Why do people hate on my fur coat

CleanCityBird · 21/07/2024 10:54

I’ve a fur coat that I inherited from my Grandmother. It’s a full length mink coat & I absolutely love it. I even wear it in summer.
As we’ve been having terrible weather I’ve been using it, and for the first time people are hating on me for wearing fur. They throw insults that I’m an animal killer, cruel, support the fur industry- on and on it goes.
I think it’s just jealousy. Others would love to own such a statement piece.
Are they all wrong and I’m right, I have a right to wear what I want, I didn’t kill anything & the coat comes from another era. Actually I’m saving it from landfill.

@Megifer , I'm not saying I think it's hypocritical, I'm saying I understand the argument that it is.

Why do you think vegans are hypocritical?

Because they use animal by products for non essential things, I say this as an ex vegan btw so im not being arsey, i know plenty of vegans who agree they are hypocrites at times. (I had to stop and go mainly vegetarian for health reasons which was a bit of a blessing as I did struggle with the diet, eventually ended up in hospital 😩)

By wearing it you’re supporting the idea that it’s not a revolting act to wear the skin of another animal. HTH.

Its not a revolting act at all. It’s not ethical to farm small animals to be skinned alive for the sake of fashion.
It’s fine to wear the hide of an animal to keep warm or dry.

TakeMe2Insanity · 21/07/2024 12:08

Agree.

There are so many things wrong in that post it's difficult to know where to start.

Mercurysinretrograde · 21/07/2024 12:21

It’s hard to wear fur and not look like Ivana Trump. Unless its Winter in Moscow and you’re over 50, you’re likely to come across a bit nouveau riche, a bit tatty and very very tired. If you can pull it off then you do you.

EllyGi · 21/07/2024 12:23

I mean ... it's dated, cruel, ugly and unhygienic ( you can't easily clean that shit) wearing this in summer regardless of weather is totally inappropriate.

WickedSerious · 21/07/2024 12:24

Is the price tag still hanging off it?

Viviennemary · 21/07/2024 12:25

It's an old coat and what's done is done. But does sound like you enjoy the furore round your coat. So crack on.

FOJN · 21/07/2024 12:26

Well this thread is as GAF.

Sorry to hear that, @Megifer . I'm fortunate that the diet really suits me, and dairy really doesn't, and I never really liked meat as a child, so I'm basically eating what I want to as well as doing it for ethical reasons. I do try to avoid animal products in everything as far as possible, but beyond a certain point it becomes difficult - glue in furniture springs to mind. I suppose it's a case of doing the best we can. As regards fur, I'm personally grateful to meat-eaters who oppose fur - without them we would still be seeing a lot more of it around.

godmum56 · 21/07/2024 12:26

I know its subtle but my view is that while such things are admired, owning non vintage specimens is supported..."made ok" Its the same principle as why owning and selling ivory is limited beyond making it illegal to traffic in now. OP, if you want to wear fur, go ahead, its not illegal, but people will judge you.

Shefliesonherownwings · 21/07/2024 12:28

This is a joke right?? You’re not actually being serious about this. You can’t genuinely think people are jealous over a fur coat??!! It couldn’t possible be because people are disgusted at you wearing fur itself and the suffering that mink went through to be made into a piece of clothing? Catch yourself on.

ClonedSquare · 21/07/2024 12:14

I'd judge someone wearing fur because it shows a weird detachment, to me. I don't want to wear the fur of another creature, I find the idea creepy. It was stripped off the corpses of animals (hopefully once they were dead).

To me, it's akin to people who have taxidermy animals. I don't think they're cruel. But I think it's weird to treat other animal's corpses as a commodity for fashion or enjoyment.

(And to be clear, I have similar objections to leather and other skins. I'm not a vegetarian because I believe food is a different matter).

Sadly the flaying of larger animals happens before they are dead.

I see someone’s been watching Friends for thread ideas. 🙄

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 21/07/2024 12:30

My DM sent me some photos from her trip to Alaska a few days ago, from a shop where there were literally a whole load of fur coats and other items at huge prices, from £26,000 upwards. I know she wasnt buying any, and only sent me the photos from curiosity about how much people are willing to pay for these things.

Obviously in somewhere that cold, there is an actual need for very warm clothes, but even that wouldn't ever justify the fact people might spend it excess of a small fortune on such a thing. The prices were just mad - the fact prices were that high and people might pay it, even moreso.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/07/2024 12:31

Do you live in the Antartic ?

If not why are you wearing fur in July ?
If I saw you , I wouldn't be jealous . If I wanted to wear fur then I would . Hardly a statement piece , you cannot give them away now .

I'd just think you were an utter pratt TBH .

And I say that as a non leather/suede/ user

AllyCart · 21/07/2024 12:33

SeeSeeRider · 21/07/2024 11:45

Is "hate on" the new Gen Z way of saying 'be nasty about'?

I was wondering that.

It's bizarre, isn't it? The "on" is completely superfluous.

AquaLeader · 21/07/2024 12:33

I blame the terrible weather for all these nonsense post-and-run threads.

No doubt that it will suddenly appear in The Sun or The Daily Mail.

Adviceneeeeded · 21/07/2024 12:35

It's from another era. Wouldn't bother me.

However in this time and era I happily use leather and wool. Because it comes from an animal where most of the animal will be used for other things too so meat etc, not just for it's fur.

Enjoy your coat and ignore them.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 21/07/2024 12:36

Argh, tried to post but it won't let me..

Started to.say that my DM sent me pics of fur coats for sale in a shop in Alaska where she is on holiday, and the coats were in excess of £26k. The fact some people would actually spend a small fortune on these things (NOT my DM, I hasten to add), is mad in itself.

Newsenmum · 21/07/2024 12:36

This is a joke post right? 🤣

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 21/07/2024 12:37

Pic for reference...

Why do people hate on my fur coat
SeeSeeRider · 21/07/2024 12:37

I agree with the activists who chuck paint on them. Totally.

Sockmate123 · 21/07/2024 12:37

I inherited a real fur coat from my Grandmother who inherited it from her Aunt. I wear it the odd time. I would never ever go out now and buy fur but I feel it's OK to wear this as it's true vintage and from a different time. I'm conflicted about it tbh though. It is seriously warm.

Animatic · 21/07/2024 12:38

Seriously, it literally never get so cold in the UK to justify wearing fur, perhaps unless you go to Inverness in January (and even that is question mark).
Hence the reaction.
BTW, I do find both real and artificial fur hideous.

Sosorryliver · 21/07/2024 12:38

I wouldn’t buy fur but I’ve worn an old fur coat and so, so toasty and soft. It’s much more acceptable for Eastern Europe, perhaps save it for holidays.
