s finished them too, not leave them on the side for someone else to clean up after him.

I know this. It is no coincidence that big crime groups like the Mafia had/have pig farms. When someone disappears without trace this is where they end up. There literally is no trace.

Sometimes the pig muck and slurry has been searched through looking for any traces of human bodies, pacemakers, metal implants and the like, but generally there is nothing to find. A pig's digestion is very efficient. But I do still like them.

Captainobvious35 · 28/07/2024 09:11

Haha OP you have embarrassed yourself with this thread. Just accept you’re an inconsiderate friend, instead of getting defensive and making rude comments to people that have answered your question. You sound like a petulant child.

VeryHappyBunny · 28/07/2024 13:20

This thread is another one where the OP puts forward their point/situation/etc and are surprised when 90+% of everyone else disagrees with them. They keep coming back trying to defend themselves and even more people disagree. They come on here to have their actions validated and it backfires, spectacularly.

Technonan · 28/07/2024 13:54

I think OP expected everyone to jump in going, 'Ridiculous, she was unreasonable etc etc.'

Now people are pointing out that the OP's behaviour was unreasobale and the friend was quite justified in being annoyed, the OP is having hissy fits.

Don't ask the question if you aren't prepared to accept the answer.

Actupfishy · 29/07/2024 21:55

Your friend was completely correct. You're really REALLY entitled.
