Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

@ForeverDelayedEpiphany just out of interest. Is that 26k in GBP or their own currency? It's a crazy amount if GBP/euro. But if it's alaskan currency it's about £400. Not relevant just being nosey!

Sorry to hear that, @Megifer . I'm fortunate that the diet really suits me, and dairy really doesn't, and I never really liked meat as a child, so I'm basically eating what I want to as well as doing it for ethical reasons. I do try to avoid animal products in everything as far as possible, but beyond a certain point it becomes difficult - glue in furniture springs to mind. I suppose it's a case of doing the best we can. As regards fur, I'm personally grateful to meat-eaters who oppose fur - without them we would still be seeing a lot more of it around.

Thanks 😊 Yea was a strange mix of sadness and relief that I had a reason for feeling so ill! And I won't lie, i think a bit of relief that I had a health reason to stop.

"I suppose it's a case of doing the best we can" - this is my view too. If a meat eater is outraged at fur farming it seems really strange that some vegans appear to prefer it if the meat eater didn't care at all, because at least they're not hypocritical. So the "are you vegan" argument just seems at cross purposes, why does it matter if the person who cares about one form of animal cruelty also eats meat? Surely its a good thing that it's one more person caring for a cause that the vegan also cares about.

Growlybear83 · 21/07/2024 12:41

I think you're being totally unreasonable using the term 'hate on' - you hate something, and adding the 'on' is meaningless.

I doubt that people are jealous of you having a mink coat. It's not something that most people would wear nowadays and if anyone did want to buy one, they are very cheap to buy secondhand. When we were clearing out my late mother in law's flat we came across her treasured musquash coat, which she paid at least £2000 for many years ago. I would never have wanted to wear it, and when we tried to sell it, we found it was virtually worthless. No charity shops will accept donations of fur, and you can't sell fur on Vinted. It's currently in a bag in the shed.

NasiDagang · 21/07/2024 12:42

Tomatina · 21/07/2024 11:27

People won't know you inherited it - they'll assume you bought it, with the money going into the fur trade which as I'm sure you know, is disgustingly cruel. And when they look at you they will just wonder how many beautiful creatures had to die to make one stupid coat for a human who doesn't need it.

These are the same people who will eat meat, wear leather shoes and use leather furniture.

Very good question, I'm not sure I'm guessing it's in their currency so if so, it would make it less likely to be a obscene amount of money. Even though £400 is a lot, I don't think anyone would pay £26k for any item of clothing 🤔

Tbh the fact that you have to come on here to ask why, says an awful lot about your character. I wouldn't even attempt to explain why, because I just don't think you'd get it. And of course you can wear what you want, just like people can also judge you if they want to.

LittleRedYarny · 21/07/2024 12:44

Disappointing, was expecting this to be about a cat being moaned at for loving leaving their fur all over their servants rags.

LondonFox · 21/07/2024 12:44

Shefliesonherownwings · 21/07/2024 12:28

This is a joke right?? You’re not actually being serious about this. You can’t genuinely think people are jealous over a fur coat??!! It couldn’t possible be because people are disgusted at you wearing fur itself and the suffering that mink went through to be made into a piece of clothing? Catch yourself on.

I would like to own silver fox long coat but cannot afford it.
If I saw someone in it I'd be jealous but also would not complain to that person l8ke a child

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 21/07/2024 12:44

I imagine people look at you and think what I would think 'what a tit.'

From the way you're twittering on, I think you think it's some sort of badge of honour - showing how much better or richer, you are than other people - but in actual fact the sorts of people who have coats like that don't typically need to crow abut it.

It's called class, OP. Try and find some.

Pic for reference...

That's so ''cheap looking'' ...Revolting.

On the actual animal , it's beautiful. But that jacket is seriously grim.

Poor Snow Leopard or whatever was killed to make that coat.

Why do people hate on my fur coat
CascaChan · 21/07/2024 12:47

@Growlybear83 oh please can I have it so I can wear it and ponce around the house pretending to be rich folk whilst singing the Cruella de Ville song when I’m home alone?

Crumpleton · 21/07/2024 12:47

Can guarantee I'm not remotely jealous of your mink, or any other fir clothing/items anyone chooses to own.

It's just my opinion that animal fir only really ever looks good on the animal it belongs to.

Martinohmygod · 21/07/2024 12:47

This is nothing new I was in a bank early 90’s and a lady strutted in wearing a full length fur coat. She was told off by older ladies in their 70’s.

These are the same people who will eat meat, wear leather shoes and use leather furniture.

But the point is about the fur trade in general and how the animals are killed. Meat-eating is a totally different aspect of killing animals and in this country is done in a humane way (apart of course from Halal killing process). The fur trade is totally inhumane.

SeeSeeRider · 21/07/2024 12:50

My darling husband thought it was 'fur coat, no knickers', and I think it should be 'red hat, no knickers' - which one of us is right? Or are we both wrong?

HoppingPavlova · 21/07/2024 12:50

Nope, not jealous, and wouldn’t be caught dead in it, because it’s real owner was.

Thedayb4youcame · 21/07/2024 12:51

Blendeddogs · 21/07/2024 10:58

Is this a joke? Of course people can be offended.
like using ivory or anything else

It reads like a joke. It doesn't read like a post would.

SeeSeeRider · 21/07/2024 12:51

BTW - I asked my husband for an animal skin coat, and he bought me a donkey jacket! Ha ha ha ha 😅(I'll get my coat...)

ZoeLoey · 21/07/2024 12:54

You're wearing a dead animal for "style" you deserve any hate you get,and more. Shame on you.

queenofthewild · 21/07/2024 12:56

I absolutely would never buy new fur. But I have a white fur cape in my wardrobe that DM bought on Carnaby street in the 60s. It's so warm and cosy but I don't dare wear it because of people's reactions.

I had almost the same problem when I wore a gorgeous Beaver Lamb coat I inherited from my mother. I couldn’t cope with the abuse, and a local Auction house sold it for me.
Much later, I had a coat with a beautiful faux fur collar and I’m sure only an expert could tell it wasn’t real. I felt a million dollars in it, so that was great.
I am fully in favour of the ban on fur now but this was the 50s and 60s and sadly, we knew no better.
Ironically, before I met him, my husband owned a Mink farm!

I blame the terrible weather for all these nonsense post-and-run threads.

No doubt that it will suddenly appear in The Sun or The Daily Mail.

Probably.

Will be interesting to see if the OP comes back. Her other thread was batshit.

fatphalange · 21/07/2024 12:58

I would assume it was fake. Can't imagine decent people wear real fur. I'd think you were a bit weird, wouldn't be jealous but I'd feel sorry for you wearing a 'fur' and not a weather appropriate jacket for the time of year.
