Really basic stuff I just can’t remember

Gross and Net. I can never remember which one relates to which figure and it’s especially annoying as I quite often have to discuss net and gross figures with clients. I don’t know why, I could check a thousand times and still never remember.

Same with Verbs, nouns, etc, which one is which FFS!

There are definitely other things but I’ve forgotten those too.

I think of it as Gross pay because it's 'gross' or disgusting to see what you would have got if there was no tax, NI etc Grin

Allthatsbeautifuldriftsaway · 19/07/2024 07:23

I think of it as an actual net catching all the rubbish

Love that! I'm going to think about it like that from now on! Grin

RivkaTheBold · 19/07/2024 07:28

I think the net is like a fishing net, everything in my net I can have.

AttackMeleys · 19/07/2024 07:29

"There are definitely other things but I’ve forgotten those too." ... This made me laugh op 😄

I think most people have little blind spots, places where their brain just won't engage in the right way to retain the information. Gross and net I know and can use but I need half a second to think about - see also credit and debit.

The word 'definitely'. I've never struggled with spelling generally (<waits for someone to find a mistake in my post>😆), but there is something about it, the 'e's and 'i's perhaps, I always have to double check and say it to myself.

Setting the oven clock. Now that is definitely beyond my capabilities!

IMustDoMoreExercise · 19/07/2024 07:30

I never have an issue with gross and net because net means what is left after things are taken away (in this case what is left after tax is removed).

Also, if you know French then gross means big and so you know that the gross amount will be bigger than the net amount.

I understand about nouns, verbs etc because they are just things that you need to learn and it is easy to get them mixed up.

Think yourself lucky because I believe that primary kids have to learn even more complicated rubbish thanks to the idiot Michael Gove.
I hope the new government stops this soon.

ApocalypseNowt · 19/07/2024 07:33

I struggle with knife and fork. I have to have a think and then remember that the stabby one is the knife.....

No gross is what's after tax. Net is everything before

PuttingDownRoots · 19/07/2024 07:34

Clock changes. I know they go forward in Spring and backwards in autumn.

I just can't process whether it means more or less sleep that night!

<triple checks>.. No it's not. Using a salary as the example, gross is the full amount, net is the amount you receive after deductions are made.

I struggled with this till I remembered it as ‘net’ is the amount of fish you can catch ( in a net) , but gross is the amount of fish is the sea.

So that helped me remember that net is the smaller sum.
I made that up myself, but you can have it for free! :)

Sorry, lack of sleep 🤣

The spelling of “separate”. It looks wrong.

Our English teacher told us sePARate means to PARt... never had trouble since.

I cannot spell deodorant for the life of me... and it's and its always makes me double check.
I didn't used to get words like defence and defense or licence and license until I wrote my rules on a post it note on my PC...
And it don't think I will ever understand effective and affective.

Restaurantcritic · 19/07/2024 07:49

I struggled with stuff like this all my life. Then I found out I was Dyslexic! Not saying you are but processing info is an issue.

Chemenger · 19/07/2024 07:51

I didn’t not know which is the near side and which is the off side of a car. I always resort to driver’s side and passenger side.

ReframeFeelings · 19/07/2024 07:51

For some reason I really struggle with the word subsequent. In my head it makes sense that something that happened first would be subsequent not something that happened after. I'm somehow mentally connecting it to a submarine though I have no idea why that's relevant!

Also objective Vs subjective.

Try working out the time on your cctv camera when you can't find a way to change it when the clocks go back. I'm grateful I don't have to do it for 6 months of the year.

Effect and affect confuse me every time.

I tell myself that the near side of the road is the side that is more near the vehicle (so the left in the UK).
