call me unreasonable but when are people sent to jail going to get real punishment??
It seems its quite the norm now just to get a couple of years for a stabbing, drink driving and kill somebody, give them a wee fine and a few points.Even better, jail them maybe 5 years and a five year ban, to run concurrently !!!!!. I want youth detention facilitys to be a detterent not a bloody holiday camp, where they "rehabilitate" playing a Wii anf flaming absailing.
No doubt some bleeding heart will say its not their fault and a bit of tlc will cure them. Well if god forbid if something happened to any of their family would they be happy if that was the punishment Rant over!!!

GreyRiverSide - The first two of my links were about people who had been convicted of an awful crime and executed, then subsequently found to have been wholly innocent. The third was to an entirely innocent person who was found guilty after the death penalty was abolished.

I merely wanted to demonstrate that no matter how sure you are that somebody is guilty of a crime (or of several crimes) mistakes, miscarriages of justice, do happen, have happened and no doubt will continue to happen. If we exectue people legally, then we will be guilty of murder and I want no part of that.

ppie · 11/04/2008 13:16

voluptua I would have quite happily, with an easy concience left him a room with all the parents of the innocent children he killed and see how, if he came out of it.

Oh ffs learn to spell.

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 13:22

Because of course ppie that is the best way for a prent to deal with their grief, to turn into violent murderous people and spend the rest of their days feeling that they somehow sullied their children's memories by succumbing to something as low as the murderer himself.
Great idea.

SheikYerbouti · 11/04/2008 13:22

Wouldn't life be wonderful id it were as b&w as so many folk make out on this forum

To the OP: I hear that Homebase have pitchforks on special offer - buy one, get a free torch

psycho, btw.

ppie · 11/04/2008 13:25

everybody is allowed to their own opinions, it would be a very boring place if we were all the same.

There should be a special wing on every prison especially for DM readers. It will protect them from the other prisoners - it's for their own safety.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 11/04/2008 13:29

everyone is allowed their own opinions.

some of them are best kept in the brain that cooked them up.

freedom of speech is wasted on some people.

ppie · 11/04/2008 13:29

Ive never read the DM in my life, thanks

Sheik, don't start picking holes in the thread title - we'll be here all day!

harpsichordcarrier · 11/04/2008 13:32

ppie have you ever been in a prison? they really are pretty unpleasant places to be, tbh. except for the very few who end up in open prisons.
maybe you could volunteer as a prison visitor?

ppie · 11/04/2008 13:32

Lauriefairycake · 11/04/2008 13:32

Oh look, yet another thread about hating children young adults who have had shit lives

harpsichordcarrier · 11/04/2008 13:34

what are you about?
do you know what prison visitors o?

harpsichordcarrier · 11/04/2008 13:35

prison visitors

mumblechum · 11/04/2008 13:36

I've been in lots of prisons both as a lawyer and as a learning mentor, helping young offenders with literacy.

Perhaps you could help out like that ppie

SheikYerbouti · 11/04/2008 13:37

Give some love back, and revoke your DM subscription

unknownrebelbang · 11/04/2008 13:38

Hula speaks so much sense on this subject.

Prison is not just about punishment, it's about rehabilitating offenders so that they are fit to rejoin our (so-called) civilised society. Unfortunately in lots of cases the balance is wrong.

Twinkie1 · 11/04/2008 13:41

DD was watching Look East the other day and they were talking about a prison near us - they had pictures of the rooms and she was stunned that they had PCs and radios and pictures up everywhere - from the mouth of a 7 year old - 'Well that doesn't look too bad does it, I get to go to my bedroom when I am naughty and I don't have any of those things in it' says it all - they need a strict regime (prisoners not just 7 year olds!), the need to have to work doing things to learn a trade and earn money and help the community that they have hurt in some way and they need to have to endure hours of rehabilitation - no matter what their religon is!

I think it is all too easy to blame the way they are brought up - you know from TV (watching the news or Panorama) and your community what is right and wrong even if you don't get that input from your parents!

ppie · 11/04/2008 13:43

harpsichordcarrier, you are right I shall go forth armed with fake sympathy and smile to nod and agree that it was no big deal they got sloshed and jumped in the car and mowed over a child!!!
Im away now to go and gather up the local villagers to chase away the newcomers, you cant trust these folks you know!!

OverMyDeadBody · 11/04/2008 13:44

laurie I don't think this thread is about hating young adults who have had shit lives, are you assuming all prisoners (or the OP's weirdos, murders, phyco's) are children young adults?! Isn't that a bit stereotypical?

unknownrebelbang · 11/04/2008 13:46

Think Laurie is referring to the OP - youth detention facilities were referred to.
