To do beans on toast once a week?

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:39

Doing a different work pattern soon and two nights a week will be a lot of pressure to pick up DCs (infant age) from after school, feed them and not end up putting to bed too late.

I can't cook from scratch these nights and realistically don't think I'll be organised enough to batch cook for both nights.

AIBU to give my kids beans on toast every week for one evening meal? I know it's UPF but at least it's some kind of veg and very quick. They'll be having a hot lunch at school and are pretty good at eating it.

@LuckySantangelo35 why? Why can’t they just have beans on toast?
I never said she couldn't have beans on toast every week! I was giving another option!

of course. Completely normal. My older kids have beans and scrambled eggs on toast once a week. They also have pizza, chicken nuggets / fish fingers , sausage sandwiches, pasta pesto for tea once a week.
They have a cooked school meal. Simple and quick.

I think this is the first time I've seen a list of dinners on here that match up to mine😂 thought I'd been doing something awful 🤣

ApplesOrangesBananas · 12/07/2024 23:06

I wouldn’t say baked beans is vege… but my DC is similar age and when he has a hot lunch at nursery he never ever wants to eat a big meal again at home. So even though I’ve cooked it he usually ends up just having some toast and fruit. I wouldn’t worry!

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 12/07/2024 23:06

It's fine, so are hoops on toast or scrambled egg etc etc

I can't decide if I want beans on toast now or a fish finger sandwhich

UtterlyOtterly · 12/07/2024 23:08

My DC would have considered it neglect to only have beans on toast once a week at that age. They would have happily eaten it most nights.

Also "jar pasta" aka pasta with sauce from a jar, which they preferred to my lovingly homemade sauces.

Both children have survived and grown into healthy adults.

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 12/07/2024 23:09

Oh piss off you self righteous twats with your UPF! It's beans on toast for gods sake. "Resorting to UPF" Biscuit
Yes OP, definitely feed them beans on toast. Mine had omelette and beans tonight!

RabbitsRock · 12/07/2024 23:09

I think DH could live on beans on toast if he needed to. And vegan DB’s fav meal is jacket potato with beans & cheese. I love beans on toast. Have it for breakfast, lunch or tea.

Comedycook · 12/07/2024 23:10

It's absolutely fine.

Everyone fed = winning

Other quick meals

Ready made pizza chucked in oven with bagged salad

Egg on toast

Fish finger sandwich

Buy some ready cooked chicken drumsticks and a sachet of microwave rice

These are all very quick and perfectly fine. No one hands out medals to parents who cook elaborate meals from scratch, so don't stress!

AlanBrendaCelia · 12/07/2024 23:10

YABU as baked beans are the most disgusting thing known to man.

HcbSS · 12/07/2024 22:42

The slow cooker is your friend OP. Whack it on before work - dinner done when home.
Alternatively, DH and I had stir fry tonight. I timed it - 9 minutes from starting to on plates. There is loads you can do that’s quick without resorting to UPF.

@HcbSS

it don’t do them any harm to “resort” to “upf”s like beans on toast onec a week. What the issue?

Comedycook · 12/07/2024 23:14

If in doubt, cut up some cucumber and stick on the side of the plate... positively virtuous

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 12/07/2024 23:14

Mine usually have it on a tuesday night in term time because of extra curriculars. Like a previous poster, I use wholewheat bread and add extra cheese, bowl of cherry tomatoes and cucumber and some sort of fruit on the side.

Sometimes they have dippy eggs or scrambled eggs and toast or tomato soup with cheese and marmite pinwheels.

soupfiend · 12/07/2024 23:14

I cant wait for this obsession with UPFs to be over.

ttcat37 · 12/07/2024 23:14

Just had to google what UPF was. FML, what a miserable existence avoiding everything that fits into that category. Is it some mumsnet thing to gloat about, avoiding UPFs? What exactly do you think might happen if your kids eat beans on toast once a week?

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/07/2024 23:00

@JC03745

why? Why can’t they just have beans on toast?

Exactly. Nothing wrong with beans on toast.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 12/07/2024 23:15

I didn't know baked beans were even an UPF 👀.

They are a great source of protein though, and if you serve them with toasted wholemeal bread, I believe that is a pretty nutritious meal. (I could be wrong though, obviously not realising baked beans are UPF).

plainjayne8282 · 12/07/2024 23:15

Of course it's totally fine.

It's a good dinner. Put some cheese on top as well. Maybe some spring onion.

I'm all for reducing UPF, but I think this is going a bit far.

There's nothing wrong with beans.

Wholemeal bread would be better than white bread. But, ultimately, unless you want to bake your own, bread is considered UPF.

Which personally I think is going a bit far.

I think it's a good dinner.

LuckySantangelo35 · 12/07/2024 23:15

Those who are so militant regarding UPF’s - what meals do you consider to be ‘ok’? Just plain meat and veg or something?

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 12/07/2024 23:15

soupfiend · 12/07/2024 23:14

I cant wait for this obsession with UPFs to be over.

Same, although something else will come along after to keep the food bores going I'm sure

UPFs are just the latest middle class obsession😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/07/2024 23:17

Beans on toast, grated cheese on top, glass of milk, apple or orange for pud. Job done.

plainjayne8282 · 12/07/2024 23:17

JC03745 · 12/07/2024 22:52

Could you batch cook pasta sauces like Bolognese into freezer bags/containers? Remove from the freezer in the morning and leave in the fridge, then just cook the pasta and re-heat the sauce when you get in?

Why?

Why are you answering her question with a whole load of unrelated questions?

Why can't they just have beans on toast?

paywalled · 12/07/2024 23:17

Beans, fast food and good for you.

Or is that eggs.

Whu · 12/07/2024 23:18

I’ve eaten it as a meal at least twice a week for as long as I can remember! It’s the only food I can think of that I can enjoy breakfast/ lunch or dinner. It’s quick, cheap, filling, a complete protein and one of your 5 a day. Love it!

greengreyblue · 12/07/2024 23:19

Are you unreasonable to feed your children a nutritious and filling meal??? No of course you’re not!
