To be so happy at so many women in the cabinet

Standupcitizen · 06/07/2024 19:16

Anyone else absolutely thrilled to see women represented equally in the cabinet for the first time ever?

22 appointments. 11 women, 11 men. It seems completely deliberate. Previously the highest % of females in the cabinet was something like 38%. First female chancellor in history as well.

I feel elated that for the first time in my life, we have equality of the sexes in government.

Whatever you think of starmer, the labour party or of the women in question, this is absolutely huge to me, i feel ridiculously emotional about it. I think as a woman who has been dismissed, talked over, belittled, discriminated against and overlooked for promotion in favour of men in the workplace - if the government can do it, then other companies have no excuse.

The best person should get the job. I couldn't give a toss if they're male/female/white/black/etc etc.

Absolutely this

Utterly ridiculous to tick boxes, which is what he's clearly doing. All men, all women, all black.

It shouldn't matter.

tinydynamine · 06/07/2024 20:28

Labour is still the only major party in the UK that has only ever had white male leaders.

How do you know what disabilities they have?

If they have any they’re not visible. I think it’s unlikely they have mental/psychological disabilities given their positions.

Neurodivergence?

Rainbowsponge · 06/07/2024 20:31

Lammy is a terrible choice for one of the top offices of state - his skin colour is irrelevant to his intelligence/ ability, but probably guaranteed his appointment.

What?! He’s a wonderful politician, I was really pleased to hear he had been appointed. He’s decent, he listens, he’s calm, he’s intelligent.

Doesthishurt · 06/07/2024 20:31

So WOKE ! And yet, don't think Jess Phillips is one of the "chosen".
Jess Phillips for PM !! Jess has had her troubles though, she was heckled and booed the other day when the results for her constituency came in.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/07/2024 20:32

Tarquina

Nope, I'm GC, Nandy is a twat about that. What she said is 4 years ago and I'm pretty sure she will change her mind on it now that the entire debate has changed

You and I have always had that opinion, other people have to catch up

HungryLittleCrocodile · 06/07/2024 20:32

YES! 🙌🏽 Very chuffed about this! Smile

wow. I hope people don’t think that about my minority status ffs. Like we don’t already have enough bigotry to contend with.

Because the party that's had three woman leaders and one British Asian male has been so representative of the country as a whole and performed so well in government. Not.

Nobody with a brain does. It’s a disgraceful thing to say.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/07/2024 20:38

I said to DP last night that I thought the Labour cabinet was the most relatable I'd seen - I went to a comprehensive school then to a redbrick uni and would say I'm lower middle class.

Sometimes people succeed in spite of their disability.

It is wonderful however the truth will be if they can define a woman without any hint of irony.

This 100%

So, apart from David Lammy, Keir Starmer looked around at all his MPs and couldn't find another talented person of colour to join the Cabinet? Is only one 'token' person of colour allowed?

I was for many years the only black woman in my workplace in a government department. I thought those days were left behind. What does the sight of the current cabinet do for aspiring young people of colour?

The Conservative party was awful, but surprisingly when it came to diversity and equality they had 2 women prime Ministers (Liz Truss doesn't count) and had a much more ethnically diverse cabinet.

In this area the Labour leadership has a very, very long way to go.

Frightening that Starmer appointed her to this post.

Chickenuggetsticks · 06/07/2024 20:45

Depends on the woman really. A lot of them struggle with understanding what a woman is and why she may need sex based rights. I’m really glad that Duffield retained her seat though.

absquatulize · 06/07/2024 20:46

WomensRightsRenegade · 06/07/2024 20:11

Why does skin colour matter more than class? David ‘men can grow a cervix’ Lammy is a terrible choice for one of the top offices of state - his skin colour is irrelevant to his intelligence/ ability, but probably guaranteed his appointment.

I’m depressed at the sight of all those women in cabinet. Every last one of them has sold out her sex by embracing the deeply misogynist gender ideology. Something which affects the most vulnerable women in society far more than others.

Not one of those women have uttered a word of condemnation re the avalanche of rape and death threats Rosie Duffield continues to receive. Not one.

I think it is a great shame that there is no mechanism for the people of this great country to express their view as to who they want to lead them. Where everyone no matter who they are is given the opportunity to campaign, to stand for election and see how popular their views are.

OvaHere · 06/07/2024 20:47

Lot's of women have held cabinet positions in recent years so I don't think it's that remarkable.

It's easy to think making the numbers match exactly is representing women but all these women are politicians first and representing women won't be top of their agenda any more than previous female cabinet ministers and probably only a little bit more than their male counterparts. Optics are all well and good but I'd like to see what they do first.

That said the most notable achievement is Rachel Reeves being Chancellor which is a big first and one she acknowledged.

He isn't ticking boxes. Most of the Cabinet have shadowed their roles for a long time and have proved their competence.

HRTQueen · 06/07/2024 20:48

Yes it’s brilliant

and for Rachel Reeves to be the first Chancellor of the Exchequer

apparently the Chancellor’s office only has male urinals 🙄
