To be so happy at so many women in the cabinet

Standupcitizen · 06/07/2024 19:16

Anyone else absolutely thrilled to see women represented equally in the cabinet for the first time ever?

22 appointments. 11 women, 11 men. It seems completely deliberate. Previously the highest % of females in the cabinet was something like 38%. First female chancellor in history as well.

I feel elated that for the first time in my life, we have equality of the sexes in government.

Whatever you think of starmer, the labour party or of the women in question, this is absolutely huge to me, i feel ridiculously emotional about it. I think as a woman who has been dismissed, talked over, belittled, discriminated against and overlooked for promotion in favour of men in the workplace - if the government can do it, then other companies have no excuse.

I’d just like it if people would be appointed because they are the best person for the job. Not because they are a particular ethnic group, or a particular sex, or have particular characteristic - which, is sadly why most of these people were appointed.

his skin colour is irrelevant to his intelligence/ ability, but probably guaranteed his appointment.

wow. I hope people don’t think that about my minority status ffs. Like we don’t already have enough bigotry to contend with.

It's hugely insulting to David Lammy to imply that he got his role because he's black

The best person should get the job. I couldn't give a toss if they're male/female/white/black/etc etc.

Same here!!

I could give a toss when that exact sentence has been used to keep women down because a male applicant or employee was preferred due to his sex. You never been in the sort of workplace where certain men get groomed for promotion? The ones who get the opportunities? The ones who go out to play golf and watch the footie with the boss outside of work? Whose promotion over you is justified with "he's the best one for the job" when you know that you have outperformed that man consistently?

I have been there so many times in so many roles. Just saying, now the government have shown the way, companies have no excuse.

He isn't ticking boxes. Most of the Cabinet have shadowed their roles for a long time and have proved their competence.

Exactly. With a commitment to hit the ground running every cabinet minister has to be on top of their brief right from the start.

It is wonderful however the truth will be if they can define a woman without any hint of irony.

This is such a tired divisive comment.

Exactly this.

Harriet Harman is a man?

Wasn't Margaret Beckett leader too?

Fortunately we now have a Prime Minister who has committed to ensuring that their government treats everyone in the country with respect.

Yes it’s brilliant

and for Rachel Reeves to be the first Chancellor of the Exchequer

apparently the Chancellor’s office only has male urinals 🙄

What?? What happens if they need to do a poo?

She is definitely a man.

That’ll be news to her. 😂

That remains to be seen. He may have 50% women in his Cabinet but I want to see him 100% behind female human beings aka those of us without a penis.

Lot's of women have held cabinet positions in recent years so I don't think it's that remarkable.

It's easy to think making the numbers match exactly is representing women but all these women are politicians first and representing women won't be top of their agenda any more than previous female cabinet ministers and probably only a little bit more than their male counterparts. Optics are all well and good but I'd like to see what they do first.

That said the most notable achievement is Rachel Reeves being Chancellor which is a big first and one she acknowledged.

Yes lots of women have held cabinet positions, but no more than 38% at any one time. THAT is what is significant. Women now have an equal seat at the most important table in the country. They might not say what you want them to say, but they are there, taking up positions in a historically male dominated space, women will be influencing government in a way, and in numbers, they haven't been able to before.

This is significant.

I want to see him run the country competently.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 06/07/2024 20:57

I'm very happy with the sex balance.

I still believe Labour has a problem with women, especially when you consider that not once have they voted in a female leader, whilst the Tories have given us 3 female PMs.

MattDamon · 06/07/2024 20:54

I don’t know I guess they use other toilets 🤷🏻‍♀️

i think it was Matt Chorley who mentioned this on How To Win An Election podcast

luckylavender · 06/07/2024 20:58

@Niegenug - What about Mahmood & Nandy, don't they count?

HowIrresponsible · 06/07/2024 20:59

Whatever you think of starmer, the labour party or of the women in question, this is absolutely huge to me, i feel ridiculously emotional about it.

And yet there has never been a female party leader for Labour. The Conservatives have had 3 female prime ministers the first one being in 1979.

45 years later labour haven't yet managed a female party leader.

But you feel ridiculously emotional about this? Right ok....

Yes, it's so tiring when women object to the raging misogyny of the Labour party. They said similar when women were fighting for the vote. Learn your place, cervix-havers.

luckylavender · 06/07/2024 20:59

Chickenuggetsticks · 06/07/2024 20:45

Depends on the woman really. A lot of them struggle with understanding what a woman is and why she may need sex based rights. I’m really glad that Duffield retained her seat though.

Why? I really don't understand why she's still in the Labour Party.

HowIrresponsible · 06/07/2024 21:00

Oh and none of these labour women know what a woman is. They think women can have penises

luckylavender · 06/07/2024 21:00

HRTQueen · 06/07/2024 20:48

That isn't what the many articles have said. There is a urinal.

BIossomtoes · 06/07/2024 21:00

The Conservatives have had 3 female prime ministers the first one being in 1979

And they were all fuck ups. We’re still living with the damage two of them did.
