To think it'd not be mad to put the heating on?

HesGotHisTrombolyse · 12/07/2024 18:46

It's July. And I won't put the heating on out of principle. And because it'd make me so sad to have the heating on when it's technically summer. I know that I should have the heating on depending on the temperature and not the season but I can't bring myself to 'admitting' that it's not summer.

But I'm sitting here, on a work call, thinking how cold it is even though I'm wearing jeans and a jumper. I can't be the only one surely, who's cold enough to long for the heating to be on even though it's July... I'm in the South of England.

It's bloody freezing. I've got my pjs and oodie on and I'm still cold; and it appears we are back to a three day turnaround for washing drying indoors.

CoastalCalm · 12/07/2024 21:58

Mine is still set to come on if temp drops below 19 and I’ve also had to use the hour boost a couple of times - regardless of the weather I just need to be comfortable especially working here

Disturbia81 · 12/07/2024 22:07

Mine has not stopped being on aside from the hot days, plus fire on too. Never had this before ever

@summeroccupation you're just up the road from me

Hi neighbour!

Cremeroulety · 12/07/2024 22:58

It was 11 degrees this morning where i live and it was raining at some point in the afternoon.

I work from home and didn’t put the heating on in my study, but after I logged off I did curl up under my electric blanket which I use nearly every single day. My bedroom can be a bit cold so I sometimes put the heating on for an hour or so! Standing charges are so high I don’t feel it massively reduce my bill if I suffer the cold, so I think I may as well crank the heating up sometimes.

This must be one of the gloomiest summers we’ve had weather wise surely ?

EvilNextDoor · 12/07/2024 23:14

We’ve lit a fire a few times this week, it’s been cold & damp

Currently in bed with my electric blanket on, it did warm up slightly this afternoon but I haven’t really been able to warm up properly this week 🥶🥶

Girlintheframe · 12/07/2024 23:17

We've had ours on for an hour here and there. Trying to avoid it as it's allegedly summer but if your cold, your cold so no point in suffering if you don't have to.

OldTinHat · 12/07/2024 23:17

I'm in the SE. Started off today wearing a summer dress and doors and windows open. Ended up with everything closed, cardigan and an oodie plus thermal socks.

Some people's intolerance of a bit of chilly weather never ceases to amaze me! How are you going to cope when it gets REALLY cold in winter?!

I'll be fucking miserable and in pain like every other winter.

Incakewetrust · 13/07/2024 00:39

I had mine on for an hour this afternoon. 🥶

SnowFrogJelly · 13/07/2024 01:02

I put it on this eve!

The heating? I know the weather is shit for July, but I'm in Cumbria, so it's likely more crappy than where you are. I'm in the kitchen with short sleeves and bare legs with the back door open and dh is outside barbecuing! Maybe 10 years of being a southerner in the NW has toughened me up Grin

This!

Berlinlover · 13/07/2024 01:32

I finished chemo five weeks ago and have no hair anywhere on my body. I put the heating on every evening, I’d be frozen otherwise.

Liveanlearn · 13/07/2024 01:44

If we have a heatwave/warm spell in November would you put your heating ON out of principal? I totally understand where you're coming from but weather is weather, particularly in the UK and whether you believe in global warming or not something is definitely affecting the seasons we're typically used to so we need to adapt and we're so fortunate to have central heating etc. I won't overspend on it if I can help it but I also won't be cold and miserable if I can help it.

Tomatina · 13/07/2024 02:12

This is a bit embarrassing but I've made a hot water bottle three times this week - sitting on the sofa reading, under a duvet, but couldn't get warm. I've been slightly unwell, but still, a hot water bottle. IN JULY.

I don't find winter as bad - it's the damp/rain at the minute
Heating went on just to take the damp out and I ran the dehumidifier too as drying washing inside

TheOpposition · 13/07/2024 02:38

I’ve cracked a few days recently. Bathroom towels don’t dry otherwise.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 13/07/2024 02:53

I always put some layers on under my jeans and jumper before resorting to the heating.

It makes such a difference.

I remember all the arguments I had when I was a teenager when I was cold and my mum was hot as she was going through the menopause. I just wish that I had put several layers on instead of just one under my jeans and jumper. It makes such a difference.

I feel so stupid not to thinking about doing that then.

TeaPleaseX · 13/07/2024 03:01

My house is driving me mad atm. It's freezing outside yet my house is 23 and boiling. I have just had a baby as well and keep getting hot flushes. Really not helping.

The only answer I have come up with is the people feeling cold are very slim (or skinny) and so feel the cold more or are suffering from the viruses going about which make you feel shivery.

Certainly I feel the cold more when slim than just now (not slim!) but I put the washing out at 4pm and am about to bring it in now bone dry.

Despite the poster above showing that it’s only 12 degrees and feels like 7?

Or maybe a more logical answer is that it’s colder in other areas of the country than wherever you are. 11 degrees is cold in anyone’s book. The WHO says indoor temperature should be a minimum of 18 degrees Celsius for optimal health. I’ve been awake half the night with joint pain, which I only usually suffer from in winter. I’m excited that today’s high is set to be 17, the highest it’s been here all week - a comparative heatwave!

Cremeroulety · 13/07/2024 07:44

I cracked mine on for an hour this morning as soon as I woke up. It’s 11 degrees again and 60% chance of rain ☔️ 😵‍💫

And no I’m definitely not skinny. I’m actually nearly a stone overweight and I need to reduce my body fat percentage 😮‍💨😆

My thermostat is set the same all year round. I don't understand why anyone would turn the heating off, do lots of people not have thermostats fitted ?

We do have thermostats but I turn my heating off completely during the summer and in the autumn/winter it is on a timer, as we are out of the house a lot during the week so no point it coming on. We also don’t have the heating on overnight.

Disturbia81 · 13/07/2024 10:20

I'm one of the cold ones.. I'm not thin, but have lost a lot of weight recently, I'm a size 12 and eat healthy. When I'm eating carbs and junk food, sugary coffees and have more fat on me I definitely feel a lot warmer.

I spent this last winter not wearing any hat, scarves, gloves etc and getting too hot in my winter coat even on the coldest days, as I was doing the above (eating crap and more fat on me) and didn't feel the cold as much.

So I was warm in winter and now cold in summer! 😂 so yes for me it's dependant on weight and diet.
