To do my make up on the train?

Does it bother you when you see people doing this? If so, why?

Doesn’t bother me. Just sounds stressful. I can do mine at home in 20/25 mins but with a cuppa and the telly. Not sure I could manage without running water. Wouldn’t want to lug around my foundation, primer etc.

Pherian · 17/07/2024 10:47

I don't tend to notice or care about what other people are doing in general. So I say if you want to put your makeup on then crack on. It harms no one.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 17/07/2024 10:55

It always seems to me like a 'look at me' kind of activity.

Shit... do I need to stop doing this too?

I saw a very drunk woman dry shave her armpits on a Friday night train. 😂

YOYOK · 17/07/2024 11:07

I have to admit, I am intrigued by people who can do lovely make up on a jerky train. I would definitely poke myself in the eye!
It doesn’t bother me as long as they’re not spraying anything in my direction.

I think it’s strange that people can’t get up 20 minutes earlier to do it at home before they leave. Don’t want to be horrible, but I feel like it’s very attention seeking - knowing everyone is going to be staring at you whilst doing it. Even people who are going from one place to another and need to ‘get ready’, why are they using a train and not a public bathroom? There’s someone I know who claim they cannot work because of ‘anxiety’ but does a full face of makeup on the train whilst recording themselves doing it - that’s peak wanting to draw attention to yourself

It's not something I would ever consider doing, just as I wouldn't eat in the street. That's more a question of my own upbringing.

But I also try not to be censorious about the behaviour of others. If the behaviour is sufficiently anti-social (and it's safe to do so) I would openly take issue with it rather than sitting there with a cat's bum face and looking daggers as so many British people do. If a person's cosmetic practices were encroaching on my comfort I'd move. I don't think in these circumstances it's reasonable to ask them to stop, and likely unproductive, as I doubt they would comply.

As with most things context matters. On a packed train, slapping on cosmetics in close proximity to others where products might easily spill onto their clothes is anti-social. The situation a PP described upthread, with a woman taking over an entire four-seater table as her personal dressing table, also anti-social. In a quiet train where neither of these things would matter I'd be getting on with my book and doubt I'd notice.

Two rare commodities are needed in situations like these: basic judgement and good old-fashioned common sense.

Well said.

Everyone?

Most people are more absorbed with their own sh-t than staring at others.

I think it’s self-absorbed to assume everyone is paying attention to you.

I also think it strange that some can’t understand that there are circumstances where people can’t do their make-up at home so do it on the train.

Getting up 20 mints early doesn’t do anything if your face sweats and/or condensation gathers easily on your face and you are walking a distance to public transport.

I know the difference. There was a thread on here a few weeks back about how bad make up is. The attitudes were disgusting, did you see it?

No.
I have to seen any disgusting attitudes on this thread though.

MaltipooMama · 17/07/2024 12:59

I wouldn't be remotely bothered! I see it all the time and never caused me any offence whatsoever

Yes. It's rank

GoodHeavens99 · 17/07/2024 13:06

That might be an overreaction.

Bin juice is rank. Not someone applying some mascara.

Yep. Shaving their legs on train - rank. Putting on a bit of lippy - really really not

Ooh - she sounds irresistable!

CoffeeCantata · 17/07/2024 13:13

I saw a group of teenage boys spraying Lynx, or similar, at their armpits...through their shirts. It wasn't a pleasant sight - and it set off my sinuses - but it was very funny.

Personal hygiene and laundry issues sorted!

juice92 · 17/07/2024 13:22

As long as you are self contained (ie not taking up two seats with your stuff on a rush hour train) you are not spilling cosmetics everywhere, and you're not getting setting spray all over someone else, then I have no issues with it. I have done my makeup on the train a few times, like if I've missed my alarm or have a 5am train to catch so I'm not against it

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 17/07/2024 17:05

In the compartment next to me there’s currently a young woman doing her makeup. I’m (quietly) impressed by her steady hands! Two seats over is a young lad talking quite loudly on the phone. And now he’s singing and complaining that the person he’s talking to apparently doesn’t want to join him.
He also has his feet / shoes on the seat.

I know which one I find more annoying and inconsiderate!
