To worry for Kamala Harris - woman, half black, half Asian, married to a Jewish man

I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

If it were true, perhaps, but it does not seem to be.

Though I wouldn't rule out something like it happening.

Ah, shame

Beyonce has given Kamala Harris permission to use her song ‘Freedom’ for her presidential campaign

@WildLemur Yes, I saw that it’s just rumor.

@DuncinToffee’s post promoted me to conduct a “highly scientific” survey of DD (19) and her boyfriend (20). They say that Beyoncé would mainly appeal to Millennials (although Gen Z do like her) and TS to Gen Zer’s…,so joining forces in support of KH could potentially motivate two generations!

HelenaTranscart · 24/07/2024 21:37

KH won't win, not because she's a WOC, but because she is simply not up to the job. She's only VP because she ticks all the DEI boxes, so the Democrats are about to reep what they sow. If they'd selected a candidate on merit, they may have stood a chance against Trump, but oh no, it's got to be an 'oppressed and marginalised' person. Hell mend them, and God help us all when Trump gets in as a result.

DEI just suggests you are judging her on her race, I’m afraid.
Also it’s reap.

BIossomtoes · 24/07/2024 22:03

Why anyone would think that a woman with a successful legal career isn’t capable of being president is beyond me. It’s strangely reminiscent of the criticism levelled at our PM during the election campaign.

WildLemur · 24/07/2024 22:32

Geez, some guest on Fox Business (Fox News subsidiary) just accused Harris of getting to where she is by sucking dick (the original "hawk tuah" girl, was the phrase used).

The American right (the politicians and news channels, at least...I pity half of the voters) are beyond appalling.

BIossomtoes · 24/07/2024 22:34

Hope she sues for slander and defamation of character.

WildLemur · 24/07/2024 22:40

It's Fox News, though. They're quite willing to take the lawsuits that come with spreading lies - see the $787.5 million dollar settlement they paid Dominon Voting Systems after spreading lies about their voting machines - because their profits offset it.

HelenaTranscart · 24/07/2024 23:00

cardibach · 24/07/2024 21:57

I'm making the opposite argument: colour, creed, gender, ability to spell etc. shouldn't factor in selection, but that's been the Democrat's policy - meritocracy has been abandoned in favour of prioritising 'oppressed' groups. It's DEI & Critical Theory 101.

And FWIW I think KemiB should be the next Tory leader because she's the best person for the job, not because she ticks some social justice warrior's boxes.

"her background is problematic. Namely, she had an affair with the mayor of San Fran which is apparently why she got the prosecutor job."

Apparent to whom? Here's Snopes' conclusion:
www.snopes.com/fact-check/kamala-harris-affair-willie-brown/

"Her run for nomination included a manifesto which was Marxist in nature."
Isn't reds under the bed scaremongering a bit outdated by about 60 years?

Ok, so far we've got:
She slept her way to the top (slutty woman!)
She's a giggly incompetent unserious woman (silly woman!)
She's a dirty nasty woman who slept with somebody else's husband and is an alcoholic*(bad woman!)
She's a crazy bitter barren cat lady who is irrelevant and should be viewed with deep suspicion because she doesn't have children
(hag woman!)
She's a token box ticking diversity hire with no talent who would probably be stacking shelves at WalMart if she was a white man
(paraphrasing)
She's a commie (ah the nostalgia)
Anything else? She's married to a Jewish man so perhaps that means she's in the grip of the panglobal secret alien paedo lizard people who are conspiring to subjugate the world. Or something.

*no idea what this rumour is based on, she probably got tiddly on white wine spritzers at a beach party in her 20s but hey let's throw that in

She is also Kamala. Not Harris, but Kamala.
Male politicians aren't addressed or discussed by their first name.
And no, it's not to make them more personable, as I heard some twat say, it's a dominance thing. Like the all star athlete with his surname written in big letters across his back.

She 'slept her way to the top' as an insult is so stupid. Taking the moral high ground and voting for a criminal who sleeps with prostitutes while married and trades women like used cars is laughable. We've all heard his vile tirades. He is openly racist, sexist, misogynistic. VP Harris had a brief relationship 30 years ago so, hey, lets take that non issue and see what we can do with it 🙄

BIossomtoes · 24/07/2024 23:10

She is also Kamala. Not Harris, but Kamala.

I refer to all politicians by their second name alone. She’s not my mate.

Someone hasn't watched enough West Wing 😂

"She's only VP because......" can probably be applied to every VP and VP running mate forever. Was Sarah Palin up for the job? Or was she chosen because of who she would appeal to?
Was Pence chosen because of his abilities, or was he chosen for the ability to appeal to a certain demographic? Much like Trumps vile VP pick this time. You think he's been picked on merit? Not to lock in those religious zealots and backward Southern voters? Usually after they've gerrymandered the shit out of the regions to double ensure their success. Or is that 'different'? 🙄

This has nothing to do with racism and misogyny- it comes down to COMPETENCE alone. Kamala Harris is completely out of her depth, totally incompetent and quite frankly a bit thick. She gives women in power a bad name.

