call me unreasonable but when are people sent to jail going to get real punishment??
It seems its quite the norm now just to get a couple of years for a stabbing, drink driving and kill somebody, give them a wee fine and a few points.Even better, jail them maybe 5 years and a five year ban, to run concurrently !!!!!. I want youth detention facilitys to be a detterent not a bloody holiday camp, where they "rehabilitate" playing a Wii anf flaming absailing.
No doubt some bleeding heart will say its not their fault and a bit of tlc will cure them. Well if god forbid if something happened to any of their family would they be happy if that was the punishment Rant over!!!

Personally I think jail should be for those who are guilty of one off crimes of temptation/passion who 'might' not reoffend.

If someone is in court for the 2nd or 3rd or 20th time I'd happily see them given a lethel injection instead of just giving them a holiday and sending them out to do it again. It would free up funds/space to rehabilitate the ones who might benefit.

If that seems too harsh imagine how it would go.

Judge: "You have been found guilty of mugging pensioners for the second time. If you do it again you will be executed. It's your choice"

Alambil · 11/04/2008 10:23

I agree! Bring back the slop bucket... (and other things!)

Greyriverside · 11/04/2008 10:26

And you were expecting a 'bleeding heart'

I am serious, but only for clear cases of reoffending where the court recognises the same guy they had in last month and the month before so it's clearly not going to stop.

DANCESwithLordPottingtonSmythe · 11/04/2008 10:27

Farkin hell. You sound like an ill informed moron. Have you been in a prison? Do you know anyone who has been to prison? I do. It wasn't fucking Butlins. Get an original opinion and we might talk.

OverMyDeadBody · 11/04/2008 10:29

YANBU

I think the death penalty should be used in some cases too.

Prison should be a miserable dark place with no mod cons or luxury good of any sort, not even tvs, and simple food like gluel and over boiled broccoli. The prospect of going to prison should fill people with fear and dread. It's a joke at the moment.

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 11/04/2008 10:33

reason number one why capital punishment is wrong

reason number two why capital punishment is wrong

in case you need another reason...

WombFor1More · 11/04/2008 10:36

Couldn't agree more ppie.

My ex husband got a 5yr sentance for arson, he burnt our house down, he then somehow has managed to get that sentance reduced by at least 2-3yrs and is due to get out next year.

Imo once you are sentanced that should be it. None of this "if you behave yourself you'll get time knocked off" crap.

Makes my blood boil that most people get given such measly pointless sentances in the first place

CountessDracula · 11/04/2008 10:39

I think anyone unsavoury should be kept naked in freezing huts, 3 to a bed, hosed down with cold water on a regular basis, starved, forced into hard labour and then gassed at the end

(Close chum of OP it would seem)

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 10:47

Yes, let's lock up teenage boys and throw away the key.

Maybe, just maybe if the rehabilitation centres had the capability to actually help these youngsters we wouldn't be in this mess.

People don't just say one day 'oooh, I think I'll become a petty criminal', I'll bet if you ask Cod many of the kids she sees before her have been dragged up through a shit life and know no better, but there is no decent rehabilitation for them, and if they're lucky enough to get some help it's too late anyway.

I do think prison should be more of a deterrent but for some of these kids it's the closest thing to home, which is fucking sad.

CountessDracula · 11/04/2008 10:47

I am also interested to find out what the OP has against seaweed?

What is its crime?

Hulababy · 11/04/2008 10:47

Prison should be used for those who are a danger to society. The punishment is loss of freedom. The prison should not just punish though. They should help to rehabilitate the person - to reduce the liklihood of that person reoffending. Infact the latter has to be very important - it should be the key role of the prison.

I do think we can be a bit too soft of our prisoners though. Too much human rights stuff about now. We need to make education and work within the prison compulsary and not optional. And we need to make reoffending behaviour programmes compulsary for all, and more radily available within all prisons.

Getting out on tag or parole does have systems and are not just things that happen. But again, I would like it to be tougher.

And for lesser crimes we need more effective alternatives to prisons. Prisons are very expensive to run. We need to reduce our prison population. We need far more community based sanctions and rehabilitation systems in place.

And saldy for some prisoners you can look back at their lives and see how things have led to them being in prison. It doesn't mean it is okay. It doesn't mean they shouldn't be punished. But you can see how it happens.

Hulababy · 11/04/2008 10:48

Dealth penalty IMO is never right. there is too muh risk involved anyway. And how can killing someone ever be seen as an acceptable thing in a civilised society? It simply isn't right.

fletchaaarr · 11/04/2008 10:52

I have been in three prisons. None of them was a holiday camp. One was a boot camp.

fletchaaarr · 11/04/2008 10:53

I was in the prisons for work, not as the result of a crime by the way

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 10:54

Here I was wondering what you'd done.
Damn, you ruined my mornings fun.

And having spent a lot of time in the prison environment, seeing the cells, spending time in the areas te prisoners are in - I wouldn't want to be doing it from the other side. No way.

beansmum · 11/04/2008 11:07

5 years is a really really really long time to be separated from your family and friends and told what you're allowed to do all day. No matter how many wii's, tv's, abseiling trips you have.

and the death penalty is just stupid. hmm, you've killed someone, so to show everyone that it is wrong, we will kill you.

hercules1 · 11/04/2008 11:13

Just wondering what you mean by 'weirdo'? COuld you explain further please?

conniedescending · 11/04/2008 11:18

phycos (sic) shouldn't even be in 'jail' (do you mean prison btw?) They are generally sectioned to mental health insitutions.

Greyriverside · 11/04/2008 11:19

SquonkTheBeerGuru, I don't want to hijack the thread. Just was amused that the OP was expecting everyone to say "ohh poor prisoners" however none of your links have anything to do with the situation I described.

Beansmum, I didn't mean "to show everyone that it is wrong" or as revenge, but as a practical solution to repeat offenders. Maybe another day I will do a thread just on that.

In the meantime if all we have is prisons then make the sentences long, but I don't agree with abusing people while they are in there.

I would go along with seperate cells and no mixing with other prisoners. I think in that case a short sentence would seem like a much a longer one.

constancereader · 11/04/2008 11:20

To the OP - I WILL call you unreasonable.

So there.

OverMyDeadBody · 11/04/2008 11:20

OH God, I didn't think this would turn into a serious thread, so just to clarify, my post was mostly tongue in cheek and I don't really want the death penalty brought back or anything!

constancereader · 11/04/2008 11:21

I could tell that OverMyDeadBody!

VoluptuaGoodshag · 11/04/2008 11:23

Just to fling something in for moral debate ....

had he not killed himself after his despicable crime, what sentence would you have passed for Thomas Hamilton (Dunblane Tragedy)?
