AIBU to be angry at DH over DS 8 on water slide?

Fleetwoodmax · 24/07/2024 18:07

On holiday with DH and DS 8. I had to come back from pool early as had to have a chat with someone re a job interview. DH supervising DS at pool on small water slide and water play area. They come home saying they had a brilliant time but DS hurt his head. Why? I asked. “Well, when I was coming out of the waterslide backwards, I fell and hit my head of bottom of pool” ( not deep! And a shortish slide) At this I was horrified. A) why was he going down a water slide on his back headfirst… ? Totally not allowed. Apparently I’m ‘boring’ for suggesting he should only go feet first and DH deserves a medal for all the supervision he’s done. FYI I am significantly bigger breadwinner and job interview important. AIBU?

In my experience that’s what dads do. Have fun with the kids whilst mum worries about the risk.

Wolfpa · 24/07/2024 18:11

These things happen, I think you need to cut your husband a little slack. I have no idea what you being the bigger earner has to do with it.

Anewuser · 24/07/2024 18:13

Well you chose him to be a father. You made the decision he is responsible enough to leave your child with him while you went off for your important meeting.

Surely, you understand about risk assessments?

Twistybranch · 24/07/2024 18:13

I really don’t see why you had to mention that you’re the breadwinner. You took a call, you don’t have to get into why.

It was an accident, clearly stupid. You’ve made your feelings known. Tell your son to not go down a slide backwards again because it’s dangerous. Go into detail of why it’s dangerous. Make sure if he does it again there is a consequence. It’s called parenting. End of drama

Sisterdeloris · 24/07/2024 18:14

Not ideal but assuming no serious damage, not knocked out etc?

frannygallops · 24/07/2024 18:14

These things happen. Presumably your DH was at the bottom waiting to sort him out when he banged his head

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 24/07/2024 18:14

It's really not that big a deal, kids do shit they're not supposed to all the time-as do adults, going backwards down a waterslide is fun. He bumped his head, he's fine.

SummerSummeySun · 24/07/2024 18:15

The breadwinner bit is a bit of a shitty comment

However 8yo kids like to take risks and be silly, kids learn from doing, he won't do that again will he...

Candlelights1 · 24/07/2024 18:15

Eh no actually.
Going down backwards is not allowed....for good reason.

Your husband is a fxxking idiot and I would be well pissed off.
Idiot.
Men like him give me 🤢can't safely look after a child for 5 minutes.🙄
I'm surprised it was allowed, I have seen children and parents pulled aside by life guards and warned about messing about like that.....with good reason.
It really is unsafe.

AFmammaG · 24/07/2024 18:17

So glad you clarified this, obviously in that case YANBU
Lets hope you also reminded your DH of that fact when you were criticising his parenting.

KrisAkabusi · 24/07/2024 18:17

FYI I am significantly bigger breadwinner and job interview important.

What on earth has that got to do with waterslides?

I voted YABU. Fathers and kids mess around. Minor (like this one) accidents will happen. It's part of being a parent and part of growing up.

TheSerenePinkOrca · 24/07/2024 18:17

@Fleetwoodmax being the main breadwinner makes you a better parent and more right to dictate parenting choices?!?!

They were having fun. He bumped his head. He's fine. Sh*t happens. That's what kids do!

nameynamenamenamename · 24/07/2024 18:17

I’m going to go against the flow and say I think your DH was being a complete and utter arse.

However that’s because I have a close friend who is paraplegic due to a water park accident, where he “hit his head” in a similar accident, but in hitting his head he also broke his neck.

OhshutupRoger · 24/07/2024 18:18

Unclench and let them have fun. You were prioritising work over spending time with your family so maybe you have some guilt there?

Sisterdeloris · 24/07/2024 18:18

Crikey why jump on the OP for mentioning breadwinner. That was just to try and stop all the "why weren't you supervising him instead of taking a work call" comments. So much for MN solidarity!

Quite! I too would be pissed off if my DH couldn’t manage to look after my child for 5 minutes without resulting in a completely preventable injury. My DH is not this stupid so perhaps that’s why my parenting standards are higher. None of this “oh, it’s just what dads do” bullshit in these parts.

@Wolfpa she's justifying the need to leave this incompetent idiot in charge if their child.

she shouldn't have to justify herself, but this is MN, she'll be told it's her fault for leaving her son🙄🙄

@Fleetwoodmax

'boring'. I'd wipe the floor with him, twice.

@Schoolhols no that's what IDIOTS do.

DADS look after their kids

crumblingschools · 24/07/2024 18:20

There’s mucking about and then there is being an absolute idiot letting your child do that. There are rules for a reason not for shits and giggles.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/07/2024 18:20

YANBU except for the breadwinner bit - no need to mention that as you’re on holiday so no one is winning any bread - you should be doing roughly equal supervision either way.

But yes it was dangerous. Ok if DS just maybe turned round and DH didn’t notice but HWBVU to call you boring.

Fleetwoodmax · 24/07/2024 18:20

Twistybranch · 24/07/2024 18:13

I mentioned it because my husband got annoyed that I left my son with him to take the call..

DisappearingGirl · 24/07/2024 18:21

I assume OP mentioned breadwinner so people weren't asking why she had to go and take a work call.

I'm on the fence, I think sometimes accidents do happen and there's a balance between parenting too closely or too hands off ... however entering the water badly in a shallow pool is dangerous so I would be annoyed about this. I wouldn't let it spoil your holiday though, as long as DH and DS both now understand why it was a silly idea.

@Wolfpa see, despite a) explaining why she needed to go & b) her DH being the dad, she's still being blamed for the incompetent idiots lack of care.

AhBiscuits · 24/07/2024 18:22

You will get more YABUs because of your ridiculous boast about being a high earner.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 24/07/2024 18:23

Oh come on, he's an 8 year old kid who went down the water slide backwards, like many kids do 🙄

Shame he bumped his head but at least he's ok and he had fun.
