To be so happy at so many women in the cabinet

Standupcitizen · 06/07/2024 19:16

Anyone else absolutely thrilled to see women represented equally in the cabinet for the first time ever?

22 appointments. 11 women, 11 men. It seems completely deliberate. Previously the highest % of females in the cabinet was something like 38%. First female chancellor in history as well.

I feel elated that for the first time in my life, we have equality of the sexes in government.

Whatever you think of starmer, the labour party or of the women in question, this is absolutely huge to me, i feel ridiculously emotional about it. I think as a woman who has been dismissed, talked over, belittled, discriminated against and overlooked for promotion in favour of men in the workplace - if the government can do it, then other companies have no excuse.

I guess you missed the news of the appointment of Shabana Mahmood?

And Lisa Nandy.

Is that the best you can do? 🙄

Blair was responsible for the deaths of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan for weapons of mass destruction that never existed and he knew it.

Why isn't he in jail.

Don't you dare fucking roll your eyes dismissively at that. A shit mini budget is nothing compared to that.

I shouldn't worry about it too much since I understand Nandy isn't in the Cabinet.

@MrsCobbit - of course the new government know what a woman is.

l’m not absolutely confident😢

BIossomtoes · 06/07/2024 20:08

Yes, it is. And almost entirely state educated.

That really isnt a reason to be smug.

absquatulize · 06/07/2024 21:22

I think there is some mistake. I was reliably informed up thread that the only non-white in the cabinet was Lammy.

The best person should get the job. I couldn't give a toss if they're male/female/white/black/etc etc.

This absolutely

Did she at any point say she supported Tony Blairs actions?

PoloMum · 06/07/2024 21:24

absquatulize · 06/07/2024 21:03

At the risk of repeating myself. Is Harriet Harman a man?

I did love the way she schooled JRM at about 3am on Friday when he was going on about how the committee that found Johnson to be guilty of lying was a stitch up - a committee that he voted to set up, and whose findings he did not vote against.

Harriet Harman was Deputy Leader. After Gordon Brown's resignation she was briefly Acting Leader, until the party elected Ed Miliband as Leader.

Not once in its 100+ year history has the Labour Party elected a female leader.

SharonEllis · 06/07/2024 21:25

Rainbowsponge · 06/07/2024 20:01

But it’s not representative. Almost exclusively white and able bodied.

Could you tell us which disabled people of colour you would have appointed to which cabinet posts?

She dismissed it by rolling her eyes and asking if that's the best criticism I could come up with...umm yeah so she does support it at best or at worst doesn't care.

As long as labour throw a few pounds extra in benefits who cares if their leader is a war criminal.

You were making a shit argument that wasn't relevant to what she was saying.

Such a simplistic article, like much thinking on here. Privately educated kids arent necessarily from hugely wealthy parents. Plenty of regular business owners and middle managers send their kids to private school. Self made people and those who have dug in and excelled. Private schools arent solely for the silver spoon brigade.

That really isnt a reason to be smug.

It is if you're working class and didn't have the option of buying your way into a private education. Finally people like me are represented in government.

I was rolling my eyes dismissively at you. Incidentally we’d have gone to war on the basis of regime change under a Tory government.

Howard under fire over Iraq

Michael Howard was put on the defensive over Iraq today after saying he would have gone to war even if Saddam Hussein had no weapons arsenal.

I am well aware of that, but the poster I was replying to stated that Labour had never had a female leader, that is untrue, they have had two.

Of course if being elected is a key requirement to be considered to properly qualify as a leader of a political party, then neither Sunak or Farage are party leaders.

They always were represented in government. A balance is better than all state education or all privately educated.

Private school does provide an advantage that most children don't have regardless of the financial situation of their parents. It's harder to succeed without that advantage.

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 06/07/2024 21:37

I would love.labour to select a woman leader at some point. But honestly, inwill take the 50% over a token woman leader. Why? Because with 50% representation, it's genuinely not a good assumption to imagine a man when considering any cabinet position. That has never ever been the case before. We can all.agree that assuming leaders/people in charge are men is not great but the stats backed up that assumption. Today, in Britain, that's just not true. That is momentus. You might not know who a particular cabinet member is but automatically assuming its a man is just 50% likely to be right.

Life changing for me as a women who has spent her entire life looking around asking, "why aren't there more women here?"

A representative balance would have about 7% of the cabinet having been privately educated. So there is an argument to be made that perhaps there could be 2 privately educated cabinet ministers instead of one. Although in 1980, only 5.8% of students went to fee paying schools, so perhaps 1 is enough?

Only 7% of the population is privately educated so no there shouldn’t be a balance. A government should be representative of its people. Finally we have that.

We are discussing the offspring of private schooling not the parents.
