To think it'd not be mad to put the heating on?

HesGotHisTrombolyse · 12/07/2024 18:46

It's July. And I won't put the heating on out of principle. And because it'd make me so sad to have the heating on when it's technically summer. I know that I should have the heating on depending on the temperature and not the season but I can't bring myself to 'admitting' that it's not summer.

But I'm sitting here, on a work call, thinking how cold it is even though I'm wearing jeans and a jumper. I can't be the only one surely, who's cold enough to long for the heating to be on even though it's July... I'm in the South of England.

Cornwall here.

Weather is horrible, wet, miserable, stormy, but it's not cold. In fact it's really muggy and sticky. The thought of putting the heating on makes me come out in prickly heat.

Having said that, if you're that cold put the heating on!

Zanatdy · 12/07/2024 20:46

I’ve got my air con on (mobile one for living room) as it gets so hot in my flat, but even when I lived in a very cold older house I wouldn’t have put the heating on in July. My mum said she put hers on the other day, but she’s in the north. If you’re cold and don’t need to be too concerned about the cost put it on. I’d get my heated blanket or just wrap a blanket around me first before considering heating

noworklifebalance · 12/07/2024 20:48

Where in the SE are you @HesGotHisTrombolyse
We have had the windows open and we are SE but very much inland. The thermostat in our well insulated kitchen/living area shows 23degC and we haven’t had the oven on. Kids are in shorts and t-shirt.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/07/2024 20:52

I've had the heating on today. It was 19⁰C in the house and 17⁰C outside. Too overcast to get any heat off the windows/ conservatory all week. It's humid, so moving around gets sweaty, then stopping makes you cold so it feels colder than it is.

Like fuck am I sticking on a load of winter clothing and getting static shocks every time I touch something in July; it's bad enough Oct-April.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/07/2024 20:53

I’m wearing my Game of Thrones Winter is Coming fleece.
Put it on.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 12/07/2024 20:54

Mines on. Spent 8 hours at work absolutely frozen and haven't warmed back up since

Tulipvase · 12/07/2024 20:57

TomatoSandwiches · 12/07/2024 18:53

I'm in the SE and it's gloomy but still 18°C here, I'm sat in shorts and a shirt with the fan on me.

That strikes me as unusual as people putting the heating on tbh. It was overcast here today and I think about 18 degrees. My house is 19 inside. I have a cardigan on and my proper slippers. It’s a nice temperature I would say.

Well actually I’d rather it was cold enough to light the fire but I get that isn’t the case for most people.

Catnipcupcakes · 12/07/2024 20:57

I live in Scotland, and its a very rare night we don’t have a fire, even in Summer. The heating is left at the same set temperature as it is in winter and I never turn it off. It comes on almost every afternoon.

There is no ‘principle’ here. I refuse to be cold and damp just because its ‘Summer’.

Cas112 · 12/07/2024 20:59

I had mine on the other day

FluffyJellyCat · 12/07/2024 21:00

One good result of the house going down to 7 degrees c two winters ago is that 18 feels like Spain now.

CountdownCat · 12/07/2024 21:01

Mines been on today, it's been freezing and wet outside here

PickAChew · 12/07/2024 21:03

My central heating system thinks YANBU as the radiators are warm.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 12/07/2024 21:03

@summeroccupation you're just up the road from me

I don't understand this. I'm in central Scotland and the coldest room in the house (east facing) is 20 degrees and feels very warm. The west side of the house is at 24 degrees and roasting. My washing has been dried all summer out doors apart from once when I stomped around because I had to dry it indoors as it was too rainy.

Don't get me wrong we've had a few days of very heavy rain so I didn't do washing those days. We've had quite a few days where it's rained very lightly on and off but the washing always dries by the end of the day.

I was out with dog this afternoon and utterly roasting and dog was panting and trying to find shade. He refused his evening walk bar a few pees in the street then wanted to go home.

I honestly don't understand these threads saying summer has been awful unless Scotland is becoming warmer than the rest of the UK?

It must be. It’s been 14 degrees here today in NW England.

cardibach · 12/07/2024 19:30

Mine in South Wales hasn’t got over 20.5 for weeks.
I don’t put heating on or off. It’s set with a thermostat, if it goes below 18 in the evening it will come on (or a few hours in the morning).

My thermostat is set the same all year round. I don't understand why anyone would turn the heating off, do lots of people not have thermostats fitted ?

user1471453601 · 12/07/2024 21:06

If you really want to pit yourself against the environment, go ahead. But you won't win.

If you feel cold put your heating on. If your heating system is contributing to the climate crisis, change it.

PickAChew · 12/07/2024 21:13

This is us, tomorrow. If the thermostat turns the heating on, again, I'll not argue with it.

To think it'd not be mad to put the heating on?
spanieleyes22 · 12/07/2024 21:15

Tho k it's much nicer down south looking at Wimbledon! Freezing here in the midlands and raining for days on end . I think the damp makes it feel cooler

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 12/07/2024 21:15

TheRiddle · 12/07/2024 19:57

The only answer I have come up with is the people feeling cold are very slim (or skinny) and so feel the cold more or are suffering from the viruses going about which make you feel shivery.

Certainly I feel the cold more when slim than just now (not slim!) but I put the washing out at 4pm and am about to bring it in now bone dry.

Nah I'm fat and I'm still cold. Definitely not ill either

Floralnomad · 12/07/2024 21:19

SE here and we’ve got a fan on in our lounge . However if I was cold I’d put the heating on , I go by temperature not date .

user1471556818 · 12/07/2024 21:29

Yep I've had heating on the last couple of days .Scotland it's cold wet and miserable where I am. Temperatures changing by 10 degrees . Lifes just too short Thankfully better today

Oreosareawful · 12/07/2024 21:36

Midlands here and I was cold today. I put the heated seat on in the car and sat under a blanket on the sofa.

Tumbleweed101 · 12/07/2024 21:47

I set my thermostat to 20c earlier and heating came on. I have had my carpet cleaned so need to get out last moisture and windows have been open to lower humidity. I was chilly when first sitting in room tonight.

Can't believe I've had go do so in July though.

PuppyMonkey · 12/07/2024 21:53

Got a hoodie on and a blanket, going from cold to having hot flushes (this is normal I’m 57 don't be alarmed) but I’ll never give in and put the heating on in July. Never I say. Confused

UnashamedSlattern · 12/07/2024 21:54

South East here and 11 degrees currently. I’m just about to put the heating on for an hour to warm the house up for showers/overnight. Had the heating on most eves over the last few weeks as house feels cold and damp from all the rain.

DS left the back door and patio doors in the lounge both open just now which are at opposite sides of the house and it was bloody freezing! At this time of year, we’d normally have them open to cool down the house!
