Really basic stuff I just can’t remember

Gross and Net. I can never remember which one relates to which figure and it’s especially annoying as I quite often have to discuss net and gross figures with clients. I don’t know why, I could check a thousand times and still never remember.

Same with Verbs, nouns, etc, which one is which FFS!

There are definitely other things but I’ve forgotten those too.

Words I struggle with are restaurant and bureaucracy.

I can never remember which is supposed to be bad/good - saturated and unsaturated fats.

I’m generally quite good at spelling but I can never remember how to spell embarrassing or necessary.

We were taught it's one collar two sleeves for necessary.

Devilsmommy · 19/07/2024 07:33

No gross is what's after tax. Net is everything before

Other way round!

I was taught 2 ships on 1 sea

I struggle to say the word catastrophise - can never quite remember where the “esses” and “tees” are

I didn’t not know which is the near side and which is the off side of a car. I always resort to driver’s side and passenger side.

This is mine- can never remember which one is which. I say driver’s and passenger’s side.

I also can’t remember how to reset the oven clock - we’ve had it for 9 years. It’s about 3 steps but I mess it up each time if I don’t get the instructions out.

"There are definitely other things but I’ve forgotten those too." ... This made me laugh op 😄

I think most people have little blind spots, places where their brain just won't engage in the right way to retain the information. Gross and net I know and can use but I need half a second to think about - see also credit and debit.

The word 'definitely'. I've never struggled with spelling generally (<waits for someone to find a mistake in my post>😆), but there is something about it, the 'e's and 'i's perhaps, I always have to double check and say it to myself.

Setting the oven clock. Now that is definitely beyond my capabilities!

I think of finite being in the middle of definitely.

I have a mental block with the word occasion and always misspell it and allow autocorrect to do it's thing.

I also get stuck on principle versus principal too.

DurtBurd · 19/07/2024 09:11

I have an issue with phone scrolling too, swiping up or down, left or right- they just don't make any sense to me.

Port and Starboard in a ship?

Port and Starboard in a ship?

Ah ha.

Port is left which is red. So use the phrase "no red port left".

So starboard will be green and right.

PassingStranger · 19/07/2024 09:16

Port and Starboard in a ship?

You pass port to the left.
(Its from the perspective of the captain)

I can't do time zones at all.

Even when I not flying, someone will say I'm eastern time shall we have the meeting at xxx and my brain just melts.

I have to google every single time.

Get my flying and I really can't comprehend the changes, it just won't go in!

Kai125 · 19/07/2024 09:28

I can never remember how many days are in a month. Never.

I know there is a rhyme which I can't remember either and something to do with fingers which again ... I can never remember.

It's really annoying.

Oh yes me too! My brain totally can't handle this.

Also inside and outside lanes on the motorway (thankfully that's not how they refer to them in driving lessons any more)

Same here. I'm working with quite a few different US clients at the moment and I always had to google the time in the different places.

I've got them on the world clock on my phone now, which helps.

Itiswhysofew · 19/07/2024 09:47

Left and right for me. If I'm ever stopped and asked directions, I have a little panic afterwards, in case I've sent them in the wrong directionGrin. When I was a kid, there was a trend of left & right printed on trainers, and I loved mine. Wish I'd hung on to them.

My memory is shot, generally these days. Any tips for improving it?

paradisecircus · 19/07/2024 09:50

The spelling of the word (checks it) PRIVILEGE, and the pronunciation of 'eligible'.

Evolutionarygoals · 19/07/2024 09:56

I really struggle to distinguish cars. Even finding my own in a car park can be a problem - I have to check the licence plate to be sure. Which is weird, because I'm quite good at bird and some plant id

Evolutionarygoals · 19/07/2024 09:57

I'm also dyslexic btw (and have problems with all the spelling and left Vs right already discussed on this thread)

Allmarbleslost · 19/07/2024 10:02

Inside and outside lane on a motorway. No idea which is which despite having it explained to me several times. I think I didn't agree with the explanation 😂

EBearhug · 19/07/2024 10:10

Iknow the difference between it's and its. Bloody autocorrect doesn't...

I do not know which is the inside or outside lane.
I do know the difference between nearside and offside, but found it very confusing when driving on t'other side of the road in Germany. I am much more likely to refer to passenger side and driver side.

ThisNoisyTealLurker · 19/07/2024 10:14

I have issues remembering stuff like this but never with remembering things that I find interesting. I think that’s the issue, if it’s boring and I don’t give a shit then my brain just chucks the information out again!
