Confirmed the Blackwall tunnel and the new Silvertown tunnel will become toll tunnels in 2025
£4 per crossing 😡😡 add that to the congestion and ULEZ charge hardly worth going to work !!

They want you to take public transport!

Sirzy · 10/07/2024 20:00

In London can you not use public transport or drive to a station and then use public transport?

The idea is to put people off driving into the City centre and for a lot of people in London it will work because it does have very good transport links on the whole.

HowardTJMoon · 10/07/2024 21:02

If you're going to be going in to the congestion charging zone, why would you be going through the Blackwall/Silvertown tunnels? Wouldn't the Rotherhithe tunnel or one of the bridges inside the zone make more sense? Plus the ULEZ charge doesn't apply to over 90% of cars in/around London.

Can you clarify what it is you drive, from where, and to where? We might be able to find a cheaper option for you. Parking must be expensive too, right?

OrwellianTimes · 10/07/2024 21:05

There’s got to be relatively few jobs where you have to drive in surely? Public transport in London is excellent.

Moonshiners · 10/07/2024 21:05

Surely the point being you take public transport. It has massively improved air quality already.

LumiB · 10/07/2024 21:05

Wow that's pricey luxkitl I'm south east London so I'll Just jump on m25.and drive round clockwise if I need to go to north London suburbs area

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 10/07/2024 21:07

That's precisely because they don't want you to take your car into London! For very good reasons.

Zanatdy · 10/07/2024 21:07

Lived on outskirts of london for 24yrs, never needed to consider taking a car into central london.

OddBoots · 10/07/2024 21:08

On the other side of this it will be much nicer to be in London if there are fewer cars around.

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/07/2024 21:11

Ahh yes all those people who drive shit old bangers who need to both drive through the Blackwall Tunnel and in to central London for work every day.

DogInATent · 10/07/2024 21:13

Ah, see how quickly nature recovers after an election, the Reform shills are returning to the familiar target of the London Mayor.

WellwellwellInever · 10/07/2024 21:13

Children have died due to poor air quality. We have to change. Public transport is good enough in London.

AnnaMagnani · 10/07/2024 21:14

How are you going through all three on your way to work? Plus over 90% of cars don't pay the ULEZ anyway!

You pay for the Dartford Crossing, surely it was obvious any new tunnels would be tolls too.

TeenLifeMum · 10/07/2024 21:15

That’s literally the aim, to stop people using their cars.

TimeandMotion · 10/07/2024 21:16

I imagine that the number of people driving ulez non-compliant cars, who live south of the river AND need to drive into the congestion charge zone for work can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

If this is genuinely something that applies to you OP I’d be shocked.

Have worked inside the CC zone for decades. Never once driven my car into it.

AnnaMagnani · 10/07/2024 21:20

The CC is really really small. I used to have to drive my car into work nearby. Never needed to take in the zone.

HowardTJMoon · 10/07/2024 21:25

Ooh, one other thing - if the reason you have to drive into central London is because you work unusual hours, don't forget that the £4 Blackwall/Silvertown tunnel charge will only be for peak times. Off-peak will be £1.50 plus there'll be discounts for local residents on low incomes. HTH!

No. They want the POOR to take public transport. The RICH can do as they please.

How can this be a Labour Policy.

TeresaCrowd · 10/07/2024 21:31

The expansion of the ULEZ has stopped me driving to the outskirts and getting the tube. Used to be able to park up somewhere like Becton and then go in on public transport, and save yourself £12.50. Now if I’ve got to pay ULEZ just to turn off the M25 where there is no congestion I’m not paying all the zones on the tube as well so I’ll drive all the way in and park in the middle. Lots of free on street parking round the centre on weekends. Opposite to the solution they were hoping for!

More major cheap/free car parks need to spring up round the further out tube stations and ULEZ free routes the them from the M25 would probably make more of a difference as it could take away a lot of tourist traffic from the centres. It works in major European cities. They almost always have excellent large clean underground car parks.

This.
Plus statistics show that the poorest households have a low level of car ownership.
Unless necessary because of disability, I don't understand why anyone would want to drive in central London.

TheLastTrainForTheCoast · 10/07/2024 21:33

Agree @TeresaCrowd but I think money is their motivation

HowardTJMoon · 10/07/2024 21:38

OK. How would you dissuade both the rich and the poor from taking vehicles into central London unnecessarily?

BitOutOfPractice · 10/07/2024 21:38

@TeresaCrowd that is a completely different scenario from the op 🙄

TheLastTrainForTheCoast · 10/07/2024 21:45

HowardTJMoon · 10/07/2024 21:38

Rationing. With apps and trackers it is now easy.

Everyone would have a ration of miles. Obviously needs some thought, but fairer than monetary fines.

But also as @TeresaCrowd says, large accessible and cheap car parks in on the outskirts.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/07/2024 21:45

It's nothing to do with rich or poor, we should all be taking public transport because of air quality

I use it every day, way better than driving