Many many examples

  1. When at press conference with polish president- a lengthy question directed to her on USA policy re infrastructure plans for Ukrainian refugees - it’s obvious she hasn’t even understood the question, then looks to polish president to answer for her. Then she starts laughing maniacally and eventually squeaks out “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” Sorry wtf?
  2. She said the USA has a strong and enduring relationship with North Korea. LOL. She clearly had no knowledge on this.
  3. Has achieved nothing of more from her time in office. NOTHING. After being border czar for years has not even bothered to visit the border.
  4. Talks In meaningless “word salads” that make no sense.
  5. She was a terrible prosecutor- putting thousands of people in prison for smoking weed.
  6. Innumerable other examples

The most comprehensive answer I have ever seen her give is on the topic of White House M&M’s. She is in no way fit to be POTUS - solely on the basis of incompetence. Nothing to do with race or gender.

@CustardCreams2
I will respond to the first of your points. As a Pole myself I was WTF when I read about the manic laugh. Why is she laughing at our ( moronic) president when we are doing so much for Ukraine? But then I actually watched and listened the video.
It is hard not to laugh, when a president of a NATO ally states at a press conference that “a friend in need is a friend in DICK”. Nobody would have blamed him for using an interpreter, but instead he opted for showing off his English and embarrassing us (again).

I am sure she made some blunders, many other well respected politicians have done too.
However, she couldn’t have been that bad of a prosecutor since she was elected a Senator AFTER being Attorney General.
She may not be a material for an outstanding president like Obama, but if she does win, she will make a decent ‘average’ president, just like many of her predecessors.
She is million times more suited to be a president than her opponent.

@CJsGoldfish I wouldn’t vote for him, but you can’t deny that Vance has grit and intellect. Are you aware of his background?

Yes YABU.

she hasn’t been the victim of racism or misogyny so far, so there’s no reason to suppose that will change.

her record as a DA and politician has been criticized, including by women and that is legitimate and not prejudice.

Oh please, she very definitely has been subject to racism and misogyny, and Trump has form for both.

Well I hope she does get any horrible things her way either. However, Kamala Harris is an open goal for memes and jokes. Not because of her race or gender but because of how she is. Why do you want a woman president and a first at all costs? Get it right and it would be inspiring otherwise it could insulting to us as women and also of mixed raced families like me.

Edited

The Democrats are backing Kamala because they see her as their best chance of winning in the circumstances, not because they want a “first”.

It’s early days but Kamala’s apparent meme-ability also seems to be working to her favour, so far.

Out of interest, have you watched either of her speeches over the last week and, if so, what did you make of them?

dottiehens · 25/07/2024 03:56

This is 2020 all over again. Anyone is better than Trump and see how we got it with Biden. I blame the Democrats for this shitshow.

I have seen enough of her and know enough. It is not like she is just coming fresh and unknown. Democrats will vote for her and Republicans for Trump so will see about the floating voters. My children who are old enough to make an opinion both think she is cute but not president material based on TikTok videos.

I am indeed. I even saw the movie 🤷‍♀️

His background doesn't make his comments any less vile. Or the idea that he's been picked to appeal to fellow hillbillies any less true 🙄

Aside from his latest "childless cat lady" insults or the criticism of people who left unhappy, or "even violent" marriages as a trick of the sexual revolution, you know he was a self confessed 'Never Trump' guy not too long ago? That he called Donald an idiot and 'Americas Hitler'? That he such a sell out as well as having the ugly character traits he has shown, isn't excused by his background

knitnerd90 · 25/07/2024 06:34

The New York Post is a Murdoch rag on par with the Sun. If you have to go there to get clips then you are scraping the bottom of the barrel, and they're known to manipulate videos through slicing and dicing. I doubt Taylor Swift will do a fundraiser. She keeps herself politically nonpartisan.

her views on Israel/palestine are broadly acceptable for the US, which mean both the left and right are going to scream, but it is absolutely impossible to have perfect views on that topic. For every vote you gain by shifting on it, you lose someone else.

As I said in another thread: Kamala was clear and convincing in the past couple of days. Black women are all out for her. Winning in the USA isn't just about swing voters (there's fewer and fewer) but about motivating your base to show up and vote. Harris will motivate Black voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, and Black turnout is pivotal in those states. It will also help her hold Georgia.

Part of Hillary Clinton's problem was being Hillary Clinton. The media spent almost 25 years going after her. She had a lot of baggage, not to mention Russian interference and the late investigation.

Sausagenbacon · 25/07/2024 06:37

And labelling a whole bunch of voters 'deploarables'
That'll do it

knitnerd90 · 25/07/2024 06:46

I was in the US for that election. I am not convinced it on its own was enough to tip it. If calling people "deplorable" were enough to tip an election, everything Trump says and said should have made him lose.
