Would you let an annoying family member live with you for 300k?

L4815 · 11/07/2024 17:40

A relative of ours has said they will give us 300k if we allow them to move in with us.

It's me, DH and DS.

Pros.

Our 135k mortgage would be paid off plus other outstanding debt. We'd have a nice safety cushion and a better life financially.

Despite being annoying, deep down, we love family member and one of us feels a sense of duty toward them.

Family member would contribute to household chores.

Cons.

Family member is incredibly annoying. They like to be in control of everything. We don't let them but its still irritating.

Family member is a just about functioning alcoholic and would require our assistance with reducing.

Despite having some health issues, they are only in their 50s so potentially could end up living with us for another 20 years.

Family member would nag us about keeping the house clean. Much higher standards than us.

House is only a bog standard terrace so although we have a spare room, we only have one bathroom, one living area, etc.

One of us says absolutely no way, not even for a million. Other one sort of agrees but id also slightly swayed by how beneficial money would be and also feels sorry for family member who lives alone and has no other family or friends.

Almost feels a bit like selling your soul to the devil for money.

Ultimately feels like a choice between freedom or money.

WWYD?

Hypothetical really as one of us has already vetoed.

Well that's hideously poor advice if ever I saw it.

No. You have attempted to temporarily hide the problem with a throw. The chair is still shit.

The chair is no longer a chair - Things HAVE changed
The chair IS a visual attraction - it HAS become somethin else
It HAS become, the new - which is whatever U then make it

All chairs aside, you're happy to subject an innocent child to an alcoholic for the sake of a few bob? Why is that?

Of course it's still a chair, it's a chair with a throw on it. The throw will now be chair shaped for one thing! Making a short-term, superficial change does not alter the fundamental and obvious fact that under the throw it is chair.

Taking the money is a bad idea. What will he live on once all the money has been given to OP. He can't claim benefits, he deprived himself of assets. He's an alcoholic and doesn't work, he will be a massive burden no matter how you try to cover it.

Just stick a throw on him . Be grand 😂

Maybe he could be a replacement chair for all the ones that mysteriously change into other objects when covered.

PepsiMaxPerfect · 15/07/2024 09:35

That few bob changes things.
That innocent child CAN become a rock star WITH that few bob.
More likely 2 B a rock star WITH the help of a few bob than WITHOUT

You are completely incorrect in your (frankly quite childish) assumption that money magically rectifies damage done by living dysfunction. These formative years are so important, for so many reasons. Innocent children do not deserve to have a drunken ghost knocking around the house. It's got nothing to do with money and everything to do with providing a safe and stable home for the child. Which they already have. It would be madness to bring this on themselves.

Is ‘build an annexe’ the new ‘cancel the cheque’?

( Except for ‘build an annexe’ being a terrible idea with all the ramifications not thought through)

Ok, I get it, you're a throw advocate. Best of luck with that. It's actually completely irrelevant to the OPs question though.

DanielGault · 15/07/2024 09:47

@PepsiMaxPerfect maybe I'm just particularly grumpy this morning ,but excessive capital letters don't convince me of your argument either. You shouldn't need to shout to convince me retreats beneath my throw

I once tried to make a display cabinet out of a throw but it was just too soft and thin to stay up. We tried to thicken it by soaking it in a vat of jizz overnight but it STILL wasn't crunchy enough, what's your secret? Did we need more jizz because my DH was spent after filling the first bucket so we'd have to get friends and family involved and as much as I'd like to be, we're just not that type of family.

I’m stuck in a really long queue at passport control. Bumping this thread because it was making the queue bearable and then I reached the end of the thread.

@PepsiMaxPerfect what else can be achieved with a throw please?

Neveranynamesleft · 16/07/2024 23:45

Trying to disguise something problematic, whether it's an old sofa or an alcoholic, by covering it up with a throw, does not hide the actual problem. It merely covers it up. It does not change what is underneath it.
