Confirmed the Blackwall tunnel and the new Silvertown tunnel will become toll tunnels in 2025
£4 per crossing 😡😡 add that to the congestion and ULEZ charge hardly worth going to work !!

It's nothing to do with rich or poor, we should all be taking public transport because of air quality

I use it every day, way better than driving

Of course it is. By making it expensive you price out the poor. That is not the basis of a fair society.
Rich people can drive whatever they like as much as they want. Great big 4x4s with massive impact.

But then that seems acceptable to so many that don't practice what they preach

Allfur · 10/07/2024 21:48

Hopefully one day, all private cars will be a thing of the past in central london, rich or poor

Massive 4 x 4s are not seen as acceptable to many

So let's target them equally. Let's ration visits to the capital.

whathasitgottodowiththepriceofoliveoil · 10/07/2024 21:49

Is there not a bus you could get?

But it isn't what is acceptable, it is what is possible.

Ilovemyshed · 10/07/2024 21:50

So how do all the posters here suggest that tradies manage?

Paris is pricing them out, hopefully london will go the same way

Pedallleur · 10/07/2024 21:53

ULEZ. A scheme set up by Boris as I recall.

In London can you not use public transport or drive to a station and then use public transport?

The idea is to put people off driving into the City centre and for a lot of people in London it will work because it does have very good transport links on the whole.

Not if you are a delivery driver or removals firm

Gogogo12345 · 10/07/2024 21:57

OrwellianTimes · 10/07/2024 21:05

There’s got to be relatively few jobs where you have to drive in surely? Public transport in London is excellent.

Tradesmen taxi food delivery . Looking at a few thousand people at least. Not everyone goes into zLondon to sit in an office

HowardTJMoon · 10/07/2024 21:59

Gogogo12345 · 10/07/2024 21:55

Sure, but in that case it's simply the cost of business. If you deliver to somewhere outside London then the price is £x, if you deliver inside the congestion zone then it's £x + £15 or whatever.

CraftyNavySeal · 10/07/2024 21:59

Are you driving a tank to Mayfair or something?

I have a car in fairly centralish London and I have never paid a penny, my last 20 year old car was ULEZ exempt as well.

Allfur · 10/07/2024 22:00

Or cycle

They want you to take public transport!

Difficult to take tools and materials for a bathroom installation, house rewrite, heating installation etc. on public transport!

Plus not all of London is covered by decent public transport! My home to my work is 15-20 minutes by car, 60-90 minutes by public transport depending on how long I have to wait between the three different buses. I live in a London borough but crap public transport options.

mitogoshi · 10/07/2024 22:04

Get a motorcycle, exempt from charges, cheap to run (don't know about the tunnels I admit as live west)

HowardTJMoon · 10/07/2024 22:06

TheLastTrainForTheCoast · 10/07/2024 21:45

Rationing. With apps and trackers it is now easy.

Everyone would have a ration of miles. Obviously needs some thought, but fairer than monetary fines.

But also as @TeresaCrowd says, large accessible and cheap car parks in on the outskirts.

I think it'd be difficult to come up with a rationing scheme that couldn't easily be circumvented. You can't link it to the vehicle as, otherwise, a rich person will just use multiple vehicles. You can't link it to an app on a phone because, again, they'll just use multiple phones.

Building large, accessible car parks on the outskirts means building those car parks in what are already suburban commuter towns. Getting the land to do that in those areas would not be easy because that land would be much more valuable for housing that can be advertised as having ready access to a train line.

Cyclebabble · 10/07/2024 22:06

Trains work well. Ulez only for older more polluting cars. Congestion charge only if you drive right into the centre. SO coming south of the river, past Tower Hill. There are exemptions for disabled drivers, so I am very supportive.

HideTheCroissants · 10/07/2024 22:06

Gogogo12345 · 10/07/2024 21:55

Not if you are a delivery driver or removals firm

Or if you work some shifts! Trains to my London borough don’t run overnight.

Allfur · 10/07/2024 22:10

46% of london households do not own a car, people manage

TheLastTrainForTheCoast · 10/07/2024 22:11

Allfur · 10/07/2024 21:52

Paris is pricing them out, hopefully london will go the same way

You will never price out the really rich.

LadyFeatheringt0n · 10/07/2024 22:13

If you are a delivery driver/removal van then you pass costs on - all your competitors have to as well so no one is disadvantaged. Maybe you lose some distance to bike couriers for small items which is exactly what the policy intends to achieve.

Applepencilplant · 10/07/2024 22:13

Get a bus? Train? DLR?

LadyFeatheringt0n · 10/07/2024 22:13

You can't link it to an app on a phone because, again, they'll just use multiple phones.

You link it to national insurance numbers?
