To do beans on toast once a week?

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:39

Doing a different work pattern soon and two nights a week will be a lot of pressure to pick up DCs (infant age) from after school, feed them and not end up putting to bed too late.

I can't cook from scratch these nights and realistically don't think I'll be organised enough to batch cook for both nights.

AIBU to give my kids beans on toast every week for one evening meal? I know it's UPF but at least it's some kind of veg and very quick. They'll be having a hot lunch at school and are pretty good at eating it.

An omelette is a fast meal.

I would be bored with beans on toast twice a week. I don't think my kids have ever had it!!

OkPedro · 12/07/2024 23:21

Beans on toast is ultra processed?! Who knew.. I will continue to eat beans on toast with grated cheese and worcestershire sauce 😋 at least once a week.. my almost teen children love beans on toast.
I can't stop laughing at "rather than resorting to" FFS 🙄😆

Wigtopia · 12/07/2024 23:21

beans on toast happens once a week here! As does jacket potato’s which have been cooked previously so just need reheating! Another good quick one is pittas, a couple of tubs of hummus with lots of carrot, cucumber, tomatoes and red peppers.

no shame in quick meals.

Beans, fast food and good for you.

Or is that eggs.

Back when I was growing up (70s), things on toast was a dinner, thats what you had for dinner

Beans on toast
Cheese on toast
Cheese and beans on toast
Sardines on toast
Sardines and cheese on toast
Mushrooms on toast
Egg on toast

Now, I cant eat bread anymore but my preference would be for beans on toast, topped with cheese, under the grill with a fried egg on top.
Thats what you call a dinner

Sunnydaysun · 12/07/2024 23:23

We all have beans on toast once a week when it's a really busy afterschool club evening.

Takeyourshoesoff · 12/07/2024 23:24

We have a picky bits dinner most nights this time of year, even in deepest darkest winter it's not uncommon for us to have bread/crackers, cheeses, cold meat, pickled/fresh vegetables, fresh/dried fruit, maybe some boiled eggs, nuts, or some leftovers like potato or pasta salad. Sometimes we have hot and cold meals, like hot dogs in buns with coleslaw, or quiche and salad. Microwave baked potatoes, pasta in sauce, air fryer salmon, stir fry, omelette. I don't think many things in my house take much longer than beans on toast on a weeknight. There just isn't time! Soup is another favourite, with cheese on toast ideally! Beans on toast with a sprinkle of cheese and a bit of Worcestershire sauce is a great weeknight meal anyway though, but some other ideas as well.

Crinklycrisp · 12/07/2024 23:24

Meanwhile in the real world, No one would give a shiny shit about eating beans on fucking toast once a week.

AuschwitzHistorian · 12/07/2024 23:25

My DC are grown ups now but we used to have a couple of quick meals during the week one being beans on toast or on a frozen McCain jacket potato. They also used to have tinned soup with a sandwich some nights if we were rushing to get to one thing or another. Honestly, beans and toast are fine.

GiveMeMySoddingCokeZero · 12/07/2024 23:26

Absolutely fine as long as you don't do what my parents did and try to hide slightly burnt toast slices under the beans.

I could tell, Mum. I could always tell.

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:47

Oh yes, now there's the variety I was wanting. 😂

With cheese on the toast before you put the hoops or beans on.

Perfectlystill · 12/07/2024 23:27

I agree slow cookers are depressing. The food they produce is sad.

OP I love good food and am a good cook and I also love beans on toast so much I have it at least once a week with good strong cheddar grated on top and masses of Worcestershire sauce. Yum.

Hankunamatata · 12/07/2024 23:29

I'm even more terrible - pot noodles or instant noodles.
Have gone a bit posher and gone for so a noodles with the fancy broth but not sure that's any better 🤔

Hankunamatata · 12/07/2024 23:30

Or cheese toasties op. They are another easy meal

Twodozenroses · 12/07/2024 23:30

What on earth is wrong with beans on toast?! Of course it’s fine. Mine have it quite regularly, it’s lovely

Catnipcupcakes · 12/07/2024 23:31

There’s nothing wrong with beans on toast.

OhcantthInkofaname · 12/07/2024 23:31

I convinced mine that oatmeal with their choice of fruits was the best dinner ever. I also always made extra waffles and pancakes to freeze for meals. When they got older I made a large Sunday soup and a casserole to have a few times a week.

Shybutrude · 12/07/2024 23:32

@MollyAndMuck you could always add a different tin of beans to the baked beans , I sometimes put drained mixed beans and baked beans together (or you can buy heinz five beans which are super expensive! ) extra fiber and really tasty.
I don't like cheesy beans, but I'm in a minority I think.

Beans on toast
Beans on bagel
Scrambled egg on toast with a side of beans
Beans on potato waffle (cooked in toaster - yes!)
Toast with lots of butter, then an extra piece with lemon curd on for 'pudding'

All different meals in this house!

Yes! We love a toaster potato waffle with beans! Grin
Also like a poached egg on a toaster potato waffle

Crinklycrisp · 12/07/2024 23:33

No need to mess about with beans on toast to win the mother of the year award. It's all good just as it is,

waitingforautumn · 12/07/2024 23:33

Beans on buttered toast was one of my fav childhood meals and is still a treat today 🙈 my mum was a v lazy cook haha and I've adopted the same habits. Absolutely nothing wrong with it and so good in fibre! Can top with cheese or an egg if worried about being filling enough, or just give them as big a portion as they want. Beans with sausages also work very well on toast.

PadstowGirl · 12/07/2024 23:38

Terrible parenting, you should report yourself to social services immediately, they will complete a safeguarding and send you on a cookery course, hopefully in France.

Beans on toast indeed.

Clutches pearls before fainting.

WiseBiscuit · 12/07/2024 23:38

Oh yes, I love “on toast” dinner- also toasties and soup.
DD has that sort of thing quite often as they have “snacky tea” at nursery at 4.30 and she’s not that hungry by 6pm. It will be similar at school.
Omelette is also a favourite.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 12/07/2024 23:39

I've got a feeling the 7% that have said YABU have only done that because they thought YABU to even ask this question 🤣

Ikr? I quite often just have a bagel. Perhaps I’ll die at 50.

I ruined our toaster cooking potato waffles in it. They melted 🤯
