To do beans on toast once a week?

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:39

Doing a different work pattern soon and two nights a week will be a lot of pressure to pick up DCs (infant age) from after school, feed them and not end up putting to bed too late.

I can't cook from scratch these nights and realistically don't think I'll be organised enough to batch cook for both nights.

AIBU to give my kids beans on toast every week for one evening meal? I know it's UPF but at least it's some kind of veg and very quick. They'll be having a hot lunch at school and are pretty good at eating it.

I think you should give them a cheese and bean toastie made with a toastie machine (called something like that) with an apple and milk

CookieCrumbles23 · 13/07/2024 01:07

OP, as long as you make the beans on toast from scratch each week, it’s fine.

And I mean from scratch!! So you must grow your own beans in your garden and bake your own bread. Also, you must churn your own butter if you wish to have that too. Really straight forward stuff and absolutely no excuses. Don’t want those bloody UFO’s in your kids food 🛸

OP, my kids favourite night of week is frozen pizza night on a Wednesday. Don’t give it a second thought my luv.

Another 5 minutes meal is an omelette. My teen has an omelette on Tuesday before karate as we have to be there early and he doesn't get home from college until late.

I bloody love beans on toast! I actually am amazed I’ve not even thought of including it! One of my faves!

Marblessolveeverything · 13/07/2024 01:27

Mine would have preferred toasties and still have a hankering for them. Whatever works. Just be cautious they may get sick of them so have an easy plan B.

Strangerthanfictions · 13/07/2024 01:27

Ideal wee meal, add cheese and some crudités to make it a bit extra. I give my kids baked potatoes with cheese on beans a few times a month, beans have a lot of fibre!

I find slow cooker food very depressing. I'm not sure why, but I can never stomach it. Also mornings are Huge rush as it is!

None of my kids will eat stir fry.

I know what you mean. A friend of ours invites us to lunch sometimes. He always ‘does a casserole’ in the slow cooker. No matter what the ingredients are, they all taste very similar.

murasaki · 13/07/2024 01:38

I don't like baked beans but they are a totally acceptable meal on toast. For other people, some of whom i live with! Don't worry.

Ilovecleaning · 13/07/2024 01:48

Add a little grated cheese or a scrambled egg now and again? But beans on toast once a week is fine.
You’re obviously doing a good job as a parent if this worries you a little. Some parents feed their kids shite on a daily basis and don’t bat an eyelid.

Willyoujustbequiet · 13/07/2024 01:48

Organic baked beans. Waitrose does them.

I don't see why anyone objects to beans when surely the bread is UPF?

Now I'm hungry.

Vary it a bit. Give them Hoops on toast once in a while 😂

Definitely!

Of course it’s fine

i would sometimes make it with garlic bread to give it a more sophisticated flair 😊

I add little cubes of cheese so they have just started to melt when eating

with a friend egg it’s a delicious quick mea

If in doubt, cut up some cucumber and stick on the side of the plate... positively virtuous

I can't tell if this is a joke but at least it's proved that there's never a good MN batshit food thread without reference to the 'cucumber antidote' where you can assuage your guilt at failing to meet MN nutritional standards by randomly adding cucumber to what you've served despite it not going with the rest of the meal.

spikeandbuffy · 13/07/2024 02:33

I reckon this would be nice with beans and still quick (could leave out the mustard)

Beans on toast as a meal is only OK if off-set by a massive salad. Gavel.

It is a salad. A hot bean salad. With one big crouton underneath it. Call it "opposite salad".

"Might I suggest our Salade Branstonnaise? It's selected white haricot beans, blanched then steamed in a lightly-spiced but rich tomato dressing to achieve the perfect tenderness, heated and slightly reduced to enhance the flavours, and further seasoned to your preferences by our chefs, served atop individually-prepared pain grillé au beurre croutons. With some cheese if you fancy."

SitBackAndRewind · 13/07/2024 03:11

My husbands speciality is Cheesy Beans Delux

Sourdough
Layer of cheese and ham
beans
bit more grated cheese

Add some Tabasco sauce, maybe not for the DC

We love it 😊

SeatonCarew · 13/07/2024 03:12

It's fine OP. Cheese and tomato on toast is lush too.

Emmanuelll · 13/07/2024 03:16

What is all this 'UPF' nonsense? Some of you are lucky not to have fussy, autistic kids that's all I can say.

We put grated cheese and Worcestershire sauce on top of our beans on toast.

ClawedUkelele · 13/07/2024 03:22

I love beans on toast and love jazzing up the beans 😂

Sometimes I fry up some onions and garlic and maybe some other finely-chopped veg (mushrooms, courgettes, bell peppers), and chuck the beans in with some spices (maybe some paprika or chilli powder).

I've also been known to add some bourbon and then smoke the beans using a handheld wood smoker.

Plain old beans and cheese on toast is still great, though.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 13/07/2024 03:32

dh batch cooks our beans and i freeze them in meal sized portions.
we have beans 4X per month i would say for any of the 3 meals.

Mukirinessly · 13/07/2024 03:33

I flippin love beans on toast. I want to eat it right this minute.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/07/2024 03:38

I'd put a soft poached egg on top. 😋
