Selfie in hospital with dying relative

TheAverageJoanne · 21/07/2024 12:36

My uncle died in hospital this morning after a stroke on Friday. My cousin (his nephew) posted a selfie on Facebook of himself by my uncle's bedside with a caption saying he was spending precious moments with him. I don't know if he was dead or alive or when the picture was actually taken but I'm furious. My uncle was visible laid out in the bed. I feel very upset about it and I think it's really distasteful. Do you, or is it me being oversensitive?

OP posts:

Nasty. It’s tasteless and nasty

JustPleachy · 21/07/2024 12:47

It was his nephew.

OP I think that’s awful. No way for your uncle to consent to that.

Yes and I see you didn't read my whole post 🤣

@Spirallingdownwards
It’s his uncle- it’s right there in the op.

Yes and I see you didn't read my whole post either

@LondonFox we live in a society where we are supposed to protect and advocate for the vulnerable. If this isn't the definition of vulnerable then I don't know what is. Great that you'd be happy to have your last moments splashed on social media. Definitely not what I'd want.

You are not voulnerable if you are fucking dead.
Being dead entail not knowing what is going on in the world of living so it is not like social media post can uppset you lol.

And I am speaking as a person who does not have any social media.

Bluebirdover · 21/07/2024 21:22

@LondonFox you sound awful! The relatives are vulnerable.

Also try using spell check! Also reread your posts, so they make a little bit of sense.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 21/07/2024 21:26

A fucking nice memory of me dying …. Posted publicly. FML

Ahhh yes, what everyone wants isn’t it.@LondonFox I’ll post stay the fuck off social media, or get disinherited - in my will.

Realduchymarmalade · 21/07/2024 21:32

Ghoulish and macabre, I cannot fathom such behaviour. People are so desperate for.. what is it? Attention? Validation? Approbation? It’s like a mental illness and it’s rife.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 21/07/2024 15:54

He's in his 40s

Oh wow, ignore my comment then! I imagined this nephew being around 16!!

ObliviousCoalmine · 21/07/2024 22:16

@FatmanandKnobbin yes, I expect people to not post photos of their children on social media; alive or dead.

Take the photo sure, but it doesn't need to be your Facebook profile picture. Good lord.

Nothing needs to be online at all.

Your judgement of how a bereaved parent chooses to cope with their loss and share photos of their child isn't needed either, but here we are.

It's far less offensive to see a photo of someone precious child than it is to read sanctimonious posts judging a grieving parent for sharing those photos imo.

@Spirallingdownwards Yes I did read your whole post, then I replied (as did @GrazingSheep ), then you edited it. That’s why the quoted post says “edited”.

There is nothing at all wrong with the mistake you made, but it’s disingenuous to pretend you didn’t make it.

But you can also see that you both replied after it was actually edited.

Why? It is social media not a dissertation.
Try reading comprehension course if you struggle

Bluebirdover · 22/07/2024 06:25

@LondonFox I don't think I need a reading comprehension course, you on the other hand, did use some very strange made up words.....

They hadn’t seen your edit when they replied to you.

I'm living with incurable cancer if anyone does that to me and there is an afterlife I will haunt them!

There’s no need to pull people up on their spelling, we all make mistakes.

MidnightPatrol · 22/07/2024 06:57

YANBU

I don’t think anyone wants a picture of them close to death on social media, basically for likes.

One of the more bizarre developments of the last decade.

Bereavedupset · 22/07/2024 07:01

Just awful!

My mother died recently and the last thing on my mind was to take a photo, let alone post it on SM as she lay dying.

LadyCrumpet · 22/07/2024 07:47

I'd take pictures but wouldn't post them.

I sat beside my dying DF for a week and wouldn't have dreamed of taking a photo. Surely you have enough photos of your dad when he was smiling and healthy? Honestly, the world has gone mad - hopefully future generations will look back on this obsession with "selfies" and posting everything on SM in horror.

💐I'm so sorry you're going through that @Florsilvestredelcampo and if anybody was as disgusting as to do that, I'd haunt the hell out of them!

Bluebirdover · 22/07/2024 09:08

@diktat mistakes? GrinGrin Hardly!

Apart from that @LondonFox is also fucking rude!

Florsilvestredelcampo · 22/07/2024 12:05

Thinking about it ,wasn't it in vogue during Queen Victoria's reign to take death masks or locks of hair and teeth which were then made into lockets or rings? Is this just a modern more tasteless take on that?

charitynamechange · 22/07/2024 12:21

It was. I think they were largely for private viewing however.

But there was also no universal suffrage in the nineteenth century, the age of consent wasn't raised to 16 until the 1880s, child labour in factories was tolerated etc etc.

So comparing social mores against those of the Victorian era doesn't really do anyone any favours!
