To do beans on toast once a week?

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:39

Doing a different work pattern soon and two nights a week will be a lot of pressure to pick up DCs (infant age) from after school, feed them and not end up putting to bed too late.

I can't cook from scratch these nights and realistically don't think I'll be organised enough to batch cook for both nights.

AIBU to give my kids beans on toast every week for one evening meal? I know it's UPF but at least it's some kind of veg and very quick. They'll be having a hot lunch at school and are pretty good at eating it.

I love beans on toast. I have it 2-3 times a week and have done for 53 years and I’m still going strong.
Slow cookers have their place but my mind is slightly blown by people who have time to set them going before work.
There are loads of easy meals you can chuck together in under 10 minutes but beans on toast can be done in under 3 minutes and you don’t have to worry about having them in. There are always beans.
If you feel you need extra veg, a spoonful of chopped onion from the freezer is nice and barely adds 10 seconds to the whole operation.

Lovemycat2023 · 12/07/2024 23:44

Beans on toast is a treat, and the only question is whether you have grated cheese on top too! I did go through a hoops phase, but they are a bit soggy.

wintersgold · 12/07/2024 23:47

Of course, totally normal (provided your kids actually like it! I hate the thought of beans on toast but sounds like thats just me)

Chopped onions?
Fried off presumably? (🤞)

Needmorelego · 12/07/2024 23:47

@Andthereitis oooh I've never thought to put cheese UNDER the hoops. That's revolutionary.
@PadstowGirl I've never tried potato waffles in a toaster but I have had them cooked on a BBQ which was good.

Moonshine5 · 12/07/2024 23:49

Personally I wouldn't but if it ticks all your boxes why not

Notthatcatagain · 12/07/2024 23:50

We like beans on toast with some grated cheese. If we are feeling posh we have the beans that come with little sausages in the tin. You need to add an extra little tin of beans though otherwise there's not enough for 2. I'm 71 and the OM 79 so the UPFs are clearly not doing us much harm. Same topping is also great on a jacket spud (we like lots of extra butter and salt too)

Needmorelego · 12/07/2024 23:50

I also like the tinned pasta shapes you get that are in the shape of whatever the popular kids character is (still seems to be Peppa Pig mostly available).
If I have them on toast I just call it having "shapes on toast".

ZenNudist · 12/07/2024 23:51

I do baked potato and cheese or/and coselaw pretty much every Friday in the winter.

My go to quick cook meal is the fresh tortellini with tomato sauce.

Beans once a week is fine.

ODFOx · 12/07/2024 23:52

If it works and they like it then why not?
My only concern would be feeding the same thing so frequently that they go off it; but appreciate that my DC weren't typical 😀.

I ruined our toaster cooking potato waffles in it. They melted 🤯

Nooo! Toaster must have been at fault. Get a new one.

Beans on toast
Cheese on toast
Cheese on toast with beans on top
Beans on toast with cheese on top
Scrambled egg on toast
Grilled tomatoes on toast
Cheese on toast with ham under the cheese
cheese on toast with sliced tomato under or over the cheese
All of the above but substitute potato waffle for toast
All of the above but make sure you add marmite to the toast - unless there’s tomatoes or ham, then it’s wrong.

Quality easy food, all of them. I do always do it with granary bread because I much prefer it and it’s nice and nubbly. And none of them require you to try to do food prep in the morning (I adore cooking but NOT before I run off to work!).

spikeandbuffy · 12/07/2024 23:54

YABU

It needs to be beans AND cheese on toast. Or maybe a fried egg

chattyness · 12/07/2024 23:54

I love an on toast dinner, I sometimes have macaroni cheese on toast with leftovers from previous day, but if there isn't any left then I use a box of Marshall's macaroni cheese, it's quick delicious and pretty cheap too. You can tart it up with bits and bobs if you want but it's good enough to enjoy as it is, unlike the horrible orange kraft variety.

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 23:57

Soup is a great idea, not sure why I hadn't thought of that!

I also hadn't thought of adding different beans, will see how that goes down. Sadly one DC will not tolerate onion (refused curry tonight because it had some in).

Oh and 100% always cheese with beans on toast! I like the idea of cheese under but think it will add valuable minutes.

There is nothing wrong with a quick meal once a week but there's no reason it has to be beans on toast everytime. It's just as quick to do jacket potato, sandwiches, pizza, chips, nuggets, soup or even throw a mcdonalds in every so often. It's once a week as part of a balanced diet

BillyNoMates9 · 13/07/2024 00:01

Yanbu. I do it once or twice a week, often for Saturday lunch. Cheap easy and nutritious.

Vary it a bit. Give them Hoops on toast once in a while 😂

Ask the Gene genie:

Possibly the greatest TV line ever...

@Moonshine5

why wouldn’t you? Just out of interest

Needmorelego · 13/07/2024 00:07

@echt I say that every single time I have hoops 😂😂

TheKeatingFive · 13/07/2024 00:08

Absolutely fine OP. Who doesn't love beans on toast

Schmoana · 13/07/2024 00:12

lots of protein, fibre and vitamins in beans on toast - no problem at all

RockItLikeRocketFuel · 13/07/2024 00:17

AIBU to really fancy some beans on toast now I've read this?

SOxon · 13/07/2024 00:27

Sainsbury wholemeal muffins, with beans and fried egg on top was a regular
Monday meal, followed by an apple or orange, glass of milk.
OH prefers 2 poached egg on toast, but there are all sorts of permutations
as above. ^
I agree that wholemeal bread is much better than white.
My grandaughters favourite is sardines on toast, oiled, tomatoed, herbed, loves it

Toast is what I want when I wake in the night and make a cup of tea, its so comforting, with Irish butter and maybe honey.

So OP enjoy your bean based meal with a clear MN approved conscience !

The slow cooker is your friend OP. Whack it on before work - dinner done when home.
Alternatively, DH and I had stir fry tonight. I timed it - 9 minutes from starting to on plates. There is loads you can do that’s quick without resorting to UPF.

Oh blimey. Don't make her feel bad. The children are of the age where they get free hot school lunch. Baked beans on toast will be fine.
