If you live in a middle class area do you ever hear your neighbours argue?

Never heard a single neighbour argue and it makes me so self conscious when DH and I do. Not that we argue often. Dh and I raised our voices earlier in the evening as we had very different opinions on how to approach ab annoying task we are getting through. All the windows were wide open. So embarrassed. It was only for 5 minutes.

Is it because we live in a middle class area in the Home Counties?

Just for context our cul de sac is described as sought after on house listings. Most people are professionals around here. Do these people just have calm discussions?

Have lived here for 10 years. Never heard a peep.

Obviously I’m genuinely glad that people are not losing their temper at one another

I often think this too, we argue occasionally and my neighbours appear to be saintly.

Bridgetoo · 22/07/2024 22:43

No I can't ever hear people arguing. Is that a common thing? I've never heard it anywhere I've lived!

MiriamMay · 22/07/2024 22:43

I live next to a very wealthy family and yes they argue a lot. They seem to spend most weekends drunk from morning to night.

Krumblina · 22/07/2024 22:43

Do you proper scream at eachother? That's when people notice.
Raising voice a bit won't be noticeable.

gettingolderbutcooler · 22/07/2024 22:43

Well, I'm sure my lovely neighbours heard me yelling at my husband to fuck right off as he was leaving for work a few weeks ago. 😁

gettingolderbutcooler · 22/07/2024 22:43

Surrey, by the way.

HotelCustody · 22/07/2024 22:44

Nearly all property listings state the area is sought after…

Other than that it’s a bit of an odd question to ask and potentially offensive.

honeyfox · 22/07/2024 22:45

I've lived in two different middle class estates in the last ten years and I've never heard the neighbours arguing (heard plenty of kids shouting). Nothing wrong with a difference of opinion though.

sugarbyebye · 22/07/2024 22:45

No, never hear any. I mean, they happen, but no shouting and screaming, just discussion arguments and probably some sulks and huffs.

I grew up in a household with shouting and screaming and things being thrown at each other and walls, and neighbours shouting and screaming at each other on the street. So I appreciate my nice, calm middle class life and non- violent partner.

Better soundproofing in more expensive properties

GreenMarigold · 22/07/2024 22:46

I once heard a raised voice from the neighbours on one side when one of their teenage sons was apparently refusing to wear trousers 🤣 But that’s the only time I’ve ever overheard an argument at home!

Why offensive?

what is offensive? my insinuation that lower class people are the shouty lot?

I live in a nice area and the only people I’ve heard arguing in ten years living here are directly across the close from us. Have only heard them a small handful of times. They are a bit boozy and have the occasional party and those sort of nights are the ones that sometimes end in a row. Also hear the woman bellowing at her kids in the mornings trying to get them in the car. Not often though and it doesn’t sound worrying.

Alicewinn · 22/07/2024 22:48

We argue with windows open and occasionally I hear my neighbours kicking off too. Phew 😅

SandPoppit · 22/07/2024 22:48

Snapped and raised my voice in the drive today over teenager's forgotten lunchbox. Teen argued back - I'm the only person I hear doing this sort of stuff. 😊

Yes.

Barrol · 22/07/2024 22:50

I wasn’t screaming at the top of my lungs but I did tell DH to fucking do the whole lot himself if he’s such an bloody expert - can’t say I was talking when I communicated this

I live on a council estate, in a council house, and rarely ever hear my neighbours argue.

I once heard some bloke shouting, "Fuck off you cow!" Before zooming off in the car; and I once a woman throwing clothes out of the window to another woman, shouting, ”If you want him, you can have him, love. He's a fucking bastard and you're a slag!" But that's twice in 20 years.

randoname · 22/07/2024 22:53

4 posh areas over 50 years and literally one in each area- one blazing row every 10 years.
Apart from the murder next door which no one heard.

TheChosenTwo · 22/07/2024 22:53

Pretty quiet around here apart from Dh’s general booming voice! I constantly feel like I’m shushing him (a reminder that he probably needs his ears syringing again!) when the back doors are open or if we are in the garden. Not shouting/arguments though, we don’t have shouty arguments. Tense words sometimes but I grew up in a shouty house and don’t like it and he’s quite laid back and relaxed about stuff so we just don’t really ever get to that point.
Do sometimes hear one side snapping at each other about not leaving the tea to brew long enough 😂
Actually the other side used to have quite loud rows but they separated and he left so not anymore.

AtomicBlondeRose · 22/07/2024 22:53

I live in a naice area now and never hear people argue, although my next door neighbours do communicate mostly through bellowing up and down stairs like Kerry’s mum in This Country which makes us laugh (they’re nice people!).

I definitely heard more shouting and arguing when I lived in a council house and in terraced housing, but it might just be the proximity rather than the class difference.

Somepeoplearesnippy · 22/07/2024 22:54

We live in a road of detached houses so probably wouldn't hear people fighting indoors.

I did once hear an incredibly heated argument between the couple across the road neighbours. They have a young family and it was late at night and it was conducted in hushed tones at the end of their path. It was quiet but it sounded intense.

Barrol · 22/07/2024 22:54

To anyone who is working class please just take this question in good faith. I’m trying to understand why I’m making a show of myself. I’m not trying to offend in the slightest.
