To do my make up on the train?

Does it bother you when you see people doing this? If so, why?

OP posts:
Flopsy145 · 16/07/2024 10:13

It wouldn't bother me, as long as the person wasn't spraying loads of stuff or getting make up all over the seats. If they weren't doing this I would probably not even notice what they were doing

Apollo365 · 16/07/2024 10:14

I’d rather people quietly doing their make up than the other weird stuff people get up to on the train 😂

FangsForTheMemory · 16/07/2024 10:15

It’s tacky to do personal care in public. I won’t even comb my hair in public.

HideousKinky · 16/07/2024 10:16

As a general rule, if it's usually done in a bathroom, it shouldn't be done in public

TangentsPlease · 16/07/2024 10:17

I do it! I have so much going on in my life, every minute at home is precious - I'd rather use the 25 mins of train time well so it's not wasted dead time.

Don't understand why it riles people up, honestly. It's not unhygienic if my mascara comes out of my bag, goes onto my own eyelashes and then back into my bag... it's not like I'm wiping mascara on the seats or smearing my face onto tube poles!

Spidey66 · 16/07/2024 10:20

I find it irritating, though have maybe redone my lippy on the train . Get up earlier!

The worst was some woman applying nail polish on a crowded tube. It stunk! I was tempted to 'accidentally ' knock her arm and spill her nail polish iver her smart work clothes.

Sallyh87 · 16/07/2024 10:50

Can’t really see what’s it’s an issue. Unless it’s spraying perfume, it doesn’t impact anyone else.

Other train behaviours do bother me, like the man standing basically pressed against me on the tube recently eating a Greggs steak bake.

Colacao · 16/07/2024 10:53

I’m always fascinated by women doing their makeup on the bus. For one thing, it takes a fair bit of skill and I like seeing what techniques they’re using and which products. It doesn’t bother me generally. It can be a bit annoying if someone is sitting beside you constantly moving and jostling but that’s public transport.
There was a teacher in college who used to come up from the floor below to use the bathrooms in the mornings to brush her teeth, wash her face, use skincare products, do full makeup, brush her hair and put it up and spray on hairspray, deodorant and perfume. I thought that was a bit odd.

liverburd1 · 16/07/2024 08:11

Unhygenic??? 😂😂😂😂

Yes. I've seen people holding onto handrails before blending foundation with their fingertips. Then wonder why they get spots... or worse!

SamW98 · 16/07/2024 11:14

Doesn’t bother me at all. I used to due my foundation at home then finish my face on the train. I was sitting on there for 30 minutes why not use that time?

Really doesn’t bother me seeing anyone else do it.

CalishataFolkart · 16/07/2024 11:31

Singersong · 16/07/2024 08:35

Intimate? 😂 How?

OP just in case you're wondering, on Mumsnet they highly suggest that you don't even breathe on a train.

Maybe it’s the dichotomy of:-

  1. Makeup being used to conceal imperfections and/or look natural, in which case it feels like we’ve seen something private, like putting on supportwear
  2. Makeup being used as decoration - fun and joyful but a bit reminiscent of face painting (a pp up thread compared it to children colouring in) so maybe a wee bit childish

Women can and should use makeup exactly how they want, but the application gives a peep behind the magic which spoils the illusion.

As far as I’m concerned crack on though, this is just a theory as to why some people might find it uncomfortable.

Mouk · 16/07/2024 11:32

Once they're not spraying anything, I'm not bothered at all.

Persiancouscous · 16/07/2024 11:36

Heyheyitsanotherday · 16/07/2024 08:27

Surely it’s no different to kids colouring in a colouring book…. I’d just be colouring in my face 😂 good use of time if you ask me 😂😂

😂😂

DickEmery · 16/07/2024 11:37

It has no impact on me whatsoever so, no, it doesn't bother me.

That's OK, then. I usually do make up and hair in the bedroom.

FateReset · 16/07/2024 11:40

I find it off putting and interesting all at once 😆

The way women look at their face/up nose/pull down eyelids from all angles to view their reflection, apparently oblivious to people watching this rather private act performed in the open.

I don't like powder dusting over me or perfume sprayed nearby, or hair flicking at me.

I think it's fine to discreetly put on lipstick or dab a bit of blush onto cheeks with your finger, not so much a full face.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/07/2024 11:41

Jumpingthruhoops · 16/07/2024 11:11

You've seen people holding handrails then doing their make up. Then you've seen the same people a few days later, not only with spots, but audibly wondering why they have spots?

Ksqordssvimy · 16/07/2024 11:42

I don't get the issue at all. I wouldn't spray perfume or paint nails but anything else, I don't care. I don't really get why so many people do.

FictionalCharacter · 16/07/2024 11:42

HowIrresponsible · 16/07/2024 08:08

Yes. Do it before you leave the house or when you get to work.

It's just unhygienic and I don't want to see someone doing their morning ablutions on public transport.

Putting makeup on isn’t ablutions.

As a man, I have to ask you, wouldn't you want no one to see you without make-up, if you're going to paint you face at all? As in, why does it not matter if commuters see you make-up free, but the rest of the world can't?

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 16/07/2024 11:44

It doesn't bother me as long as they aren't taking up more than their fair space (e.g. one seat and part of a table), and they aren't making mess.

Ksqordssvimy · 16/07/2024 11:45

That's the dream but I'm incredibly lazy and I prefer extra time in bed to be honest

Katiesaidthat · 16/07/2024 11:49

When I see that I just think they are attention seekers, and I wear make up, so not averse to it. A friend of a friend used to do this, we would meet up, all sat around a table and she would whip her make up and start to apply it, even foundation. I did say to her why do you bother, we already know what you look like...she never did it when I was there again. Strange.

This is mad. She's just touching up her makeup, it's not attention seeking. Do people think like this? My mindset is really more basic.... I haven't got up on time.

‘wouldn’t you want no one to see you without makeup on’
No. Why would you assume that? Most women are not embarrassed or afraid of being seen by random men without makeup.
They can be seen by people without makeup, hence leaving the house with no makeup, but choose to out it on for work or their day for a whole array of reasons.

Sorry to break it to you, but women actually aren’t doing things for your validation.
