To worry for Kamala Harris - woman, half black, half Asian, married to a Jewish man

I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

Oh and,
She's Not As Good As (looks around for another black female comparison, doesn't matter that they are not a politician and not running for the nomination ) Michelle Obama.

ViciousCurrentBun · 23/07/2024 08:37

She is not a wall flower she is currently vice president and whilst I’m sure she has at some point had to endure some racism and sexism in her world I bet she does not let it define her. If you do that you fold in on yourself and become a victim and not a survivor. I’m mixed race and it’s a mentality that is to be avoided. I also find white people seem to do a lot of hand wringing about this, just stop with white guilt it’s actually unhelpful and creates division in a different way to racists but it’s still there.

DarkandStormyNightie · 23/07/2024 08:39

Just seen her speech yesterday, wow! she came out swinging. About time.

Love how she brought out her experiences as a prosecutor and how she's dealt with sexual abusers and fraudsters before. That she knows exactly Donald Trump's type as she's dealt with his kind before.

I think she's going to be just fine 🙂

History is being made people, sit back and enjoy the moment.

SoreAndTired1 · 23/07/2024 08:41

YANBU I worry now too, especially with how women are treated in America. Well not just America, but world-wide, although America seems particularly virently misogynist. Btw she is half black and half Indian. 0 Asian in her.

powershowerforanhour · 23/07/2024 08:47

In answer to the OP- yes she is going to to get a brutal amount of hatred thrown at her if she gets the top job. I watched a News Agents podcast and they said Barack Obama used to get 30 death threats / day. Expect double this plus all the torture rape- death threats which pretty much every woman on telly from Mary Beard to Holly Willoughby to Saffie Osborne gets.
She'll probably get even more than Diane Abbott gets. They'll have to have extra office space at the White House for everyone sifting though the shit.

daisychain01 · 23/07/2024 03:07

The more vile and threatening he is, out in the open, the better. The best possible thing would be if he can be baited into threatening to sexually assault her

unfortunately this will boost Trump's popularity even more.

With the people who are already fanatical about him maybe, but they are going to turn out and vote for him anyway.

I think the focus of the Democrats' campaign should be to get people who think it doesn't matter, or who have become resigned, or disillusioned to get behind them and show up to vote. A big target for them is the women's rights vote.

"her background is problematic. Namely, she had an affair with the mayor of San Fran which is apparently why she got the prosecutor job."

Apparent to whom? Here's Snopes' conclusion:
www.snopes.com/fact-check/kamala-harris-affair-willie-brown/

"Her run for nomination included a manifesto which was Marxist in nature."
Isn't reds under the bed scaremongering a bit outdated by about 60 years?

Ok, so far we've got:
She slept her way to the top (slutty woman!)
She's a giggly incompetent unserious woman (silly woman!)
She's a dirty nasty woman who slept with somebody else's husband and is an alcoholic*(bad woman!)
She's a crazy bitter barren cat lady who is irrelevant and should be viewed with deep suspicion because she doesn't have children
(hag woman!)
She's a token box ticking diversity hire with no talent who would probably be stacking shelves at WalMart if she was a white man
(paraphrasing)
She's a commie (ah the nostalgia)
Anything else? She's married to a Jewish man so perhaps that means she's in the grip of the panglobal secret alien paedo lizard people who are conspiring to subjugate the world. Or something.

*no idea what this rumour is based on, she probably got tiddly on white wine spritzers at a beach party in her 20s but hey let's throw that in

You left out "and she's faced no misogyny at all"

I agree. Trump supporters will always vote for Trump, that's a given and largely irrelevant because that's not her target audience.

She needs to go after independent swing voters, moderate Republicans and the female vote. This is where the election will be decided.

Prosecutor Vs Convicted Felon, love how they're now framing that.

DarkandStormyNightie · 23/07/2024 09:05

To add, as a former prosecutor she will have faced many very credible death threats just trying to do her job. I think she's no stranger to what's ahead.

