To worry for Kamala Harris - woman, half black, half Asian, married to a Jewish man

I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

It would be interesting if MN were to survey the site for age, social class and earnings data, and I am sure they could monetise it big time if they did, but if they were to do so, I would upsticks. And so would a huge number of regular posters who don't come to chat to have their data mined. We come to discuss the issues of the day, sometimes heatedly, ignore the bitchy posters. I could write a list of posters that I encounter regularly, who are interested in the same topics and can be relied upon to have an opinion, which may not be the same as mine, but I read their posts with interest and quite often my instinctive opinion shifts a bit.

MN is a bit of an old fogey site.
KH is doing just fine on Tiktok.

Her biggest advantage is, she is not going to be an octogenarian president.
The people who were not going to vote, are now going to vote.
Young people like a politician with a sense of humour.
Beyonce + Taylor Swift like her enough to throw a concert.

We no longer live in a boomer dominated world.

Clinton did the celeb thing, maybe those two will be different though

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 23/07/2024 20:14

Not all MN's are 60 but many of us older ones now have DC that are the new MNers. It is a bit weird and may cause the site to thrive or die. MN has a wide age range, other sites are available.

Some examples

%3D

Do you have any better examples? The first link doesn't work.

In the second video, she said "significance of the passage of time" a somewhat jarring number of times in a relatively short period (4 times in a minute). The rest of her speech reads fine, to me.

https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/remarks-the-vice-president-sunset-louisiana

If thats considered a notable example of a flub by her, I can only assume she's a pretty excellent speaker.

(Not least compared to deranged Donald, who is actually less coherent than Biden - but delivers his nonsense with more strength than Biden could manage).

WildLemur · 23/07/2024 20:58

I'm minded to agree with her that visiting the border isn't exactly necessary in dealing with the border crisis. It's like asking Farage/Sunak/Braverman "have you been to the coast?" when they're talking about stopping the boats.

And I don't know why you're posting that "Kamala laughs at Ukraine refugees" clip again; it was nonsense the first time you posted it.

What ..like how a doctor can diagnose a patient without physically examining them? Nope.

Of course physically going to the border would be helpful to determine the situation there and ways to address it. And the numbers don’t lie- the border issues have spiralled out of control since she has been czar. So it’s not like her not visiting method is working either.

Name one thing she has done well while in office.

But she is not, and has never been, the "border czar" - that's an untruthful line of attack.

"In fact, Harris was never put in charge of the border or immigration policy. Nor was she involved in overseeing law-enforcement efforts or guiding the federal response to the crisis. Her mandate was much narrower: to focus on examining and improving the underlying conditions in the Northern Triangle of Central America—El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras—which has been racked by decades of poverty, war, chronic violence, and political instability. The strategy relied on allocating billions for economic programs and stimulating private-sector investment in the region in hopes that these programs would ultimately lead fewer migrants to make the dangerous journey north."

Also, when the Dems did try to pass legislation to tighten up the border, Republicans (who initially seemed supportive) tanked the bill at Trump's request - to help him campaign on the issue.

Kamala Harris Wasn't the ‘Border Czar.’ Here’s What She Did

Harris focused on improving conditions in Central America's Northern Triangle and addressing root causes of migration

She has achieved nothing whilst in office.

Her comments on the Israel-Gaza situation are concerning.

I am not pro- trump. But KH is really not up to the job. It’s worrying.

Most Vice President's don't achieve anything of note, that's the nature of the office.

What comments on Israel and Palestine concern you?

Overtheatlantic · 23/07/2024 22:34

Kamala Harris is hugely capable of being President. She doesn’t need to have done anything as vice president. Except to support the president, which she did. Her track record as the attorney general of California and her time as Joe Biden’s vp place her well. She’s not an intellectual lightweight as the Magas hope. And she’s certainly not a traitor.

SoreAndTired1 · 24/07/2024 04:56

CustardCreams2 · 23/07/2024 20:49

Her presidency would be awful.

I wonder how many of these youtube 'clips' are actually genuine. One of them made the news yesterday for extending her laugh at a press conference longer than what it actually was in reality in the original video. There is a lot of fuckery and video editing/manipulation going on, so I'd like to see the actual source news sites of the originals, instead of some 'YT clips' by a far rightist on a video clip site where every man and his dog can edit and upload their home made/home edited crap. Most of these videos are hoaxes or edited to look bad. From all the speeches I've seen of her live, she is a very compelling and gifted orator.

BIossomtoes · 24/07/2024 07:47

Biden is even older than the Boomer generation!

He’s not. He’s an early boomer born in 1945. Oh, please ignore me, hopefully my maths will improve after I’ve drunk my coffee. 🙈

Edited

He was born in November 1942, @BIossomtoes, he’s Silent Generation.

I can’t comment pre-coffee either. 😂

Unfortunately, Harris appears to align with Biden on Gaza/ Israel.

But Trump would likely be even worse

@WildLemur " But she consistently comes across as having not a clue about anything."

I don't agree. I have so far seen her make two speeches since Biden withdrew. Both articulate. And there are many examples of her sounding as if she has many clues about lots of things-if we ignore the tacked together and manipulated clips.

popthepopcorns · 24/07/2024 15:37

Are other posters seeing adverts on MN encouraging US voters abroad to vote in the election?

I'm guessing expats are more likely to vote for KH.

I can’t understand the rationale that pitches her not up for the job - she seems intelligent and very capable.

I really hope she wins, I didn't think she stood a chance at first but now I do.

She seems to be playing well with Gen Z which could be quite big as the Dems had been losing support from younger voters.

I'm confident she'll win the popular vote but I still think the electoral college makes her the underdog.

No Vice President ever achieves much in that job. It's an understudy role. Do it well, and be a safe pair of hands, standing in the wings in case the worst happens, and wait for history.

FWIW, I think KH will be better as a Presidential candidate now than she was four years ago. There are real issues, like reproductive rights and abortion, for her to get into. The VP was never going to stop the tide of migration across the Rio Grande given the poverty, joblessness, crime, violence and everything else bad south of the border. That is simply a wave of people moving for the hope of something better (or not worse) elsewhere.

Her career as a public attorney/prosecutor allows her scope to challenge Trump on his convictions. I would not elect a known felon: would you?

The person she chooses as a running mate will be a key component in her success/failure.

WildLemur · 24/07/2024 21:14

If it were true, perhaps, but it does not seem to be.

Though I wouldn't rule out something like it happening.
