To be so happy at so many women in the cabinet

Standupcitizen · 06/07/2024 19:16

Anyone else absolutely thrilled to see women represented equally in the cabinet for the first time ever?

22 appointments. 11 women, 11 men. It seems completely deliberate. Previously the highest % of females in the cabinet was something like 38%. First female chancellor in history as well.

I feel elated that for the first time in my life, we have equality of the sexes in government.

Whatever you think of starmer, the labour party or of the women in question, this is absolutely huge to me, i feel ridiculously emotional about it. I think as a woman who has been dismissed, talked over, belittled, discriminated against and overlooked for promotion in favour of men in the workplace - if the government can do it, then other companies have no excuse.

It is pleasing to see, but I can't help noticing that we have had three female Prime Ministers and I don't remember any of them doing anything specifically for women. Maybe Labour women will be less disappointing.

And yet there has never been a female party leader for Labour. The Conservatives have had 3 female prime ministers the first one being in 1979.

45 years later labour haven't yet managed a female party leader.

But you feel ridiculously emotional about this? Right ok....

Yeah i do, for reasons that I've expressed.

And they were all fuck ups. We’re still living with the damage two of them did.

Most of the men have been, too. David 'Brexit' Cameron comes to mind.

Churchview · 06/07/2024 21:01

Lammy is a terrible choice for one of the top offices of state - his skin colour is irrelevant to his intelligence/ ability, but probably guaranteed his appointment.

David Lamy has two degrees (he was the first black Briton at Harvard Law School), has worked in the law in both the UK and USA and has been in politics for over a quarter of a century both in power and in opposition.

Who else would be more qualified for his role?
Starmer has made some amazing appointments in his determination to achieve the aims he's set out for the country.
Why would anyone think he'd appoint someone incompetent just 'for optics'? The suggestion's ludicrous.

Exactly. Thatcher never had a single woman in Cabinet in eleven years.

Way to miss the point.

@MrsCobbit - of course the new government know what a woman is.

At the risk of repeating myself. Is Harriet Harman a man?

I did love the way she schooled JRM at about 3am on Friday when he was going on about how the committee that found Johnson to be guilty of lying was a stitch up - a committee that he voted to set up, and whose findings he did not vote against.

Tell me how great Tony Blair was with his illegal wars.

Is that the best you can do 😄

But it’s not representative. Almost exclusively white and able bodied.

Are there other MPs suitable to the jobs that Starmer overlooked?

I am not familiar with the current MPs, especially the newly elected.

readingmakesmehappy · 06/07/2024 21:06

The Conservatives have had three women leaders. Labour remains about 50 years behind there.

Standupcitizen · 06/07/2024 21:07

Niegenug · 06/07/2024 20:43

So, apart from David Lammy, Keir Starmer looked around at all his MPs and couldn't find another talented person of colour to join the Cabinet? Is only one 'token' person of colour allowed?

I was for many years the only black woman in my workplace in a government department. I thought those days were left behind. What does the sight of the current cabinet do for aspiring young people of colour?

The Conservative party was awful, but surprisingly when it came to diversity and equality they had 2 women prime Ministers (Liz Truss doesn't count) and had a much more ethnically diverse cabinet.

In this area the Labour leadership has a very, very long way to go.

I guess you missed the news of the appointment of Shabana Mahmood?

It's a cabinet for government, not a Netflix show.

This is such a tired divisive comment.

Is it?

Lisa Nandy specifically said she wanted convicted male rapists to be put in women's prisons and called women who objected bigots. She's never walked this back, apologised and when challenged by JK Rowling she doubled down.

To me this is egregious on a similar level to appalling comments made by Rees Mogg about the victims of Grenfell. Superficial and glib and to most sane people is morally repugnant.

I'm not breaking out the champagne just because her being rewarded with a cabinet position is feel good photo op for equality.

HRTQueen · 06/07/2024 21:10

I certainly am not a fan of Margate Thatcher but few can deny her dedication and competence as a PM to get through parliament her vision and she was an excellent party leader many in her party didn’t like her

just ask Starmer, Blair and Brown all huge admirers of Thatcher’s style and focus just not (all) her policies

blackcherryconserve · 06/07/2024 20:56

That remains to be seen. He may have 50% women in his Cabinet but I want to see him 100% behind female human beings aka those of us without a penis.

Well it is what the Prime Minister has publicly committed to. I thin.k he has made a good start on this. For example he managed to give a whole press conference without calling anyone illegal.

Actually Theresa May has done a lot for women during her political career.

I shouldn't worry about it too much since I understand Nandy isn't in the Cabinet.

The best person should get the job. I couldn't give a toss if they're male/female/white/black/etc etc.

Yes we know that but when 51% of the human race are female then there was something wrong in the past when consistently they were underrepresented at the highest levels of government.

Switcher · 06/07/2024 21:15

Yes that's nice, bit isn't it funny that only the Tories have ever elected a female prime minister? Three, in fact. Perhaps you are in fact happy about women you agree with being promoted.

MotherFeministWoman · 06/07/2024 21:16

It's also very likely that Thangam Debbonaire would have been in the cabinet if she'd kept her seat.

Rainbowsponge · 06/07/2024 20:00

Not really, it’s a very very very white cabinet.

Most of the country is white though?! So of course there will be a majority.
