To do my make up on the train?

Does it bother you when you see people doing this? If so, why?

I can understand and don't mind seeing people doing a quick tidy up - to make sure you look OK for when you arrive at your destination. Especially if its a rubbish day weather wise and your appearance might have suffered on your way to the train/ bus.

But I can't stand seeing women spending absolutely ages doing the full long and complicated makeup routine that must be their norm. I know this is a me problem btw. They just look so self absorbed, totally oblivious that they are in a public, and therefore social situation.

I also think really why is it considered necessary to hide behind so much camouflage.

I know some men do wear make up but I've yet to see one on a train/ bus applying his makeup. Yet another thing they don't have to add to their " to do" list. They manage to get through the day " au naturalle" .

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 16/07/2024 11:58

I used to do it, although it was a ten minute affair! Why not.

As a man, I have to ask you, wouldn't you want no one to see you without make-up, if you're going to paint you face at all? As in, why does it not matter if commuters see you make-up free, but the rest of the world can't?

I don’t care who sees me without make up but my previous role back when I commuted involved being client facing meeting with large corporate clients on a daily basis and my face being done was part of my professional image just as much as my work attire.

I don’t care about randoms on the train they weren’t part of my professional life

This is mad. She's just touching up her makeup, it's not attention seeking. Do people think like this? My mindset is really more basic.... I haven't got up on time.

No, she wasn´t touching up her make up, she was applying a full face of make up from scratch, with everyone trying to have a conversation over her applying 20 brushes, creams and eyeliners. So no, not mad, more annoying, on her part.

desperatedaysareover · 16/07/2024 12:01

I quite like watching people apply makeup, especially if they’re giving it the full five-nil, contouring and curling and all that, I do draw the line at vigorous hairbrushing (we were taught brushing your hair in public was bad manners, getting a full face on was never mentioned, I doubt it would have been okay) and applying roll-on deodorant. All of that happened at the breakfast table in a hotel last summer, a girl in her late teens. That was off-putting.

‘wouldn’t you want no one to see you without makeup on’
No. Why would you assume that? Most women are not embarrassed or afraid of being seen by random men without makeup.
They can be seen by people without makeup, hence leaving the house with no makeup, but choose to out it on for work or their day for a whole array of reasons.

Sorry to break it to you, but women actually aren’t doing things for your validation.

I should hope they aren't, because I'm gay and it to say it would be wasted on me is an understatement.

What I was asking (before you turned it into something it wasn't, bearing in mind the person I asked it of seemed to grasp it easily enough) is if you're going to make an effort for the world, does it not need to be for all of the world, rather than some of it?

As in, I don't leave the house looking like anything less than how I'm prepared for the world to see me that day, commuters or otherwise. If I'm scruffy because I'm going to the tip, so be it. If I'm dressed up, I'll leave home accordingly. Etc.

What on earth do you mean

with everyone trying to have a conversation over her applying 20 brushes, creams and eyeliners.

Applying makeup is silent.

You know perfectly well what I mean...

You've seen people holding handrails then doing their make up. Then you've seen the same people a few days later, not only with spots, but audibly wondering why they have spots?

Yep, exactly that!

No I don't. That's why I've asked you a question...

Startingagainandagain · 16/07/2024 12:17

The only thing I would do is put some lipstick on while on a train/the tube.

I don't want to pock myself in the eye if the carriage makes a sudden stop...

socks1107 · 16/07/2024 12:17

I don't like it, I set my alarm at a time to factor that part of my routine in every morning.
A lady sat next to me last year doing her full routine and flicked foundation/ powder all over my shoulder and clean top.
Just do it at home I don't see how hard that is

Allfur · 16/07/2024 12:34

It feels kinda intimate to me, not a big fan, but not sure why you ask opinions given you couldn't care less

Borborygmus · 16/07/2024 12:51

I once sat opposite a girl on a train who was doing her makeup. Amongst other things she spent a long while seemingly separating her eyelashes with a needle, I've no idea why! It did seem somewhat reckless though.

Well they clearly don’t understand what ablutions actually means.

It can be applied to the whole process of washing and other preparations

Westfacing · 16/07/2024 13:06

Putting on a bit of mascara or lipstick is one thing, but spreading out your wares, including huge brushes to put on powdery things that were flying everywhere is another! And no one needs to see eyebrow plucking and nail clipping - do it at home!

I'm not bothered if you do your make up in the train.

However, if you were the woman hogging the four seater on the train to Chester, by spreading the contents of your makeup bag all over the table then yes, I judged you as selfish and unreasonable.

Gingerdancedbackwards · 16/07/2024 13:08

FictionalCharacter · 16/07/2024 11:42

Putting makeup on isn’t ablutions.

See previous post.

Course it’s lazy. It’s a cultural norm to get ready at home in private. Why not get dressed out of your pjs on the train too? Brush your teeth into a cup? Getting ready on a train isn’t good ‘time management’ 😂

It is when it’s saving you time in the morning 😂 why does it offend you so much? Weird.

DrCoconut · 16/07/2024 13:17

Makeup doesn't bother me but spraying perfume, deodorant etc on public transport is really antisocial as it makes some people really ill.

SamW98 · 16/07/2024 13:19

PuddlesPityParty · 16/07/2024 13:14

Agree. It’s very good time management using dead time to do something constructive.

And people comparing it to not getting dressed or cleaning your teeth in the train - ridiculous!

It doesn’t bother me what anyone does on their commute that doesn’t affect my life. Play with your phone, read a book, do your slap - seriously who really cares!

JamSandle · 16/07/2024 13:20

I'm more annoyed by people playing music and videos out loud on phones.

kitsuneghost · 16/07/2024 13:20

I just find it funny. Not offensive

Ditto plus making endless calls no one is interested in listening to or eating hot food.

@Nanny0gg, I was also born in the 50s and felt quite cheeky when I ate a cookie in the street yesterday 😂 We used to get detention if spotted eating in the street while in uniform.

Don't tell me you still sit with your legs neatly crossed at the ankles and feign fascination with anything a man says?!

Well I certainly don't sit with my legs spread!

And there was never an expectation that I had to feign fascination with anything let alone a man speaking!!
