Does it bother you when you see people doing this? If so, why?

OP posts:

Yes. Do it before you leave the house or when you get to work.

It's just unhygienic and I don't want to see someone doing their morning ablutions on public transport.

Unhygienic? How?

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 16/07/2024 08:23

How do people get a seat on a train in order to do this!?
For me, if it involves sprays, powders and creams no, because of the mess. Lippy, eyeliner, mascara, fine.

purplemunkey · 16/07/2024 08:24

I don’t commute by train anymore, but this used to annoy me. I don’t know why really, so probably unreasonably so!

Perhaps because it feels like something people usually do in their own bathrooms/bedrooms. I wouldn’t want to see someone brushing their teeth/cutting their nails/clearing out their ears etc either. I know it’s not the same though. Can’t really explain it. Crack on I’d say 😄

barnefri · 16/07/2024 08:25

I don't care about someone applying lipstick or powdering their nose, but applying a whole face of makeup just gives me the heebie jeebies.

I hate to see someone applying foundation or eyeshadow with fingers, as that is unhygienic. Trains are already dirty places, and I don't want to think about their risk of eye infections or where they're wiping their fingers afterwards.

I know it's my problem though, and I'll move seat (or carriage) to avoid seeing it, if I can.

JennyBeanR · 16/07/2024 08:27

I'm shocked that anyone would care tbh

Heyheyitsanotherday · 16/07/2024 08:27

Surely it’s no different to kids colouring in a colouring book…. I’d just be colouring in my face 😂 good use of time if you ask me 😂😂

willWillSmithsmith · 16/07/2024 08:27

I don’t think it would bother me, I’m usually too fixed on my phone on trains to notice anything.

ZenNudist · 16/07/2024 08:28

I dont know why it looks odd. I've never thought about it but I am slightly judging. Why not do it in a toilet? I guess I just assume a person is lazy disorganised and vain if you see them doing it in the morning. If I see them doing it in the evening I assume they are going to something where they need to look nice coming from somewhere where make up not needed. So then I assume they are busy and have a life! It still looks a bit lacking in class.

I can't see how my particular routine is unhygienic at all (no spritz or spray!) and I think life is already busy and stressful to have to worry about keeping up appearances...
God forbid someone sees the before and after transformation in public?

The hate all feels very 1950s to me. Not sure it's any difference to eating a sandwich on the train? ('Oh god forbid, eat your food in private!)

See, I think doing your make up in public feels very 1950s. Like these sort of photos

When I used to commute by train there were loads of women doing their makeup, me amongst them!

I was travelling a long journey about 2 years ago and there was a lady who did the whole routine - face mask, hair in the soft overnight curl roller thing, lip mask, the works! She looked amazing when she was ready and it kept me entertained! She had a little light up mirror and everything, it was fab!

I think so long as you don't use any spray products that can go on other people it's fine! No difference from eating a sandwich really!

steelingmyself · 16/07/2024 08:32

I used to do this a lot when I was up early (5am) for a long train journey straight into something work related getting off the train.

The alternative was a face full of melted make up, or none, on a day I'd otherwise look quite tired!

AddictedToBooks · 16/07/2024 08:32

It honestly wouldn't bother me if someone on a train did their makeup. I don't know how rushed they've been leaving home or whether they have to walk straight into a meeting after their journey - none of my business.

I'd rather have someone next to me doing their makeup, than someone being loud on a phone/with loud headphones or with their feet up on the seat.

neverbeenskiing · 16/07/2024 08:34

Personally I couldn't care less what people do on the train as long as they're not being loud or encroaching on others personal space. I find it interesting people saying make up should only be applied at home, almost like its something to be ashamed of. We know that lots of women wear make up so why the need for secrecy? Are we all supposed to pretend that we've just woken up looking beautified?

Singersong · 16/07/2024 08:35

redfacebigdisgrace · 16/07/2024 08:16

I don’t like it. It’s too intimate.

Intimate? 😂 How?

OP just in case you're wondering, on Mumsnet they highly suggest that you don't even breathe on a train.

🤮 I'm just imagining someone trying to cut their nails on the train!

I have been on one once where girls were painting their nails which annoyed me because of the smell (and how much trains jostle! It was stressing me out thinking how the varnish wouldn't be smooth 😅)

So just get on with it? It's noone else's business - as you say, no sprays.

If people don't want to look they can read a book. If they don't want to listen they can put in earplugs.

stclair · 16/07/2024 08:37

I would never do it but I like watching other women putting it on out the corner of my eye. Might get some tips! Although the lady I saw plucking chin hairs on the Tube was a little too much

Are you dizzy making those logical somersaults?

This is so curious to me! It really bothers people but I just can't understand? I feel like a bit of a leper as I sit here applying concealer...

I’d be embarrassed to be doing that, but good luck to you if it doesn’t bother you.

GinAndBeerIt · 16/07/2024 08:38

I neither mind nor care.
I don't use trains very often, but the last time I did, a young woman sat next to me and began to apply some make-up, that led to us chatting about all kinds of things, including her upcoming wedding, which made the journey go much quicker.
I hope she had a lovely wedding day and is still happily married.
Funny where a dab of lippy and mascara can take you.
London to York in our case.

LadyCrumpet · 16/07/2024 08:38

Nothing wrong with it IMO. I used to have to get a 5.50am train. The train was empty when I got on at the first stop. I saved those precious minutes in bed and used to put my make-up on on the train. used to take 10 mins. Why wouldn't I? Nothing unhygenic at all about that.

Didimum · 16/07/2024 08:39

Doesn’t bother me at all. I think people who get up in arms about it need to get a life personally. The things that bother me on a train a very loud conversations, playing phones out loud or putting feet on the seats.

If you're not worried about keeping up appearances then why wear make up in the first place?

Because she wants to?

Okayornot · 16/07/2024 08:41

I do it. I have a long commute which means I have to get up very early and don't waste time before I leave the house.
My makeup consists of a very few products though (none of them sprays) not sure I'd do it if I wanted a full face of contour.

I really hate it when people file their nails on the train. Just gross.