Anniegetyourgun · 23/07/2024 10:14

"she's in the grip of the panglobal secret alien paedo lizard people who are conspiring to subjugate the world"

Well that just goes with being a Democrat anyway. Proof: support from Clintons. Check her cellar! Does she like pizza?

(Yeah um, I am joking actually. You have to spell it out these days because it's not as obvious as you might hope.)

In the UK, "Asian" refers to people from the Indian subcontinent i.e. of Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Sri Lankan heritage.

Have you actually listened to any of her speeches? Woman is practically incoherent at times. I think she would be a disaster!
**
Oh well, watching her and Trump debate each other will be entertaining.”

Nonsense. Her speech last night was erudite, witty and sharp. She will wipe the floor with Trump. I very much doubt he’ll agree to debate because now, he’s the old man who goes off at a tangent.

poetryandwine · 23/07/2024 11:36

It was reported yesterday in a Telegraph article posted on another thread that Trump is refusing to debate Harris. I think we all know why.

Nevertheless some of the misogyny on this thread has shocked me

@Bucees

Per your post, her ex boyfriend confirmed their relationship. Personally I don’t care about anyone’s private life. Stuff happens to the best of us. I also do not care that her ex boyfriend might or might not have been involved in her being selected for her prosecutor role. What I judge her on is her run for nomination, her record as a prosecutor and her performance as VP. Two out of three I find lacking but she is a much better choice than Trump.

As I previously said, I’d prefer a nominee who I fully support and not just be voting to avoid another 4 years of Trump. My biggest concern is the democrats having a candidate people want to vote for as I fear the typical American voter will otherwise abstain from voting, which will result in Trump winning the election.

Again, Kamala Harris’ roles as both the San Fransisco DA and California Attorney General were won by city wide and state wide popular vote, respectively. Then of course she was elected to the Senate

The only major office to which she was in some sense appointed is VP

That's strange. They're Middle Eastern or Arabic everywhere else. It would be like calling a Swedish person an African, that's how much sense calling Middle Easterners Asian makes. What would you call actual Asians - ie Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean etc, then?

Sausagenbacon · 23/07/2024 13:30

What an ignorant post.
Have you been to the USA? Or anywhere outside of Europe?

Sausagenbacon · 23/07/2024 13:31

And it's virulently. HTH

Motomum23 · 23/07/2024 13:42

She doesn't seem able to explain anything beyond the way you would communicate to an over excited toddler with little understanding of the world - I don't care what her ethnicity or colour she is a complete moron.

Ahem. The Indian subcontinent is pretty firmly located in Asia!! "Asian" was historically shorthand for Indian/Pakistani people in the UK, as they are by far the UK's largest non European immigrant population, although nowadays "South Asian" is used too. The blanket term in the UK for Chinese/Korean/Vietnamese etc people would be "East Asian".

The Middle East to me would be anywhere from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Arabian peninsula to Iran/Iraq to some of the southern ex Soviet States, although that's off the top of my head.

BruFord · 23/07/2024 14:01

@crackofdoom yes, where I live in the US, people of Indian or Pakistani descent generally refer to themselves as South Asian. Presumably because those countries are in South Asia, which is pretty vast. 🤷

People from the Indian subcontinent are not in any sense "Middle Eastern or Arabic" - what an utterly bizarre statement - literally no-one thinks this, let alone "everywhere else." In fact in the Middle East (and in Africa), the usage of "Asian" is the same as the British usage.

What you refer to as "actual Asians" would generally be termed "East Asian" in the UK, although many people would still use the somewhat outdated term "oriental".

You might want to take a look at a map at some point to find out what Asia actually is - it's a much bigger part of the world than you appear to think it is.

You may or may not care for KH. That’s fine. But she has been elected District Attorney of San Fransisco and Attorney General of CA (which would be in the G7 ranking ahead of Britain economically if it were a country) then Senator whilst riding on no one’s coat tails.

Many people obviously like her communications style and the work she has done in those jobs. Perhaps she is not a moron after all.
