Does it bother you when you see people doing this? If so, why?

PLEASE EVERYONE DO NOT DO YOUR EYEMAKEUP ON THE TRAIN WITH A MASCARA WAND.
FRIEND WAS SEVERELY INJURED NEARLY BLINDED WHEN TRAIN STOPPED SUDDENLY AND WAND WENT INTO HER EYBALL.

because I know this it makes me feel sick when I see women using mascara wands on trains. they are very hard and sharp and some of them are fairly pointed

Although i guess the train could crash as well

I don't like it.

I personally believe that personal grooming should be kept to the privacy of your own home. I can't really tell you why I find it icky. It just is.
I think maybe some of it is that I find it a bit "look at me!" Like, "I'm so busy and important, I didn't have a single moment to do this at home, so I'll do it now and you can all sit there and think about how pretty I am and how busy I must be!"

You’re really looking at it too deeply as I can assure you not one of those has ever crossed my mind as I do my slap on the train to use the time I’d just be staring at my phone or out the window

So if it's just 5 mins, can't you get up 5 mins earlier?

Why though?

RivkaTheBold · 16/07/2024 17:07

I love watching it. Some of you woman are absolute wizards with it. Unrecognisable from when you got on.

I'd be happier if those people who are too lazy to walk with their children to school did that and spared those who have to travel longer distances the delays from their usually poor driving.

CoffeeCantata · 16/07/2024 17:25

Yes it does.

I feel I'm being forced against my will into an intimate situation with the person doing their make-up. It's rude and inconsiderate - and rather entitled.

Teeth-cleaning, making up, hair-doing etc are all very personal routines and I'm not comfortable doing them in front of others (except my very closest relations) and I don't know where to look when people subject me to theirs.

OP asked for views, and that's mine.

Zanatdy · 16/07/2024 17:29

Yeah I find it too much, it’s something you do before leaving the house, or go to the ladies when arriving at work. No-one really wants to sit next to someone doing a full make up routine

Linlithgow · 16/07/2024 17:35

I always do this when travelling to London, my train leaves at 6am and I'm on there for a couple of hours... didn't realise it bothered people 😵‍💫

AngeloMysterioso · 16/07/2024 17:40

I always used to do mine on my commute. I see it as a rather sensible use of time personally. Why make myself get up earlier to do it at home when I had roughly half an hour of otherwise dead time on the tube? I’d rather have the extra sleep! And I always had wet wipes and sanitizer to clean my hands with afterwards.

Spectacularly missing the point but then self-righteous people on MN always do!

I already get up very early, have hugely hectic mornings that don't always go to plan but should also be building time in to accommodate the unnecessarily judgemental sensitivities of random people on the train who don't even know why they don't like it and are in no way affected? I'm discreet and travel from a semi rural station with not loads of others around. But their comfort is more important than mine for no discernable reason? Okay then 🙄.

MillshakePickle · 16/07/2024 17:51

I saw someone doing their make up on a packed 07.28 to London Waterloo, actually made me smile.

My first thought was covid is a distance memory. It was nice to see something from before times.

I used to do mine on the train, but have since worked it into my morning routine and feel fresher and less hassled with 20 mins less sleep and full face paint on.

I'd prefer someone doing make up to nails or listening to a dull podcast or hearing about other people's weekends.

Agree with you. Its dead time so use it to do something useful like makeup.

Honestly im shocked how many are so bothered by something that doesn’t affect them at all. Are they as bothered by someone reading or watching a movie on the train? After all you could do both of those at home

5128gap · 16/07/2024 18:27

No. If I can manage it discreetly i enjoy watching. Very interesting to observe other women's routines and see the transformations. But I'm nosy like that.

But that's not a reasonable analogy. Watching TV or a film can be a social activity and not personal or intimate in the same way.

I don't want to find myself in what is effectively someone's boudoir while making the morning commute! It's really bad manners to make other people endure your personal grooming routines.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 16/07/2024 19:21

Im a woman and i wear make up but i could not apply it in public...im not sure why i just think its better done at home in private...i cringe when i see other women doing theirs in public.

Your pearl clutching is hilarious.

It’s make up FFS, not masturbating or bikini waxing!

Putting on makeup can be social. Have you been in a department store? A beauty salon? Girls get together and do makeovers.

SoozyWoozy5 · 16/07/2024 20:41

Yes, it bothers me. You did ask..

camelfinger · 16/07/2024 20:43

Doesn’t bother me, I’m always impressed with how well people do it, and so quickly.

SwedishEdith · 16/07/2024 20:47

Oh, I love watching people put their makeup on in public. I love watching the transformation and seeing what they and if I can pick up any tips. I'd never do it myself as I'd feel cack-handed. I've been wearing make up nearly every day for over 40 years and yet, other than lipstick, I still feel awkward applying in public. Like I still do it wrong.

liverburd1 · 16/07/2024 20:50

For everyone saying it's intimate/private, does that make the make up counters in busy department stores the equivalent of a public orgy?? Sex club in the middle of the high street on a Saturday afternoon?

Different people, different standards of behaviour - who knew?

You do you and I'll do me, and I know which I'd rather be!

IdontlikePinaColada · 16/07/2024 21:20

So long as you don't get tetchy while I watch the performance, then go for it.
